Book excerpt: School-based extracurricular activity participation has been linked to positive behavioral and academic outcomes; however, little is known about the participation and outcomes of participation of Hispanic students, a group that is historically at high risk for school failure. As such, extracurricular activity participation characteristics and outcomes of a diverse group of middle school students were examined in this two journal article dissertation. First, participation differences between students based on student racial group membership and student sex were examined. Logistic regression was used to examine participation status differences (yes or no). Analysis of variance was used to examine participation intensity between student groups. Additionally, the effects of participation on outcomes related to adolescent peer groups, belongingness, and school membership were examined. Multiple regression models were utilized for this analysis, and consideration was given to interaction effects that would indicate whether groups of students (i.e. sex and race) benefited differentially from participation. Results indicated that, during the 7th grade, Hispanic students were significantly less likely to participate in sports-related extracurricular activities as compared to their Caucasian peers. However, no group differences in sex or race were found for participation intensity. Furthermore, participation in sports-related extracurricular activities was related to higher feelings of school membership for Hispanic and Black, but not White, students. In addition, participation in sports was related to Black students identifying a higher percentage of their friends as displaying prosocial behavior. Overall, the results suggested that while Hispanic students may have benefited more so than their White peers from participation, they participated at lower levels as a group. This highlights a currently under-tapped potential for intervention.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study is to examine the reasons why Hispanic middle grade students choose not to participate in school-based extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities have been recognized to have a positive influence on the educational success of students. Despite the positive effects, Hispanic students have been shown to participate in extracurricular activities at school less than other groups of students. The lack of participation by students in extracurricular activities is related to student disengagement and ultimately dropping out of school. This study uses three methods of data collection: analysis of documents and artifacts, a scaled survey, and a critical case participant who described the experiences of this minority population. The site of the study is a middle school with the highest percentage of minority students in its district. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the current trends of Hispanic nonparticipation in extracurricular activities while in middle school by identifying cultural predictors which prevent this population of students from participating in extracurricular activities. Further, the results may be used to implement strategies to encourage Hispanic students to become more involved in their school community through extracurricular activity participation.

Book excerpt: A student's race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status are predictors for their engagement in extracurricular activities, with poor and non-dominant students participating at lower rates (Brown & Evans, 2002; Weininger, Lareau, & Conley, 2015). To better understand the underrepresentation of Latino students in the extracurricular activity program at a predominantly White suburban high school, this mixed-methods study examined how Latino students understood the social context of the school, and how their sense of belonging in the school community influenced their (non)participation in extracurricular clubs. The research questions guiding this study are: (1) What are the experiences of Latino students at Smith HS with extracurricular activities? (2) To what extent do Latino students participate in school-sponsored extracurricular activities, and what are the school and non-school factors affecting their participation in extracurricular activities? (3) How does student participation in extracurricular activities relate to their sense of belonging in the school (or lack thereof)? The study identifies institutional factors as well as social factors that shape student involvement in school-sponsored extracurricular activities, and which also perpetuate the structures that create and reinforce social stratification. The data for this study includes: a questionnaire administered to one grade level (n=351); fourteen individual in-depth interviews and six focus group interviews of Latino students; six months of field observations of school club meetings, and school events; and an archival document review. Survey results confirmed that Latino students participated in extracurriculars at statistically significant lower rates than their peers, and interview data revealed that they reported experiencing a lower sense of belonging than their peers, which they attributed to a school climate where Latino students felt excluded and ignored. Barriers to participation were embedded in a social hierarchy that disadvantaged Latino students, in addition to the institutionalized structure of extracurricular activities itself, which emphasized academic and competitive clubs that do not meet the needs and interests of Latino students, thus, discouraging their participation.

Book excerpt: Students of diverse populations have the highest risk of becoming disengaged from school and dropping out. This study investigated the relationship between extra-curricular activity participation and psychological school engagement among a group of fifty-three diverse middle school students. The sample studied mostly lived in the United States their entire lives, participated in extra-curricular activities, and reported being affectively "engaged" in school. Among the students studied, no correlation between participation in extra-curricular activities was observed. Students of all ethnicities reported similar levels of psychological school engagement. However, a difference was found in Hispanic/Latino students, in that those who had spent less than their entire life in the United States were involved less in extra-curricular activities than other ethnic groups.

