Book excerpt: The primary message in Changing Course is the compelling need for people to rethink retirement. Based on twenty years research, the book presents unique stories of how pioneers over fifty are showing the way to positive aging. The book is a full frontal assault on retirement-as-leisure, an obsolete, life-threatening concept that should have been retired twenty years ago. Changing Course underscores risks inherent in stereotypical views of aging and offers both grounded theory and practical lessons for fresh perspectives on aging. It contrasts conventional approaches to aging with creative ideas for aging successfully. Changing Course gives pointed advice on five major risks facing people approaching retirement, and suggests specific steps for managing those risks. It also includes seventeen sensible lessons from third age pioneers as a summary of how to change course. The book therefore serves as a navigational chart of sorts to help middle aged individuals explore the myriad possibilities for growth and success in their fifties, sixties, and beyond. Changing Course also presents the innovative concept of Third Age Careers as part of a mix of activities, called a Third Age Portfolio, needed to age successfully. Further, it discusses how organizations will need to employ people over fifty to avoid a capability gap as Boomers retire in droves in the next decade. If you want life after fifty to be an exhilarating new start, rather than a depressing dull finish, this book is for you.

Book Changing Course in Latin America

Download or read book Changing Course in Latin America written by Kenneth M. Roberts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the impact of economic crises and free-market reforms on party systems and political representation in contemporary Latin America. It explains why some patterns of market reform align and stabilize party systems, whereas other patterns of reform leave party systems vulnerable to widespread social protest and electoral instability. In contrast to other works on the topic, this book accounts for both the institutionalization and the breakdown of party systems, and it explains why Latin America turned to the Left politically in the aftermath of the market-reform process. Ultimately, it explains why this "left turn" was more radical in some countries than others and why it had such varied effects on national party systems.

Book Changing the Course of Autism

Download or read book Changing the Course of Autism written by Bryan Jepson and published by Sentient+ORM. This book was released on 2009-10-26 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Changing the Course of Autism, Dr. Bryan Jepson and Jane Johnson reveal the biological and neurological conditions behind autism spectrum disorders. Foreword by Katie Wright, daughter of the founders of Autism Speaks Rather than simply masking symptoms with drugs like Ritalin and Prozac, Dr. Bryan Jepson and Jane Johnson explain that autism can be treated by reducing the neurological inflammation that is part of the disease process. The authors have seen autistic behaviors improve dramatically or disappear completely with appropriate medical treatment. The book reviews the medical literature regarding the biological nature of the disease, including the potential connection between vaccines and autism. “This book will be the new PDR of autism for parents and physicians. Incredibly well referenced and easy to understand, it challenges long-held beliefs about this condition and introduces us to the new medical model of autism. An important book that every professional and family member who deals with autism must own.” —Lee Grossman, former president and CEO, Autism Society of America “The idea that the suffering of autism could be rooted in environmental injuries poses a huge challenge to medicine, science and society. Opening our hearts and minds to fresh thinking is the only way forward. Dr. Jepson’s information-filled book moves the reader through the discomfort of painful news to a framework for constructive responses.” —Martha Herbert, M.D., Ph.D., co-author of The Autism Revolution “The parent of an autistic child, Jepson encourages physicians and parents to view autism ‘as a medical illness, not just a behavior disorder.’ He discusses the neurological, gastrointestinal, genetic, and environmental issues that complicate our understanding of autism.” —Library Journal

Book Changing the Course of Failure

Download or read book Changing the Course of Failure written by Sandra Stotsky and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-05-18 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic purpose of this book is to help policy makers at all levels of government understand that (1) widespread adolescent underachievement is not susceptible to solution by educational interventions no matter how much money is allocated to public education; and (2) there are unidentified educational and civic costs to focusing on low achievement and to expecting public institutions of education (for K–12 and college) to solve a growing social problem. Many policy makers seem to think that teachers/schools are the primary cause of low achievement. Educational institutions still cannot solve a non-education-caused problem and haven’t done so for over fifty years despite all the public and private money that has been allocated. The book concludes with suggested policies for addressing the damage to public education from “gap-closing” standards and with suggested areas for policy making in order to change the current course of failure for many low-achieving students.

Book Chance Order Change The Course of International Law General Course on Public International Law

Download or read book Chance Order Change The Course of International Law General Course on Public International Law written by James Crawford and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Also available as an e-book Chance, Order, Change: The Course of International Law, General Course on Public International Law by J. Crawford The course of international law over time needs to be understood if international law is to be understood. This work aims to provide such an understanding. It is directed not at topics or subject headings — sources, treaties, states, human rights and so on — but at some of the key unresolved problems of the discipline. Unresolved, they call into question its status as a discipline. Is international law “law” properly so-called ? In what respects is it systematic ? Does it — can it — respect the rule of law ? These problems can be resolved, or at least reduced, by an imaginative reading of our shared practices and our increasingly shared history, with an emphasis on process. In this sense the practice of the institutions of international law is to be understood as the law itself. They are in a dialectical relationship with the law, shaping it and being shaped by it. This is explained by reference to actual cases and examples, providing a course of international law in some standard sense as well.
