Download or read book Membrane Physiology written by Thomas E. Andreoli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Membrane Physiology (Second Edition) is a soft-cover book containing portions of Physiology of Membrane Disorders (Second Edition). The parent volume contains six major sections. This text encompasses the first three sections: The Nature of Biological Membranes, Methods for Studying Membranes, and General Problems in Membrane Biology. We hope that this smaller volume will be helpful to individuals interested in general physiology and the methods for studying general physiology. THOMAS E. ANDREOLI JOSEPH F. HOFFMAN DARRELL D. FANESTIL STANLEY G. SCHULTZ vii Preface to the Second Edition The second edition of Physiology of Membrane Disorders represents an extensive revision and a considerable expansion of the first edition. Yet the purpose of the second edition is identical to that of its predecessor, namely, to provide a rational analysis of membrane transport processes in individual membranes, cells, tissues, and organs, which in tum serves as a frame of reference for rationalizing disorders in which derangements of membrane transport processes playa cardinal role in the clinical expression of disease. As in the first edition, this book is divided into a number of individual, but closely related, sections. Part V represents a new section where the problem of transport across epithelia is treated in some detail. Finally, Part VI, which analyzes clinical derangements, has been enlarged appreciably.

Book Replica Techniques for Transmission Electron Microscopy

Download or read book Replica Techniques for Transmission Electron Microscopy written by S. M. McCoy and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report concentrates soley on the description of variations in replicating procedures for the transmission electron microscope. It includes techniques for cellulose acetate and direct carbon replication for rough and flat fracture surfaces, collodion dry stripped replicas of polished and etched or flat fracture surfaces, preparation of substrate films on grids for particle examination, and variations in replica wash techniques (i.e., 'fishing'; reflux unit; screen-bridge; and also wax techniques for replicas which tend to fragment badly). The appendix includes material on minimization of artifacts produced during replica preparation, salvage of scrolled replicas, edge retention during replication, and stereo effects. Throughout the text, variations in technique are discussed in order to guide the reader in the selection of an appropriate method to prepare replicas of a given structure. A variety of specialized procedures and detailed explanations are included as well as suggested replicating utensils for basic and specialized techniques. (Author).

Book Electron Microscopy in Microbiology

Download or read book Electron Microscopy in Microbiology written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1988-10-01 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of this acclaimed series deals with electron microscopic techniques applied for the elucidation of microbial structures and structure-function relationships at cellular, sub-cellular, and macromolecular levels. Many of the recent findings on ultrastructural features of microorganisms have been obtained with newly developed methods, though classical approaches have not lost their validity. Therefore, both conventional and new methods have been incorporated into this volume. The topics dealt with are meaningful not only in bacterial cytology but also in physiology, enzymology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, and include aspects of medical and biotechnological application.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1062 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Physiology of Membrane Disorders represents an extensive revision and a considerable expansion of the first edition . THE EDITORS xi Preface to the First Edition The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a rational frame of reference for assessing the pa thophysiology of those disorders in which derangements of membrane transport processes are a major factor responsible for the clinical manifestations of disease. In the present context, we use the term "membrane transport to refer to those molecular processes whose cardinal function, broadly speaking, is processes" in a catholic sense, the vectorial transfer of molecules-either individually or as ensembles-across biological interfaces, the latter including those interfaces which separate different intracellular compartments, the cellular and extracellular com partments, and secreted fluids-such as glomerular filtrate-and extracellular fluids.

Download or read book R Loops written by Andrés Aguilera and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed book compiles a series of laboratory protocols covering the most important aspects of R-loop biology. Beginning with a range of methods allowing for the detection of DNA-RNA hybrids, as well as their purification and visualization by electron microscopy, the volume continues with methods based on the use of RNase H-derived tools to detect DNA-RNA hybrids in vitro and in vivo. Several protocols permit studying non-canonical RNA nucleotides in the R-loop context, as well as a number of specific protocols devoted to the investigation of R-loop topology and their functional roles in the biology of mitochondria and telomeres. Finally, a large block of chapters is dedicated to different methods allowing genome-wide mapping of DNA-RNA hybrids in various organisms. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, R-Loops: Methods and Protocols serves as an ideal resource for those working on R-loop homeostasis but also to scientists studying such areas of molecular and cell biology as genome integrity, DNA replication and repair, chromatin remodeling, transcription, RNA processing, modification and export, as well as for researchers elucidating the molecular mechanisms of cancer and genetic diseases.

Book Spin Electronics

Download or read book Spin Electronics written by Michael Ziese and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 50 years conventional electronics has ignored the electron spin. The manipulation and utilisation of the electron spin heralds an exciting and rapidly changing era in electronics, combining the disciplines of magnetism and traditional electronics. The first generation of "spintronic" devices (such as read heads based on giant magnetoresistance or non-volatile magnetic random access memories) have already gained dominant positions in the market place. This volume, the first of its kind on spin electronics describes all the essential topics for new researchers entering the field. It covers magnetism and semiconductor basics, micromagnetism, experimental techniques, materials science, device fabrication and new developments in spin-dependent processes. At the end of most chapters are a number of exercises and worked problems to aid the reader in understanding this fascinating new field.
