Book Characteristics of the Early Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Characteristics of the Early Church Classic Reprint written by John J. Burke and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Characteristics of the Early Church Certain non-Catholics are just now making strong claims to Apostolic succession. On this account many are anxious to study the teachings and practices of the early church. Those unable to consult the writings of the Fathers in the original, or such works as Waterworth's Faith of Catholics and reliable church histories will, perhaps, be interested in this brief study of early Christian life. It will, it is hoped, give those not having leisure to consult more bulky volumes, a fair idea of the propagation, organization, writers, teachings, trials and triumphs of the early church. The primary object, however, of the following pages is to show as briefly and clearly as possible that the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church of to-day are identical with those of the Early Church. Book excerpt: St. Alphonsus writes: “a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery.” Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: “There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals!' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters, films, in a world of immodesty!” We at St. Pius X Press are calling for a crusade of good books. Book Seven Characteristics of the Early Church

Download or read book Seven Characteristics of the Early Church written by Wes McGarry and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no lie to say that the church has changed. In fact, it would be impossible to chart and demonstrate all of the various changes that have transpired over the history of the church. While not all change is bad, it is refreshing to see how simple yet efficient the early church operated. The goal of this book is to give a small glimpse into the life of the early church by examining seven characteristics that described who they were and what they did.

Book Vital Forces of the Early Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Vital Forces of the Early Church Classic Reprint written by Harry Angus Alexander Kennedy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vital Forces of the Early Church It was inevitable that in the late traditions embodied in Acts the power should be associated with miracles and marvels. But any penetrating reader can discern that what really counted in the primitive community was the abnormal endowment for Spiritual situations. So that it is not going beyond the evidence to say that the early Christians soon began to feel their call to victory. From their intimate knowledge of Jesus they believed that this was the Divine purpose. Hence they never hesitated to become fellow-workers with God. The outcome of this equipment in their daily thought and feeling was enthusiasm. So much is plain from the opening chapters of Acts, corroborated by many passages in the Epistles. It is unfortunate that attention has been turned aside from the more general features of the community to such more or less accidental details as the sale of their goods by individuals and the contribution of the proceeds to a common fund. The important feature in the famous story of Ananias and Sapphira is not the terrible penalty represented as falling upon them suddenly, but the high standard of Christian morality which the story presupposes. Book Destroyer of the Gods

Download or read book Destroyer of the Gods written by Larry W. Hurtado and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Silly," "stupid," "irrational," "simple." "Wicked," "hateful," "obstinate," "anti-social." "Extravagant," "perverse." The Roman world rendered harsh judgments upon early Christianity--including branding Christianity "new." Novelty was no Roman religious virtue. Nevertheless, as Larry W. Hurtado shows in Destroyer of the gods, Christianity thrived despite its new and distinctive features and opposition to them. Unlike nearly all other religious groups, Christianity utterly rejected the traditional gods of the Roman world. Christianity also offered a new and different kind of religious identity, one not based on ethnicity. Christianity was distinctively a "bookish" religion, with the production, copying, distribution, and reading of texts as central to its faith, even preferring a distinctive book-form, the codex. Christianity insisted that its adherents behave differently: unlike the simple ritual observances characteristic of the pagan religious environment, embracing Christian faith meant a behavioral transformation, with particular and novel ethical demands for men. Unquestionably, to the Roman world, Christianity was both new and different, and, to a good many, it threatened social and religious conventions of the day. In the rejection of the gods and in the centrality of texts, early Christianity obviously reflected commitments inherited from its Jewish origins. But these particular features were no longer identified with Jewish ethnicity and early Christianity quickly became aggressively trans-ethnic--a novel kind of religious movement. Its ethical teaching, too, bore some resemblance to the philosophers of the day, yet in contrast with these great teachers and their small circles of dedicated students, early Christianity laid its hard demands upon all adherents from the moment of conversion, producing a novel social project. Christianity's novelty was no badge of honor. Called atheists and suspected of political subversion, Christians earned Roman disdain and suspicion in equal amounts. Yet, as Destroyer of the gods demonstrates, in an irony of history the very features of early Christianity that rendered it distinctive and objectionable in Roman eyes have now become so commonplace in Western culture as to go unnoticed. Christianity helped destroy one world and create another.

Download or read book The Story of the Acts of the Apostles written by Denis Lynch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Acts of the Apostles: A Narrative of the Development of the Early Church The Acts of the Apostles, the fifth of the canonical books of the New Testament, is the inestimable record of an eye-witness of remarkable literary skill, and of singular accuracy and reliability. The continuation of the Gospel story, it is the chief and fullest account of the first thirty years of Christianity after the Descent of the Holy Ghost. The link between the Gospel and the Epistles, it illustrates and enshrines the latter, and is in many instances luminously illustrated by them. Often most detailed, and at times most rapidly abridged, it is a rich and graphic narrative of the propagation of the Christian faith throughout a great portion of the Roman Empire up to the closing years of the great Apostle of the Gentiles. Book Biography of the Early Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Biography of the Early Church Classic Reprint written by Robert Wilson Evans and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biography of the Early Church The following pages supply the remainder of the list of prominent persons in ecclesiastical history down to the time of the rise of the Arian controversy, and thus complete the plan proposed in the former volume. The Reader will perceive that not only the history is given in much fuller detail than in the preceding case, which is owing to the much more ample stock of materials; but that also the opinions maintained by the characters are explained with more minuteness. This is partly owing to the same reason, partly also because the arrival at times of controversy within the Church gives them a greater importance, and partly also because the Author, unhappily, can no longer refer his Reader to the faithful guidance of the works of the Bishop of Lincoln. Download or read book An Introduction to Early Church History written by R. Martin Pope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Early Church History: Being a Survey of the Relations of Christianity and Paganism in the Early Roman Empire The following sketch is intended as an introduction to the study of Christianity in its earlier stages of progress up to the accession of Constantine. It makes no preten sion to survey in detail either the history of the Empire or the history of the Church within that period, but rather endeavours by means of a series of impressions to meet the needs of students and others who desire to possess a compact statement of the main features of a development which culminated in the acceptance of Christianity as an imperial religion and, incidentally, transformed its primitive organisation into the ordered and stable system of Catholicism. The writer hopes that such an outline will elucidate the chief factors of a fasci nating historical process, suggesting lines upon which a fuller and closer study may proceed, and indicating the authorities, patristic and Otherwise, for a wider enquiry. It is obvious that some important features can only be incidentally mentioned, as, for example, the tendencies of Christian thought and the growth of dogma with details of heresy and ecclesiastical controversy. Atten tion has rather been concentrated on what perhaps is more generally desired, a survey of the movement in its contact with the empire, its influence, its self-defence and the public verdict.
