Download or read book Chapters in the History of Actors and Acting in Ancient Greece written by John Bartholomew O'Connor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters in the History of Actors and Acting in Ancient Greece: Together With a Prosopographia Histrionum Graecorum The study of the technical terms employed to designate the actor and his function was found to be necessary for the sake of gaining a clear conception of the history and meaning of each term, and partly in order that the confusion regarding some of them that has arisen in recent years might be dissipated. The publication of Wilhelm's important work and the discussions to which it has given rise have rendered unnecessary a large part of the chapter on the Athenian actors' contests as originally outlined. We have accordingly confined ourselves here to a brief presenta tion Of the facts which have been established by others, discussing at length only the still uncertain date of the introduction of the comic actors' contest into the City Dionysia. In the second chapter some data are brought together which bear on the sub ject of the specialization of actors after the fourth century. Download or read book Modern Acting written by Cynthia Baron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone has heard of Method acting . . . but what about Modern acting? This book makes the simple but radical proposal that we acknowledge the Modern acting principles that continue to guide actors’ work in the twenty-first century. Developments in modern drama and new stagecraft led Modern acting strategies to coalesce by the 1930s – and Hollywood’s new role as America’s primary performing arts provider ensured these techniques circulated widely as the migration of Broadway talent and the demands of sound cinema created a rich exchange of ideas among actors. Decades after Strasberg’s death in 1982, he and his Method are still famous, while accounts of American acting tend to overlook the contributions of Modern acting teachers such as Josephine Dillon, Charles Jehlinger, and Sophie Rosenstein. Baron’s examination of acting manuals, workshop notes, and oral histories illustrates the shared vision of Modern acting that connects these little-known teachers to the landmark work of Stanislavsky. It reveals that Stella Adler, long associated with the Method, is best understood as a Modern acting teacher and that Modern acting, not Method, might be seen as central to American performing arts if the Actors’ Lab in Hollywood (1941-1950) had survived the Cold War.

Download or read book The End of Acting written by Richard Hornby and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 1992 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Richard Hornby's preface: This book is written for those who act, those who teach acting, and those who are interested in seeing it. It is both a theoretical work and a call for action. This book is an unashamed attack on the American acting establishment ... The concepts derive from my graduate seminars in acting theory and history in the School of Theatre at Florida State University ... Much of the feistiness of those classes carries over into this book ... If my arguments serve only to stimulate new dialogue, they will have been valuable.
