This book was released on 1983 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this symposium was to improve understanding of thenature of the spruce budworm problem in Ontario, and to generatediscussion on five theme questions relating to the importance ofthe problem in Ontario in the future (1982-2000). The fivequestions were: 1. How important will the spruce-fir componentbe? 2. What are the attitudes of forest industry towards futureutilization of balsam fir? 3. In what forest use patterns willthe spruce budworm be important? 4. What management actionsshould be taken now to reduce future impact? 5. What informationis needed to facilitate management of the spruce budworm problem?

Book How Damage to Balsam Fir Develops After a Spruce Budworm Epidemic

Download or read book How Damage to Balsam Fir Develops After a Spruce Budworm Epidemic written by Thomas Frederick McLintock and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1948 to 1952 a light to medium spruce budworm infestation occurred in the spruce-fir forests of northern Maine. During this period both the degree of infestation and the acreage affected fluctuated considerably, but the population remained below the damage level. In 1953 there was a general reduction in budworm population in all portions of northern Maine except a relatively small area of same 20,000 acres near Madawaska Lake. Here a marked increase in infestation occurred. Because of possible damage to trees on this area and the hazard of spread to adjacent areas, this tract was sprayed in the spring of 1954. Meanwhile a very severe outbreak over an area of several thousand square miles in the nearby Province of New Brunswick has become a serious threat to the spruce-fir forests of Maine.

Book Changes in Downed and Dead Woody Material Following a Spruce Beetle Outbreak on the Kenai Peninsula Alaska

Download or read book Changes in Downed and Dead Woody Material Following a Spruce Beetle Outbreak on the Kenai Peninsula Alaska written by Bethany Schulz and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forests of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, underwent a major spruce beetle(Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby)) outbreak in the 1990s. A repeated inventory of forest resources was designed to assess the effects of the resulting widespread mortality of spruce trees, the dominant component of the Kenai forests. Downed woody materials, fuel heights, and moss depths were recorded during each inventory. Changes in downed and dead woody materials are summarized by forest type and harvest activity, compiled by fuel timelag classes. Fuel heights, fine fuels, and sound large fuels increased between 1987 and 2000. Moss depths and rotten large fuels decreased. Harvested white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) showed the greatest increase of fine fuel classes.
