Book A Festival of Lessons and Carols

Download or read book A Festival of Lessons and Carols written by Hal H. Hopson and published by Alfred Music. This book was released on with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the many churches that do a service of Lessons and Carols every year as well as those new to the tradition, Hal Hopson presents a new edition of that beloved service all in one cover. A Festival of Lessons and Carols contains a variety of carols -- some familiar, some unfamiliar -- arranged in Hopson's trademark majestic style, as well as an original setting of a medieval text. The traditional nine lessons have been updated by Mr. Hopson and reflect today's important linguistic considerations, such as inclusive language, natural poetic phrasing and clarity of thought. The service can be performed with organ alone, but the optional instrumentation offers a greater variety and color. Duration approx. 50 min.

Book The Language Encounter in the Americas 1492 1800

Download or read book The Language Encounter in the Americas 1492 1800 written by Edward G. Gray and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Columbus arrived in the Americas there were, it is believed, as many as 2,000 distinct, mutually unintelligible tongues spoken in the western hemisphere, encompassing the entire area from the Arctic Circle to Tierra del Fuego. This astonishing fact has generally escaped the attention of historians, in part because many of these indigenous languages have since become extinct. And yet the burden of overcoming America's language barriers was perhaps the one problem faced by all peoples of the New World in the early modern era: African slaves and Native Americans in the Lower Mississippi Valley; Jesuit missionaries and Huron-speaking peoples in New France; Spanish conquistadors and the Aztec rulers. All of these groups confronted America's complex linguistic environment, and all of them had to devise ways of transcending that environment - a problem that arose often with life or death implications. For the first time, historians, anthropologists, literature specialists, and linguists have come together to reflect, in the fifteen original essays presented in this volume, on the various modes of contact and communication that took place between the Europeans and the "Natives." A particularly important aspect of this fascinating collection is the way it demonstrates the interactive nature of the encounter and how Native peoples found ways to shape and adapt imported systems of spoken and written communication to their own spiritual and material needs.

Book Ornamentation in Baroque and Post baroque Music

Download or read book Ornamentation in Baroque and Post baroque Music written by Frederick Neumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1983-12-21 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ornaments play an enormous role in the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and ambiguities in their notation (as well as their frequent omission in the score) have left doubt as to how composers intended them to be interpreted. Frederick Neumann, himself a violinist and conductor, questions the validity of the rigid principles applied to their performance. In this controversial work, available for the first time in paperback, he argues that strict constraints are inconsistent with the freedom enjoyed by musicians of the period. The author takes an entirely new look at ornamentation, and particularly that of J. S. Bach. He draws on extensive research in England, France, Germany, Italy, and the United States to show that prevailing interpretations are based on inadequate evidence. These restrictive interpretations have been far-reaching in their effect on style. By questioning them, this work continues to stimulate a reorientation in our understandiing of Baroque and post-Baroque music.
