Book Selections From Carlyle Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Carlyle The present volume, it is believed, includes within its narrow limits material adequate for the elementary study of Carlyle in his earliest and most fruitful period. The notes are planned in the main to give aid rather than information or Opinion. By the frequent quotation of supplementary or illustrative passages wherever it was practicable, the plan has been to let the author annotate himself. Occasionally it has seemed natural to call atten tion to some characteristic mode of thought or of expres sion, but in neither case has a set analysis been attempted. The editor's suggestions to the teacher who may use this book are three: First, that some sort of insight into the character of the man Carlyle is essential, not only as a commentary upon, but as an introduction to, the study of his work. Second, that a good deal of additional matter should be read aloud to the class, with a view to familiarizing them with peculiarities of manner which are obstacles only to the unaccustomed ear. And third, that all systematic discussion of style be reserved until the student has had a chance to form an Opinion of his own, and is ready to take a part in the discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Thomas Carlyle "If," says Carlyle, "an individual is of sufficient consequence to have his life recorded for public remembrance, we have always been of opinion that the public ought to be made acquainted with all the inward springs and relations of his character." Heartily concurring in this opinion, I have ventured to make the study of this great man's life my aim for months past - to try and account for the gloom and despondency which were so marked in his character, and which, on the surface of things, seem almost unaccountable. In the following pages I have endeavoured to give to my readers incidents in his life, traits in his character, that made him so little of an optimist in expression, and yet the inward conviction that at heart he did not really believe the universe to be demoniacal, but God-like, and man the temple of the Most High. The following pages, I trust, will prove that he was no selfish, cantankerous, domestic tyrant, or teacher of virtues he failed himself to put in practice; that in him there was nothing false or insincere; that he was throughout his long, chequered existence actuated by noble and heroic motives, carrying heavy burdens enough to crush a less dauntless spirit. Book Life of Thomas Carlyle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life of Thomas Carlyle Classic Reprint written by Richard Garnett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Thomas Carlyle The duty of acknowledging assistance derived from literary sources is very generally spared to the authors of this series by the copious bibliographies which constitute one of its distinctive features. By these the courteous reader may conjecture what the writer must have read, and the critical reader may discover what he has omitted to read. Some special services, nevertheless, claim special expressions of gratitude. While in no respect responsible for any of the author's statements or opinions not directly quoted from himself, Professor Masson has laid him under the deepest obligation for help and counsel. To Mr. Alexander Ireland, another old and faithful friend of Carlyle's, the writer is indebted for his perusal of the proof-sheets, and for the loan of a copy of the "Reminiscences," in which the innumerable errors of the first edition, only within these last few days superseded by Professor Norton's, were carefully corrected by Mr. Ireland's own hand. Mr. Leslie Stephen's article in the "Dictionary of National Biography" has proved most serviceable as a luminous digest of the subject. Lastly, the author's thanks are due to the kind friend who has relieved the biographer of a Prophet of the secular and sublunary task of compiling an index. Book Thomas Carlyle

Download or read book Thomas Carlyle written by James Anthony Froude and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle: A History of the First Forty Years of His Life, 1795-1835 Mr. Carlyle expressed a desire in his will that of him no biography should be written. I find the same reluctance in his Journal. No one, he said, was likely to understand a history, the secret of which was unknown to his closest friends. He hoped that his wishes would be respected. Partly to take the place of a biography of himself, and part ly for other reasons, he collected the letters of his wife-letters which covered the whole period of his life in London to the date of her death, when his own active work was finished. He prepared them for publication, adding notes and introductory explanations, as the last sacred duty which remained to him in the world. He intended it as a monument to a character of extreme beauty; while it would tell the public as much about himself as it could reasonably expect to learn. These letters he placed in my hands eleven years ago, with materials for an Introduction which he was himself unable to complete. He could do no more with it, he said. He could not make up his mind to direct positively the publication even of the letters themselves. He wished them to be published, but he left the decision to myself; and when I was reluctant to undertake the sole responsibility, he said that, if I was in doubt when the time came, I might consult his brother John and his friend Mr. Forster. