Book excerpt: This book makes a contribution to knowledge of the history of the Augustinian canons in England through a case study of one particular house in the south-west of the country. Plympton Priory in Devon was founded in 1121 by a bishop of Exeter, and through episcopal and lay donations of temporal and spiritual sources of income became one of the wealthiest houses of Augustinian canons in England. Analysis of surviving records reveals the multiplicity of connections existing between the canons and the laity, the secular clergy, the episcopacy, and the Crown until the priory’s dissolution. The result is a multi-faceted study of the roles played by an Augustinian house in society and within the Church in the late Middle Ages.

This collection, the proceedings of the 2017 Glenstal History Conference, examines the role of the canonical movement (those who followed the rule of St Augustine) in Ireland from its emergence as an expression of the Vita Apostolica in the twelfth century, through the dissolution of the monasteries in the Tudor period until its eventual disappearance in the early nineteenth century. This volume combines the evidence for the archaeology, architecture and history of the movement with that relating to its cultural, economic, liturgical, intellectual and pastoral activities. Between them, the contributors provide fascinating insights on a neglected aspect of Irish monastic history while situating it in a broader European ecclesial context.

On Hospitals takes us beyond canon law, Carolingian capitularies, and Justinian's Code and Novels, to late Roman testamentary law, identifying new legislation and legal initiatives in every period. In challenging long established orthodoxies, a new history of the hospital emerges, one that is fundamentally a European history. To the history of law, it offers an unusual lens through which to explore canon law. What this monograph identifies for the first time is that the absence of law is the key. This is a study of what happened when there was no legal inheritance, nor even an authority through which to act. Here, at the fringes of law, pioneers worked, and forgers played. Book excerpt: Pastoral Care and Community in Late Medieval Germany explores how local religious culture was constructed in medieval European Christian society through close study of a set of neglected, late fourteenth-century manuscripts. The Mirror of Priests is a pastoral work written by Albert, an Augustinian canon from the Bavarian market town of Diessen, to guide local priests in their work with parishioners. Multiple versions of the text in Albert's own hand survive and, by comparing them, Deeana Copeland Klepper shows how ostensibly universal religious ideals and laws were adapted, interpreted, and repurposed by those given responsibility to implement them, thereby crafting distinctive, local expressions of Christianity. The vision of Christian community that emerges from Albert's pastoral guide is one in which the messiness of ordinary life is evident. Albert's imagined parish was marked out by geographic and legal boundaries—property and jurisdictional rights, tithes, and sacramental responsibility—as well as symbolic realities. By situating the Mirror of Priests within Albert's physical and conceptual spaces, Klepper affirms the centrality of the parish and its community for those living under the rubric of Christianity, especially outside of large cities. Pivoting between the materiality of texts and the sociocultural contexts of an overlooked manuscript tradition, Pastoral Care and Community in Late Medieval Germany offers fresh insights into the role of parish priests, the pastoral manual genre, and late medieval religious life.
