Book Coal Waste Impoundments

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2002-02-07
  • ISBN : 9780309082518
  • Pages : 64 pages

Download or read book Coal Waste Impoundments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-02-07 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 11, 2000, a breakthrough of Martin County Coal Corporation's coal waste impoundment released 250 million gallons of slurry in near Inez, Kentucky. The 72-acre surface impoundment for coal processing waste materials broke through into a nearby underground coal mine. Although the spill caused no loss of human life, environmental damage was significant, and local water supplies were disrupted. This incident prompted Congress to request the National Research Council to examine ways to reduce the potential for similar accidents in the future. This book covers the engineering practices and standards for coal waste impoundments and ways to evaluate, improve, and monitor them; the accuracy of mine maps and ways to improve surveying and mapping of mines; and alternative technologies for coal slurry disposal and utilization. The book contains advice for multiple audiences, including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Office of Surface Mining, and other federal agencies; state and local policymakers and regulators; the coal industry and its consultants; and scientists and engineers.

Book Coal

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2007-11-21
  • ISBN : 0309134137
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Coal written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-11-21 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal will continue to provide a major portion of energy requirements in the United States for at least the next several decades. It is imperative that accurate information describing the amount, location, and quality of the coal resources and reserves be available to fulfill energy needs. It is also important that the United States extract its coal resources efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally responsible manner. A renewed focus on federal support for coal-related research, coordinated across agencies and with the active participation of the states and industrial sector, is a critical element for each of these requirements. Coal focuses on the research and development needs and priorities in the areas of coal resource and reserve assessments, coal mining and processing, transportation of coal and coal products, and coal utilization.

Book Managing Coal Combustion Residues in Mines

Download or read book Managing Coal Combustion Residues in Mines written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-08-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burning coal in electric utility plants produces, in addition to power, residues that contain constituents which may be harmful to the environment. The management of large volumes of coal combustion residues (CCRs) is a challenge for utilities, because they must either place the CCRs in landfills, surface impoundments, or mines, or find alternative uses for the material. This study focuses on the placement of CCRs in active and abandoned coal mines. The committee believes that placement of CCRs in mines as part of the reclamation process may be a viable option for the disposal of this material as long as the placement is properly planned and carried out in a manner that avoids significant adverse environmental and health impacts. This report discusses a variety of steps that are involved in planning and managing the use of CCRs as minefills, including an integrated process of CCR characterization and site characterization, management and engineering design of placement activities, and design and implementation of monitoring to reduce the risk of contamination moving from the mine site to the ambient environment. Enforceable federal standards are needed for the disposal of CCRs in minefills to ensure that states have adequate, explicit authority and that they implement minimum safeguards.

Book Mine refuse impoundments in the United States

Download or read book Mine refuse impoundments in the United States written by Donald P. Schlick and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing mining and processing techniques, utilization of lower grades of ore, and increased demand for fuels and miners are resulting in the rapid construction of many major mine, mill, and plant refuse embankments throughout the United States. These factors contribute to the need for greater engineering consideration of refuse structures, especially those impounding water, from their initiation through their abandonment.
