Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on Animals, Dogs Cats and Horses Philip gilbert hamerton, an art critic of keen insight and wide reputation, whose writings are remarkable for their attractive style, was born in 1834 and died in 1894. The greater portion of his life was spent in France; the rest of it chiefly in one of the wildest and most beautiful parts of Scotland, where he lived as much as possible among his friends, the animals His wife says that he never could be without a dog, and the following words in which he prefaces the book (chapters on Animals, London, 1874) from which these pages are taken, together with the chapters themselves, will show what a warm lover and kind-hearted master animals had in him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Activities: A First Book in Zoölogy The Rook here presented is the outgrowth of fifteen years 0 teaching the subject to large classes in a high school. Its aim is to interest and guide pupils in the study of living animals. Young people are usually ready to be made acquainted with their immediate neighbors in the animal world, and it is hoped that this book may be of assistance to them. In the choice and arrangement of topics the powers and interests of young students have been kept in view rather than the demands of strictly logical description and exposition. Chapter I outlines the animal kingdom in such a manner as to be useful for reference purposes._ Chapter II gives directions for assisting the student in procuring his own specimens for study. Chapter III describes the activities common to all animals. With Chapter IV work on the Arthropoda begins. Animals of this group are selected for the early part of the work because living specimens can be easily collected and observed in the fall, at which time Zoology is begun in most schools. After the study of the Arthropoda, the book follows the natural order, beginning with the simplest animals and ending with the most complex. In some schools it will doubtless be better to begin with Chapter XI, and study the Arthropoda directly after the chapter on The Earthworm This latter order of subjects is advised when the Zoology course begins in the winter or spring. Book Chapters on the Natural History of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chapters on the Natural History of the United States Classic Reprint written by Robert W. Shufeldt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on the Natural History of the United States It will be observed that quite a large number of the illustra tions are reproduced from photographs of living animals of va rions species and kinds. These were all taken by myself from the living subjects, and nearly in every instance of natural size. Too much cannot be said in favor of the constant use of the photographic camera in zoology, and when by its means really first-rate, life-like pictures of any of our living forms are secured in natural attitudes, and with nature's surroundings, they should surely be published, and be made to take the place Of many of the highly incorrect figures Of our animals, still to be found in popular works upon natural history. Taxidermists and artists will then, I am sure, appreciate this feature in my book, for if anything be useful and helpful to them in their work it is good pictures of this class, used, as they safely can be, as models. Book A Natural History of Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Natural History of Animals Classic Reprint written by John Bigland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural History of Animals The study of Nature is the basis of Religion; and in the primitive ages of the world, previous to the epoch of revelation, mankind had no other guide to direct them to a knowledge of the existence and attributes of the Deity, than the contemplation of his works. These, indeed, exhibited such evident proofs of his power, his wisdom, and his goodness, as were sufficient to convince rational creatures, that a self-existent and infinite Being was the source and origin of all existence. This St. Paul so well understood, that he condemns the Gentiles, because, after having recognised the Supreme Being in the works of the creation, they neglected to worship him, and considers them as inexcus able; Because, says he, the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead. Book Of Distinguished Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Of Distinguished Animals Classic Reprint written by Harry Perry Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of Distinguished Animals Portions of all the following chapters appeared in The Times at intervals during the year 1909, under the title of Studies in the Zoological Gardens and they are now published, with amendment and addition, by the courtesy of The Times Publishing Company. In sketches of such a nature it is impossible, when quoting from authorities, to mention all the sources from which one draws without frequent interruption of the thread of ideas and constant annoyance to the reader. At the end of the volume will be found a list of the books from which quotation is made, and to such of the authors as are still within the reach of gratitude I wish to make acknowledgment of my indebtedness. That the following pages have many shortcomings I am well aware. Some of them I should have hoped to remedy if the work of preparation for the press had been done under less serious disadvantages than are indicated by the address below. Book The Romance of Animal Life

Download or read book The Romance of Animal Life written by John George Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Animal Life: Short Chapters in Natural History See, for example, how absolutely dependent man is upon the earth-worm which he heedlessly treads under his feet, or cuts asunder with his spade. As the late Charles Darwin has shown us, man could not have found a place upon the earth had not the worm prepared the way for him. Last created of all beings, he could not have procured food but for the labours of the earth-worm, to which is due the whole of the soil upon which the trees and grasses find root. Is not this physical fact as romantic as any production of the novelist's brain? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Animal Story Book There was a stage in human growth when sym pathy for any one Of another tribe was scoffed at, or even considered criminal. But this sympathy came; men learned that justice is wider than the tribal limit, though it was still considered absurd to waste pity on Slaves. In time, even that became first a possible, then an accepted thing. The broadening sympathy which is, after all, the law of love, thus took in all Of mankind, and is following further along the lines drawn by the Great Hindu, who taught that in this broadest sympathy should be included the Whole Irving world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Childhood of Animals Finally I have to state my indebtedness, in general terms, to the great army of writers on zoological subjects. To have tried to attribute to its proper source each observation that I have used, or each little piece of half-remembered theory, would have over weighted this book with historical pomp, and puffed out its slight figure to unhealthy repletion. Although there are some observations that are new, I claim credit for the mode of presentation rather than for what is presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories About Animals There was another side, however, to Mayne Reid than that we have touched upon, and this, at the end of five years, drew him back to the average life of his kind. We find him next in Philadelphia, where he began to con tribute stories and Sketches of travel to the newspapers and magazines. Philadelphia was then the most literate city in the United States, the one in which a clever writer was at once encouraged and rewarded. Frank and warm hearted, he made many friends there among journalists and authors. One of these friends was Edgar Allan Poe, whom he often visited at his home in Spring Garden, and concerning whom years after, when he was dead, he wrote with loving tenderness.
