Book excerpt: "I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the LORD, who does all these things." Isaiah 45:7 When God created the world, he brought perfect order out of what was "without form and void." But with human rebellion against God leading to God's curse, disorder was introduced into creation—disorder that we still see all around us today. Tracing the chaos to cosmos theme from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22, pastor-scholar Sidney Greidanus reveals how God is restoring his creation through Jesus Christ, who has already begun to shine light into the darkness and will one day return to bring peace, order, and restoration once and for all. With discussion questions at the end of each chapter and a fourteen-session reading plan, this book is ideal for small groups as well as individual study.

Book excerpt: Kristin Ginelli, Chicago-cop-turned-religion-professor, is horrified when her new Muslim faculty colleague is targeted with a hate crime by self-styled white supremacists. She investigates, wading into the disgusting waters of white supremacist hate online. She is stunned to learn how young people and adults are being tempted into hate and violence on the Internet. As she teaches her religion classes, she comes to realize this is what philosophers and theologians have meant by the demonic. In this kind of extremism, hate rises to the surface and it is hard to keep it down. When a student is killed, and Kristin is threatened, she has to cut through the university's stalling and what looks increasingly like corruption in the Chicago police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to find the killers and try to stem the tide of hate.

Book Answerable Style

Download or read book Answerable Style written by Arnold Stein and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1953-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Answerable Style was first published in 1953. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. By the use of both new and traditional techniques of critical analysis, Arnold Stein presents in this volume of six essays a fresh interpretation of Milton's epic. Beginning with the assumption that style is "answerable" to idea, he has tried to trace Milton's epic vision as it is bodied forth in patterns of structure (the ideas tested in action) and patterns of expression (the ideas tested in style). Mr. Stein explains: "My approach is in part based on an attempt to accept as fact both that I am a twentieth century reader and that this is a seventeenth-century poem. Milton is, I think, illuminated by some modern critical considerations; and some of those considerations are in turn illuminated, and some are found wanting."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apostle Paul leaves no stone unturned as he encourages, enlightens, and informs the Ephesian believers (and us) regarding their duties and responsibilities as Christ's followers. Yes, there are duties and responsibilities for professing Christians, just as there are duties and responsibilities in every phase of life whether it be as children/parents; employee/employer; student/teacher; or whatever field of endeavor one may pursue. The apostle is addressing those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and seek to follow Him, which as Paul knows is not easy. Therefore, in this portion of Scripture he stresses certain truths that will strengthen each and every Christian as they journey through life. The elements may sound simple to learn, but they are difficult to practice day in and day out. What are they? Obedience, discipline, priorities, knowing your heavenly Father (not just knowing about Him), being strong disciples in the faith, and separating ourselves. Developing these traits requires a commitment to adhere to Christ's teachings and commands.

Book excerpt: How does the Bible's teaching on the devil square with psychology and other modern scientific disciplines that seem to have driven Satan into the realm of myth? Why does 666 signify the devil? Is Satan the Antichrist or does that term refer to a human? Popular media has combined a number of diverse traditions, distorting Christian teaching and tradition about Satan and also occasionally distorting common sense. Kelly introduces the reader to what the Bible actually says about Satan and other evil biblical figures.