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Note Books of Thomas Carlyle: From 23d March, 1822, to 16th May, 1832 To the student of the growth of Carlyle's intellectual powers and the development of his opinions, these books afford material of interest hardly inferior to that contained in his Reminiscence: and in his [enters - letters remarkable beyond most others for the full ness of their exhibition of the character of their writer, for their sincerity and directness, and for the union in them of ease and rapid ity of composition with excellence of expres sion. The Notebooks display in like manner, if in less degree, the mastery which Carlyle possessed over his own faculties. He com plains often of the difficulty he experienced in writing, but his letters and his journal alike re veal the mental discipline which enabled him to give off-hand an adequate and clear expres sion to his thought. There is seldom an erasure or defective phrase in his most rapid and in stant writing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Masters of Literature Carlyle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Masters of Literature Carlyle Classic Reprint written by A. W. Evans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of Literature, Carlyle For more than twenty-five years of his lifetime Carlyle occupied a place among his contemporaries which is very nearly unique in the history of English men of letters. Men of all schools and of all parties listened for the oracles delivered at Chelsea with veneration, enthusiasm, doubt, dissent, or amusement, but always with close attention. His denunciations of what displeased him in life or in letters were passed about from mouth to mouth and laughed at or applauded, while his approval of a scheme or of a movement was looked upon by those (and they were not many) who received it as a testimonial of the highest worth. He was, in short, almost an English institution. And this ascendancy was quite as much a tribute to his character as an acknowledgment of his genius. Men felt that he had reached his convictions by the road of personal experience as well as of ardent intellectual toil, that he had taught himself before he took it upon himself to teach others, and that whatever value might be attributed to the message he delivered, there could be no shadow of doubt regarding its sincerity. Like Dr. Johnson, with whom, in spite of many points of dissimilarity, Carlyle had a great deal in common, his position was due to what he was as much as to what he had written. Johnson, an Englishman of Englishmen, a Tory and a Royalist, content to accept the teaching of the Church of England with scarcely a movement of doubt, was, as Carlyle himself discerned, gifted by nature for "the noblest of earthly tasks, that of Priesthood and guidance of mankind." Book Thomas Carlyle

Download or read book Thomas Carlyle written by J. C. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle: A Study ON the fifth day of February, 1881, passed on this great Cromwellian prince of philosophy and letters. He leaves behind him a legacy of elevated thought and authoritative opinion, valued by his contemporaries generally as the highest expression of rare talent and genius. His intellect, of the highest calibre, was impelled' by the spirit of a fine love of freedom and justice. The restraints of creeds and religious articles had no binding power upon his soaring thought. His soul was launched into the blue azure of free thought. He loved freedom for his own intellectual strength and the realisation of his philosophical ideals. Without it his radiant soul would have sunk, and night would have closed in upon his vision. Like all true seers he had his own peculiar light, which needed certain special conditions for its development. At first it displayed more strength than brilliancy, but afterwards it presented the grandest qualities of intellectual illumination. He was unlike Byron, whose genius came with an overwhelming rush, carrying all before him. His mind developed slowly, but, having assimilated. Book Guide to Carlyle Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Guide to Carlyle Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Augustus Ralli and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Carlyle, Vol. 1 The biographical chapters have been added for the sake of completeness, that the reader may possess, within the compass of a single work, a compendium of all facts worthy of note relating to Carlyle's life and books. They have been compiled from the Reminiscencer, and the Letters published at intervals of years down to August 1914, and from the work of Froude, though the latter has been used as sparingly as possible. Writing for a new generation, largely unacquainted with Froude, I had hoped to make the biography non-controversial. I thought it might be assumed that the battle was over and F roude finally defeated, and that a new start might therefore be made in the treatment of Carlyle's life, as if F roude had never given his theories to the world. If this has proved to be impossible, I at least hope that controversy has been reduced to a minimum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of Carlyle an Experiment in Biographical Explication Ecclefechan is a village remote from central and metropolitan influences, and in pre-railway days, when men and women lived and died whose eyes had never rested beyond the valleys of their nativity, each valley or district in the Borderland tended to produce its characteristic type called into being by the local conditions. Along with Annandale, Eccle fechan took its share in the making of the history of Scotland and the development of the national character, but the one event of world-wide importance of which we have record in all its long history occurred there late in the eighteenth century, when the old conditions which had subsisted for so many centuries were passing away for ever. Like - all really great events, it came unheralded and unannounced. Like many incidents of vast importance to every one in the ultimate, it occurred among the lower or humbler ranks of men and women, almost but not quite among the humblest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle: Philosophic Thinker, Theologian, Historian, and Poet Thomas Carlyle, Thinker, Poet, Historian, and Prophet, in every sense the most remarkable man of letters of the England of our time, is yet a writer of whom many readers desire some compact and distinct information. The impressions concerning him, and the influence of his writings, are very various, very prejudiced, and for the most part entirely incorrect. His writings are not to be summed up in the space of a brief review; and if this little volume shall serve as a kind of index, pointing modest and not too-well-in-formed readers to the leading characteristics which may be expected in that long row of closely-printed volumes, and thus prove an incentive to their closer and more continuous study, its chief end will be answered.
