Book Changing Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Changing Germany Classic Reprint written by Charles Tower and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Changing Germany The publication of another book about Germany in connection with the war may require some explanation, even if defence is difficult. It may therefore be well to state that the following chapters, written to please no one and at nobody's invitation, were the outcome of a disappointment. When, upon the outbreak of war, I was compelled hastily to quit my home in Charlottenburg, leaving behind me books and clothes, and even a carefully packed trunk which had been intended to accompany me to the "only unexploited valley in the Canton Valais" (an annual illusion whose destruction is, however, rarely unpleasant), I found that, for a time at any rate, there was nothing to do but take a holiday, the first long holiday in England for thirteen years. Book History of Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Germany Classic Reprint written by Bayard Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Germany The History of Germany is not the History of a Nation, but of a Race. It has little unity, therefore: it is complicated, broken, and attached on all sides to the histories of other countries. In its earlier periods it covers the greater part of Europe, and does not return exclusively to Germany until after France, Spain, England and the Italian States have been founded. Thus, even before the fall of the Roman Empire, it becomes the main trunk out of which branch the histories of nearly all European nations, and must of necessity he studied as the connecting link between Ancient and Modern History. The records of no other race throw so much light upon the development of all civilized lands, during a period of fifteen hundred years. The need of a work of this kind being evident, I have endeavored to supply it in such a manner as to simplify the task of both teachers and pupils. My aim has been to present a clear, continuous narrative, omitting no episode of importance, yet preserving a distinct line of connection from century to century. Besides referring to all the best authorities, I have based my labors mainly upon three recent German works, - that of Dittmar, as the fullest; of Von Rochau, as the most impartial, and of Dr. David Muller, as the most readable. By constructing an entirely new narrative from these, compressing the material into less than half the space which each occupies, and avoiding the interruptions and changes by which all are characterized, I hope to have made this History convenient and acceptable to our schools. The historical maps will be found to be an important aid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Reformation in Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Reformation in Germany Classic Reprint written by Henry C. Vedder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation in Germany Within a generation a new way of looking at all history has become common among students of the past, a recognition of the fundamental importance of the economic basis of society, and the influence of economic changes on all human institutions and movements. The economic interpretation of history has not yet been applied to the period of the Reformation, and that fact is the chief justification of this attempt to retell a story that has been so often told, yet told inadequately. That the great religious struggle of the sixteenth century was only a phase of the social revolution then going on in Europe and effecting a transforma tion of all its institutions, that momentous economic changes were the underlying cause of political and religious movements, are ideas for which the reader will look in vain in books on the Reformation accessible to him. But these ideas are now accepted by most historical students, and in the light of them all the history of the past is undergoing a reinterpretation. The external events of the Reformation have been told before with substantial accuracy; what is now needed is illumination of the facts by the light of this new knowledge. By itself this would be a sufficient justification for the writing of a new book on this old subject. But there are other reasons. For more than a generation, Europe has been swept with lighted candle to find the smallest fragment of document, or one overlooked fact, that could shed light on the Reformation period. The result has been the accumulation of an enormous mass of material, much of it trivial and jejune - mountains of chaff, to speak plainly, with here and there a kernel of precious wheat. Little, relatively, has been done in the way of comparing, sifting, unifying this mass of useful and useless information. Monographs have multiplied, it is true, until every character of the age, however little noteworthy, has his biography; and every event, however obscure, has its separate doc umented story. Has not the time come for the telling of the larger story once more, in the light of this newly discovered body of fact? Book The Literature of Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Literature of Germany Classic Reprint written by J. G. Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of Germany It is essentially subjective. German mediaeval poetry may not be as successful in making the golden Middle Age gorgeous upon earth again as other mediaeval literatures; but it gives us more penetrating glimpses into the inner life of the denizen of the Middle Ages, and thereby awakens a sympathetic interest in the modern reader. Its interpretation, again, of that great new-birth which we associate with the word Reformation appears in the still modern form Of a liberation of the individual from a world that took no stock of individuals. Lastly, the great German literature of the eighteenth century deals constantly with problems, ethic as well as aesthetic, which are as vital and. Real to us today as they were to that far-off time. We have to accept frankly the comparative absence of the formal beauty which the Latin peoples of Europe can point to in their literatures Germany has no Dante, Ariosto or Tasso; no Lope de Vega; no Corneille or Moliere but, on the other hand, her essential contribution to the wealth of the world's imagination has always centred in the interpretation Of heart and soul. Her literature, in spite of its broken endeavour, its fragmentary incomplete ness, possesses in this universal subjectivity a. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany and the United States To be a patriotic American citizen is to be also a friend to democracy and humanity, as well as a strong peace advocate. All such citizens are standing firmly with Pres ident Wilson in the controversy with Germany and thor oughly approve of his demand that she show some respect for international law, cease her attacks on peaceful mer chant vessels and quit assassinating American citizens. It is thought that the crisis that arose over the de struction of the Arabic has passed and there will be a satisfactory settlement of it. The German embassador at Washington has assured the United States government that no more such outrages will occur. If Germany really means to comply with President Wilson's demand, it marks a radical change in the meth ods and conduct of her submarine warfare against Eng land, neutral commerce and against humanity. Her war on the sea, however, differs not at all from her war on land and in the air. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Public Education in Germany and in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Public Education in Germany and in the United States Classic Reprint written by L. R. Klemm and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in Germany and in the United States This book is an attempt at contributing something toward a mutual understanding of two nations which, educationally considered, are at the head of the column of civilization. Having recently received an unmistakable warning, that human strength is not inexhaustible, I hasten to complete the book, which will preach my last sermon, unadorned but full of good will to mankind. As I did twenty years ago, I recently went to Europe to inspect schools, especially, to see what the Germans accomplished in their rural schools, and incidentally to find some educational pearls. I do not care to fill the pages of my book with laws dealing with the organization or administration of German schools, for the laws of monarchies necessarily differ from those of a republic; principles and motives under the two kinds of government are dissimilar, hence also their dissimilar laws. Nor shall I fill the book with descriptions and pictures of school buildings, for neither the organization of schools nor their architecture make the schools. "What can it help us, if we have Windsor castles as school houses, when incompetency, ignorance and inexperience preside over the school rooms!" (Supt. A. J. Rickoff). The teacher is the school; nothing can change that. It is the German teacher's professional preparation which secures his success. I am often asked: "Send me some courses of study of German schools, so that I may get a standard of comparison for our own efforts." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature The news of the occurrence spread rapidly, and all through the day two or three hundred people from Rodez - men, women, and children - were standing on both shores staring with a look of fascination and self-induced horror into the depths of the ravine. The question was raised whether it was not a will-o'-the-wisp that had misled the old man. A woman alleged that she had spoken with a shepherd who declared he had heard a cry for help; this, it is true, occurred about midnight, and Fualdes had left his house at eight o'clock. A stout tinker contended that the darkness had not been as dense as all believed; he him self had crossed the fields, on his way from La Valette, at nine o'clock, and the moon was then shining. The inspec tor of customs took him severely to task, and informed him that a new moon had made its appearance the day before, as one could easily find out by looking in the calendar. The tinker shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that in such con junctures even the calendar was not to be trusted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Classics, Vol. 13 Scmllm's Maria Stuart is one of his most popular plays both in and out of Germany, and it meets with great favour whether seen on the stage, read for amuse ment, or studied in the school-room. The primary con ditions of a full enjoyment of the drama are, of course, that the reader should possess a genuine love of poetry, that he should be able to peruse the drama in the original language, and finally that he should understand the tragedy in all its bearings. In the present edition I have endea voured to furnish all reasonable help to the fulfilment of these two conditions. In general, I have followed the principle adopted in all my former editions of German Classics in this Series, viz. To edit them in the manner in which the ancient Classics have as a rule been edited. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
