Book Parent and Teacher Perceptions of Characteristics of the Effective Elementary School Principal

Download or read book Parent and Teacher Perceptions of Characteristics of the Effective Elementary School Principal written by William M. Bray and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the elementary principal is more challenging and complex than ever before. Principals are not only expected to be strong leaders, but they are expected to practice shared leadership with their various constituent groups. The ever-changing responsibilities of the position have contributed to disparate views on the role of the principal. Different constituent groups vary in their perceptions of an effective principal. The better a principal understands the perceptions and expectations of the various constituent groups he or she serves, the more likely it is that a principal can fulfill the expectations and be perceived as effective. This study identified the perceptions of parents and teachers with regard to the characteristics of an effective elementary school principal. An inventory was used as the primary source of quantitative data for the study. Qualitative data was gathered through participant responses to a series of open-ended questions relating to five leadership themes interviewed within the inventory. Twenty-nine parents and forty teachers from three separate primary schools (grades kindergarten through three) within one school district were surveyed.

Book Qualities of Effective Elementary Principals

Download or read book Qualities of Effective Elementary Principals written by Kimberly Garvey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive case study was to understand what elementary principals, elementary teachers, and parents of elementary school students perceive as effective leadership skills in the areas of instructional leadership and school culture for an elementary principal. Five elementary principals, 75 elementary school teachers, and 33 parents of elementary students from two school districts in south central Pennsylvania participated in the study. Each participant responded to a survey created by the researcher. In addition, all five principals and eleven teachers participated in face to face interviews. For the parents, 18 responded to open ended focus group questions. In the area of instructional leadership principals favored qualities that mirrored their daily activities such as : (a) setting instructional goals, (b) using assessment results to show progress, and (c) observing teachers and staff to improve instructional methodology, while teachers and parents considered valuing teaching and learning and motivation of staff as very important qualities of an effective elementary principal. Principals, teachers, and parents all highly valued many school culture qualities such as: (a) developing positive relationships, (b) being trustworthy, (c) respecting others, and (d) supporting others.

Book Defining Leadership Qualities of Effective Principals of High English language Schools

Download or read book Defining Leadership Qualities of Effective Principals of High English language Schools written by Samuel D. Sarabia and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 13, 2010 the Obama Administration released A Blueprint for Reform: The Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The Blueprint focused on four areas, including (1) Improving teacher and principal effectiveness (DOE, 2010, p. 3). The goal was for districts to improve the effectiveness of leaders and to ensure “that the students in high-need schools are being led by effective leaders” (DOE, p. 14). Districts were required to develop teacher and principal evaluation systems (DOE, p. 15). The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore and describe the characteristics, background, and leadership qualities of five elementary school principals identified as effective principals using achievement data from the district’s Education Value-Added Assessment System (EVASS). The sample schools were selected using the following criteria: high proportion of students living in poverty as measured through National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Free and Reduced Cost Meal (FARM) qualifications; high proportion of Latino students; high proportion of students identified as English Language Learners (ELL); and high levels of student achievement as measured through the selected district’s value-added achievement data. A purposive sample of five principals was selected for their willingness to participate. This study was grounded in the practice and the literature that principals make a difference (Barth, 1986; Gezi, 1990; Hallinger & Heck, 1996; Leithwood & Jantzi, 2005; Leithwood & Jantzi, 1999; Marzano, Waters & McNulty, 2005; Mortimore,1993; Reitzug & Patterson, 1998; Robinson, Lloyd & Rowe, 2008; Scheurich, 1998; Silins, Mulford & Zarins, 2002; Spillane, Diamond, Burch, Hallett, Jita & Zolmmers, 2002; Townsend, 1994; and Waters, Marzano & McNulty, 2003). The literature on principal practices and measurement of their practices was also reviewed (Camburn & Han, 2005; Camburn & Barnes, 2004; Grissom & Loeb, 2010; Halverson, Prichett, Grigg & Thomas, 2005; Horng, Kalogrides, & Loeb 2009; Porter, Murphy, Goldring, Elliott & Polikoff, 2008; Rowan, Camburn, & Correnti, 2004; Wahlstrom, Louis, Leithwood, & Anderson, 2010; Waters, Marzano & McNulty, 2003). This quantitative study used survey research methods to gather data for the purposive sample of highly effective principals (Fowler, 2013; McNamara, 1994; Scheaffer, Mendenhall, & Ott, 1990). While this study used some open-ended questions in the survey, the goal was to gather statistical descriptions by asking questions of a sample of five effective principals (Fowler, 2013). The aim of using survey research methodology was to tap the subjective feelings of a sample of principals (Fowler, 2013). While survey research provides a first-effort opportunity to learn about effective principals, the data gathered in this study may be used to develop a full-scale probability sample survey. Findings in this study were quantified using principal characteristics, backgrounds, and leadership qualities. In identifying effective principals in English-Language-Learning schools it was reported for all principals: 100 percent had exclusively elementary school experience as both classroom teachers and administrators; 100 percent served as bilingual teachers with state certifications in elementary self-contained, bilingual and mid-management;100 percent had undergraduate degrees in education; and, 80 percent of the principals had teaching experiences in both lower grades and upper grades within the elementary school setting. While the principals had an average of 2.8 years of experience as principals in the sample schools, they had an average of eight years of total principal experience. Responses from the McREL based survey suggest that there is a definite disconnect between what principals’ score themselves on perceived mindsets (what they actually think they are doing or believe should be done) and their perceived actual behavior as effective principals.

Book Northern California Elementary School Principals Perceptions of Teacher Equity Characteristics

Download or read book Northern California Elementary School Principals Perceptions of Teacher Equity Characteristics written by Victor Serrato and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand elementary school principals’ perceptions about what teachers need to know and be able to do in the classroom in order to teach all students equitably. In addition, this study sought to understand what attitudes and belief systems are needed by teachers in order for them to effectively meet the needs of all students. More specifically the researcher sought to understand whether teachers have an awareness of the culturally relevant needs specifically for disadvantaged students. For the purpose of this study, the researcher identified disadvantaged students as students of color and students in poverty. A qualitative analysis using semi-structured interviews was conducted with the help of 10 elementary school principals located in 3 northern California school districts. The researcher used a social justice and equity lens to guide the research process. The principals shared their understanding of equitable educational practices. They also reported on the challenges that they face to keep up with state and district mandates. Finally, implications and recommendations were made regarding research, practice and educational policy.
