Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Freud's earliest psychoanalytic theorization around the beginning of the twentieth century, the concept of the unconscious has exerted an enormous influence upon psychoanalysis and psychology, and literary, critical and social theory. Yet, prior to Freud, the concept of the unconscious already possessed a complex genealogy in nineteenth-century German philosophy and literature, beginning with the aftermath of Kant's critical philosophy and the origins of German idealism, and extending into the discourses of romanticism and beyond. Despite the many key thinkers who contributed to the Germanic discourses on the unconscious, the English-speaking world remains comparatively unaware of this heritage and its influence upon the origins of psychoanalysis. Bringing together a collection of experts in the fields of German Studies, Continental Philosophy, the History and Philosophy of Science, and the History of Psychoanalysis, this volume examines the various theorizations, representations, and transformations undergone by the concept of the unconscious in nineteenth-century German thought.

Book More Than Meets the Eye

Download or read book More Than Meets the Eye written by Herbert Rowland and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans and other English speakers have long associated the name of Hans Christian Andersen exclusively with fairy tales for children. Danes and other Scandinavians, however, have preserved an awareness that the fairy tales are but part of an extensive and respectable lifework that embraces several other literary forms. Moreover, they have never lost sight of the fact that the fairy tales themselves address adults no less than children. Significantly, many of Andersen's coevals in the U.S. knew of his broader literary activity and the sophistication of his fairy tales. Major authors and critics commented on his various works in leading magazines and books, establishing a noteworthy corpus of criticism. One of them, Horace E. Scudder, wrote a seminal essay that surpassed virtually all contemporary writing on him in any language. The basic purpose of this study, the first of its kind, is to trace the course of American Andersen criticism over the second half of the nineteenth century and to view it in several American contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rufus Hallmark's book explores Robert Schumann's beloved yet controversial song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben and the poems of Adelbert von Chamisso on which it is based, setting them in the context of the challenges and social expectations faced by women in early nineteenth-century Germany. Hallmark provides the most extensive English-language study of Chamisso, a poet little known today outside Germany, including a biographical sketch and excerpts from his other poetry. He examines a range of poems about women, by Chamisso and others, and discusses the reception of the poetic and musical cycles, including illustrated editions, contemporary reviews, and other musical settings. Based on new studies of Schumann's manuscript sources and on comparative analyses of his songs and settings by Carl Loewe, Heinrich Marschner, Franz Lachner and others, Hallmark provides fresh musical and interpretive insights into each song.

Book Hindeutung Auf Das H here

Download or read book Hindeutung Auf Das H here written by Judith Purver and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1989 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, the first full-length investigation in English of the structure of Eichendorff's novels, begins by examining Romantic literary theory and its significance for Eichendorff's conception of the «Roman». His two novels, Ahnung und Gegenwart and Dichter und ihre Gesellen, are then analysed in the context of both the theory and practice of the Romantic novel, and of Eichendorff's other works. His conception of the «Roman» is shown to correspond closely to Romantic theory and to find expression in his novels, which reflect in their structure both the seeming confusion of life and its underlying, God-given order, and thereby point beyond themselves to a transcendent significance.
