Book excerpt: In 1968, the Cold War is at its hottest. A Royal Air Force Special Operator hears an unusual World War II style transmission cutting across his frequency every month at midnight. That in itself is not surprising; static and other stations occasionally come through. In the case of this transmission, though, every day following its appearance, something terrible occurs, whether it is a major crime, a disaster, or an act of terrorism. The operator reports this to his watch commander who passes it up the chain of command. The powers that be, aware of spy scandals, recruit a team. Bill is a police superintendent in a clandestine anti-terrorist office, and Smithy is a wild moorland hermit with excellent radio, cryptography, and fighting skills. Their mission is to confirm that the transmission is real and, if so, to arrest those responsible. Their team soon grows with the addition of Karen, a brilliant student and Bill’s posh girlfriend. Together, they race across the North and Midlands of England and find trouble with the Bulgarian Embassy as well as a Polish gangster and his English thugs. As their trail leads them to a suburban house and a bloody shootout, the squad finds themselves faced with chaos, and their mysterious venture comes to a head.

Book Lighting Up

Download or read book Lighting Up written by Susan Shapiro and published by Delta. This book was released on 2005-12-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the critically acclaimed Five Men Who Broke My Heart, Manhattan journalist Susan Shapiro revisited five self-destructive romances. In her hilarious, illuminating new memoir, Lighting Up, she rejects five self-destructive substances. This difficult quest for clean living starts with Shapiro’s shocking revelation that, at forty, her lengthiest, most emotionally satisfying relationship has been with cigarettes. A two-pack-a-day smoker since the age of thirteen, Susan Shapiro quickly discovers that it’s impossible to be a writer, a nonsmoker, sane, and slender in the same year. The last time she tried to quit, she gained twenty-three pounds, couldn’t concentrate on work, and wanted to kill herself and her husband, Aaron, a TV comedy writer who hates her penchant for puffing away. Yet just as she’s about to choose her vice over her marriage vows, she stumbles upon a secret weapon. Dr. Winters, “the James Bond of psychotherapy,” is a brilliant but unorthodox addiction specialist, a former chain-smoker himself. Working his weird magic on her psyche, he unravels the roots of her twenty-seven-year compulsion, the same dangerous dependency that has haunted her doctor father, her grandfather, and a pair of eccentric aunts from opposite sides of the family, along with Freud and nearly one in four Americans. Dr. Winters teaches her how to embrace suffering, then proclaims that her months of panic, depression, insecurity, vulnerability, and wild mood swings win her the award for “the worst nicotine withdrawal in the history of the world.” Shapiro finally does kick the habit–while losing weight and finding career and connubial bliss–only to discover that the second she’s let go of her long-term crutch, she’s already replaced it with another fixation. After banishing cigarettes, alcohol, dope, gum, and bread from her day-to-day existence, she conquers all her demons and survives deprivation overload. But relying religiously on Dr. Winters, she soon realizes that the only obsession she has left to quit is him. . . . Never has the battle to stem substance abuse been captured with such wit, sophisticated insight, and candor. Lighting Up is so compulsively readable, it’s addictive.

Book excerpt: An eerie and offbeat mystery by a Kafka Prize–winning author. The case confronting Lieutenant Gregory is not one that a man of Scotland Yard would expect. In fact, it is not one any sane man would care to entertain. Bodies are disappearing. The initial assumption is that a grave robber is roaming London and defiling local morgues. But upon further examination, it seems the deceased are, in fact, resurrecting. As Gregory stumbles his way through the tangled clues, seeking advice from scientific, philosophical, and theological experts alike, he finds himself tossed into a baffling metaphysical puzzle of incomprehensible truths and unbelievable realities. Hailed by Kirkus Reviews as “closer to Kafka than the police precinct house,” Lem’s intelligent and puzzling foray into the mystery genre offers an appealing combination of disturbance and delight.

Book The Lure of Modern Science

Download or read book The Lure of Modern Science written by Bruce J. West and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors describe mostly in non-technical language the development of a new scientific paradigm based on nonlinear deterministic dynamics and fractal geometry. The concepts from these two mathematical disciplines are interwoven with data from the physical, social and life sciences. In this way rather sophisticated mathematical concepts are made accessible through experimental data from various disciplines, and the formalism is relegated to appendices. It is shown that the complexity of natural and social phenomena invariably lead to inverse power law distributions, both in terms of probabilities and spectra. This book tries to show how to think differently about familiar phenomena, such as why the bell-shape curve ought not to be used in teaching or in the characterization of such complex phenomena as intelligence.

Scott Bradbury prompts readers to consider what will happen and how to mentally and physically prepare. In his debut work of nonfiction, The Post-Apocalyptic Primer, he examines what life might look like after the end of the world and it's not as abysmal as some might fear. In ten chapters including: Assessing Your Existing Survival Skills, Civilization After the Fall of Civilization, and Eat, Drink, and Be Wary, Bradbury offers commonsense strategies that exponentially boost one's chances of a bright future. Among other Apocalyptic scenarios, he describes what one might expect after a seismic catastrophe, an ice age event, nuclear war, and alien invasion as well as the stages of disorder, which he breaks down into Instant, Coming Soon, and Slow-Burn events. Where someone lives makes a big difference, but besides new threats, there are also new careers, new hobbies, and a whole new adventure, the only trick is to be ready for it.

Book Systems Analysis in Public Policy

Download or read book Systems Analysis in Public Policy written by Ida R. Hoos and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems analysis, which is also called cost/benefit analysis, the planning-programming-budgeting system, risk analysis, and technology assessment, has become the major planning and policy tool of government at all levels. Indeed, it is still gathering momentum in addressing the uncertainties associated with everything from the safety of nuclear energy to the effects of microelectronics. Examining this phenomenon critically, Ida R. Hoos reviews systems analytic techniques in their own circumscribed, simulated world and in the real one, drawing on a wide range of studies in health, education, welfare, crime, and many other areas of public concern, and giving special attention to information systems and databanks. In a new introduction and a new final chapter, Hoos expands her 1972 discussion to consider the ways in which systems analysis, now dominant, governs our present and determines our future. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1972.

Book History and Climate Change

Download or read book History and Climate Change written by Neville Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-29 with total page 911 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History and Climate Change is a balanced and comprehensive overview of the links between climate and man's advance from early to modern times. It draws upon demographic, economic, urban, religious and military perspectives. It is a synthesis of the many historical and scientific theories, which have arisen regarding man's progress through the ages. Central to the book is the question of whether climate variation is a fundamental trigger mechanism from which other historical sequences develop, or one amongst a number of other factors, decisive only when a regime/society is poised for change. Evidence for prolonged climate change is not that extensive. But it is clear that climatic variation has regularly played a part in historical development. Paricular attention is here paid to Europe since AD 211. Cold and warmth, wetness and aridity can create contrary reactions within societies, which can be interpreted in vary different ways by scholars from differenct disciplines. Does climate change exacerbate famine and epidemics? Did climate fluctuation play a part in pivotal historical events such as the mass exodus of Hsuing-nu from China, the pressure of the Huns on the Romans and the genesis of the Crusades? Did the bitter Finnish winter of 1939-40 ensure the ultimate defeat of Hitler? These episodes, and many others are discussed throughout the book in the authors distinctive style, with maps and photographs to illustrate the examples given.
