Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Spanish Literature The vast progress made in all departments of literary scholarship, and the minuteness with which knowledge is now subdivided, threaten to leave the general reader bewildered at the diversity and bulk of what is presented to him. The exact historian of literature concentrates his attention on so narrow a field that he cannot be expected to appeal to a wide class; those who study what he writes are, or must in some measure grow to be, his fellow-specialists. But the more precisely each little area is surveyed in detail, the more necessary dees it become for us to return at frequent intervals to an inspection of the general scheme of which each topo graphical study is but a fragment magnified. 'it has seemed that of late the minute treatment of a multitude of intellectual phenomena has a little tended to obscure the general movement of literature in each race or country. In a crowd of handbooks, each of high authority in itself, the general trend of influence or thread of evolution may be lost. Book Spanish Literature

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Literature: A Primer IT is now nearly twenty-five years since I first published A History of Spanish Literature. It naturally had the limitations of the time at which it was written but it had the advantage, if advantage it were, of representing a personal knowledge of Campoamor, Valera, Nunez de Arce, Pereda, and especially Menendez y Pelayo. This will explain in part the measure of success which the book Obtained. In other respects the volume in its Spanish version owed some of its vogue to the fact that it was adopted in the Universities of Spain. But a work which was suitable for natives would scarcely meet the needs of foreign beginners. It was accordingly resolved to publish a Primer which should meet some of these needs at the same time that it expressed the views set down here. There are a certain number of points which would not be familiar even to natives, such as the absence of metrical system that characterizes the early Spanish cantares de gesta and the veering to the opposite extreme under Boscan's leadership. The suitability of the present little book for foreigners is, it may be hoped, possibly considerable, if the last twenty years of my life have not been altogether wasted in teaching Spanish in English Universities. It is not sur prising that a Primer of the History of Literature should be in demand in the case Of the language which, after English, is spoken by a larger number of people than any other speech of the West. We cannot pretend that we have discovered half as much as we should like about the arcana of Spanish Literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Spanish Literature Theatre. - Influence Of The Church And The Inquisition. - Mysteries. - Castillejo, Oliva, Juan De Paris, And Others. - Popular Demands For Dramatic Literature. - Lope De Rueda. - His Life, Comedias, Coloquios, Pasos, And Dialogues In Verse. - His Character As Founder Of The Popular Drama In Spain. - Juan De Timoneda. The theatre in Spain, as in most other countries of modern Europe, was early called to contend with formidable difficulties. Dramatic representations there, perhaps more than elsewhere, had been for centuries in the hands of the Church; and the Church was not willing to give them up, especially for such secular and irreligious purposes as we have seen were apparent in the plays of Naharro. The Inquisition, therefore, already arrogating to itself powers not granted by the state, but yielded by a sort of general consent, interfered betimes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Spanish-American Literature It is only the other day that cultured men in the Spanish motherland began to manifest any real interest in the literature of their one-time colonies in the Western World. Hardly at all before Juan Valera, the charming novelist and discerning critic, wrote his gossipy American Letters, (1888-1890) did well trained men and much less, of course, the ordinary reader in the Iberian peninsula realize the ambitious activity of the many writers of the 19th century, scattered throughout the countries lying between the southern bounds of the United States and Tierra del Fuego; and not until Menendez y Pelayo prepared for the Spanish Academy his Anthology of Spanish-American Poets (1893-95) was there any considerable knowledge in Spain of the great output of Spanish verse in the New World from the period of settlement down to our own times. Genial spirit though he was, Valera was unable to avoid a certain display of that condescending tolerance of the European critic for the products of the colonial mind which we in the United States have been so accustomed to find in the attitude of the British critics and essayist toward our own belles lettres. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Half of the Seventeenth Century A word by way of preface is requisite, if only to explain to the reader, who may take up this volume without recalling its place in a series, why there is no chapter on Spain in a history of European literature during the first half of the seventeenth century. The present writer undertook his task on the understanding that the Spanish literature of the epoch was covered by Mr Hannay's chapters in The Later Renaissance. It was explained there that the principle of overlapping, which must be admitted in any attempt to divide European literature into epochs, is specially applicable to the case of Spain; and the six chapters devoted to the literature of Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in that volume preclude the necessity of treatment in this. The same principle has been applied, to a certain extent, in the chapters on Dutch literature, with which this volume opens. Book The Cambridge Companion to Modern Spanish Culture

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Modern Spanish Culture written by David T. Gies and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive account of modern Spanish culture, tracing its dramatic and often unexpected development from its beginnings after the Revolution of 1868 to the present day. Specially-commissioned essays by leading experts provide analyses of the historical and political background of modern Spain, the culture of the major autonomous regions (notably Castile, Catalonia, and the Basque Country), and the country's literature: narrative, poetry, theatre and the essay. Spain's recent development is divided into three main phases: from 1868 to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War; the period of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco; and the post-Franco arrival of democracy. The concept of 'Spanish culture' is investigated, and there are studies of Spanish painting and sculpture, architecture, cinema, dance, music, and the modern media. A chronology and guides to further reading are provided, making the volume an invaluable introduction to the politics, literature and culture of modern Spain.

This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of Ticknor's History of Spanish Literature Especially are the peculiarities of the Spanish temper ament observable in that part of their literature which is inspired by the passion of love. With the Spanish poet, love is a burning and consuming fire, which feeds upon the heart and wastes away the life. A favoring smile lifts him into a heaven of ecstasy, while a frown converts the face of nature into a universal blank. The delicate sentiment which breathes through the sonnets of Petrarch is like the night-breeze that steals the perfume from the orange-gardens of Sorento, but in the poetry of Spain love is a tropical tempest, which makes a desert of the breast in which it rages. And this volcanic passion does not express itself with simplicity and directness, but the lover, in the midst of his alternations of rapture and agony, indulges himself in the most cold and fantastic conceits, and moralizes the perfections of his mistress into a thousand elaborate similes, which seem equally opposed to good taste and genuine passion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the History of the Novela Picaresca in Spain When I wrote this dissertation, I could assume that before sending it to the printer I might rework it. The Board of University Studies of the Johns Hopkins University has requested that my work be printed, in the form in which, eight years ago, it was presented. F. W. Chandler's Romances of roguery. Part I. The picaresque novel in Spain, (1899) appeared almost simultaneously with my study: Picaros y ganapanes (in: Homenaje a Menendez y Pelayo, 1899). The author could not notice my having worked on the same subject, the only earlier printed record thereof being in the yearly report of the Johns Hopkins University. The merit of his book precludes regret - on any one's part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book La Gaviota a Spanish Novel Classic Reprint written by Fernán Caballero and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from La Gaviota a Spanish Novel Gaviota (sea-gull) is the sobriquet which Andalusians give to harsh-tongued, flighty women of unsympathetic mien and manners; and such was applied to the heroine of this tale by a youthful, malicious tormentor - Momo. Fernan Caballero is, indeed, but a pseudonym: the author of this novel, passing under that name, is understood to be a lady, partly of German descent. Her father was Don Juan Nicholas Bohl de Faber, to whose erudition Spain is indebted for a collection of ancient poetry. Cecelia, the daughter of Bohl de Faber, was born at Morges, in Switzerland, in 1797, and subsequently married to a Spanish gentleman. Indeed, since the death of her first husband, she has successively contracted two other marriages, and is now a widow. We have it on the authority of the Edinburgh Review, that the novels of this gifted authoress were "published at the expense of the Queen."