Book excerpt: Scholars have found that half the students entering college are unsuccessful in accomplishing their aspirations of earning a college degree (Swail, Redd, & Perna, 2003). Student retention and persistence, especially among underrepresented students, continues to be a challenge for institutions of higher education. For instance, the Latino population is rapidly growing in the U.S., and more Latino students are enrolling in institutions of higher education, but their educational attainment continues to lag. The literature demonstrates that student success has a variety of definitions and that student engagement can contribute to student success. Educational researchers have studied the effects of student engagement in colleges across the nation. Astin (1999) claimed the greater a student's involvement is, the greater their learning and development will be. Since more Latino students are seeking a post-secondary education, researchers have explored the outcomes of their engagement. A multitude of factors contribute to the persistence of students in higher education. Involvement in campus activities enhances a student's educational experience. Research shows that student participation in extracurricular activities while in college plays a significant role in academic achievement (Astin, 1999); however, further research needs to examine the impact that student engagement has on the college persistence of Latinos. This study investigated Latino student engagement in campus activities and the impact on student success. The methodology used for this study was both quantitative and qualitative. Undergraduate Latino students participated in an online questionnaire conducted through Qualtrics, an Internet-based survey tool. University administrators and faculty that work closely with this population of students participated in semi-structured interviews. The researcher utilized mixed methods to gain a better understanding of the impact that Latino student engagement has on student success. The data gathered from the 14 undergraduate students, three faculty members, and two university administrators suggest that there are positive outcomes to Latino student engagement. According to the findings, the majority of students that become involved on campus are able to build friendships and develop personal and professional skills and engagement helps them in their pursuit of obtaining a college degree. The findings also indicate that there are factors that may prevent Latino students from participating in campus activities. Based on these findings, a recommendation is that professionals in higher education incorporate a variety of programs to encourage student participation.

The review indicated that the associations between extracurricular activity participation and these outcomes are mostly positive, with some limitations due to unmonitored and unmeasurable variables. Adolescents who participated in ECAs reported higher grades, more positive attitudes toward schools, and higher academic aspirations once demographic characteristics and prior adjustment were controlled. In contrast, results were examined with information related to participation in team sports were linked to positive educational trajectories and to high rates of involvement in risky behaviors. The author suggests application for information from this review as well as future research including discovering new methods for measuring activities and attitudes related toward student's attitude and their school experiences."--leaf 3.

Book excerpt: There has been a growing discussion in the fields of education and psychology about the relationship between social skill proficiency and academic excellence. However, the presence of extracurricular involvement as promoting both academic and social development has not been thoroughly explored. The most recent literature syntheses and meta-analyses on extracurricular activity participation were conducted in the 1980's. An updated review and quantitative look at the participation literature is due. The purpose of this study is to integrate participation studies from the 1990s and give summative information as to the impact of extracurricular activity participation on various educational and psycho-social characteristics. Of the 164 identified studies, 41 were included in these meta-analyses. The current analyses produced 6 different activity categories: general extracurricular activity, sports, work and vocational activities, performing arts, pro-social activities, and community-based activities. The current meta-analyses suggest student outcomes were significantly related to general extracurricular activity and pro-social activity participation. General activities and pro-social activities had the most impact on academic achievement, while performing arts and pro-social activities' participants reported the largest effect on identity and self esteem related outcomes. Sports and related activities (i.e. Cheerleading) were not as strongly linked to academic achievement indicators as anticipated and student workers had more negative outcomes than any other activity participants. In conclusion, the best outcomes for children and adolescents are brought about through well-built, developmentally appropriate structured activities. Moreover, the academic and social profits of extracurricular activities that have been examined in this study can be used to inform program planning and implementation.

It addresses the question: "Among students at risk due to status characteristics, what are the relationships of high school engagement and attainments with post-high school outcomes?" Two sets of outcomes are considered: entry and persistence in postsecondary education, and employment and income as a young adult. The report distinguishes between "status risk factors" such as SES and race/ethnicity and two other sets of risk factors: behavioral risk factors and academic risk factors. Behavioral risk factors are behaviors and attitudes closely related to learning, for example, attendance, paying attention to the teacher, completing coursework, and developing a sense that schooling is important to future life successes. These behaviors and attitudes are referred to as school engagement. "Disengagement" (e.g., not attending class, not completing assignments) can create severe impediments to learning. One method in accomplishing this goal is to provide extracurricular activities. Memphis City Schools, therefore, supports school extracurricular activities on the elementary level that place the highest priority on academic achievement and character development. A developing body of research suggests that there are benefits for students who participate in extracurricular activities. Past research suggests that parents' involvement contributes to children's affective experience of extracurricular participation. In the present study, The Determination of Parental Support of Extracurricular Activities Scale (DPSEA), adopted from the Parental Involvement Activities Scale (PIAS), was designed to solicit the degree of parental support involvement in their child's participation in extracurricular activities. Participants in this study were 355 third to fifth grade students (N =355). Several important results were found in this study: (1) Student perceptions of involvement in extracurricular activities indicated that overall 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade students exhibited positive responses in regards to their perceptions about extracurricular activities; (2) Parental perceptions of involvement in extracurricular activities indicated that overall parents of 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade students significantly supported the participation of their children in extracurricular activities; (3) Specifically, 3 rd and 5 th and 4 th and 5 th grade parents accounted for significant differences between their positive and negative attitude with regards to participation of their children in extracurricular activities; and (4) Although relationships between intermediate students' degree of participation and types of extracurricular activities were found not to be significant, there was a mostly positive correlation between parental support and students' degree, number, and types of participation in extracurricular activities. Relationships between intermediate students' degree, number, and types of participation in extracurricular activities and the perceived degree of parental support for student participation in extracurricular activities were examined Results of the present study suggest that parents play a key role in their children's experience in participating in extracurricular activities.
