Book excerpt: Observed seasonal and interannual variations in the surface elevation over the summit of the Greenland ice sheet are modeled using a new temperature-dependent formulation of firn-densification and observed accumulation variations. The observed elevation variations are derived from ERS (European Remote Sensing)-1 and ERS-2 radar altimeter data for the period between April 1992 and April 1999. A multivariate linear/sine function is fitted to an elevation time series constructed from elevation differences measured by radar altimetry at orbital crossovers. The amplitude of the seasonal elevation cycle is 0.25 m peak-to-peak, with a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. Inter-annually, the elevation decreases to a minimum in 1995, followed by an increase to 1999, with an overall average increase of 4.2 cm a(exp -1) for 1992 to 1999. Our densification formulation uses an initial field-density profile, the AWS (automatic weather station) surface temperature record, and a temperature-dependent constitutive relation for the densification that is based on laboratory measurements of crystal growth rates. The rate constant and the activation energy commonly used in the Arrhenius-type constitutive relation for firn densification are also temperature dependent, giving a stronger temperature and seasonal amplitudes about 10 times greater than previous densification formulations. Summer temperatures are most important, because of the strong non-linear dependence on temperature. Much of firn densification and consequent surface lowering occurs within about three months of the summer season, followed by a surface build-up from snow accumulation until spring. Modeled interannual changes of the surface elevation, using the AWS measurements of surface temperature and accumulation and results of atmospheric modeling of precipitation variations, are in good agreement with the altimeter observations.

Book excerpt: All available 10-m snow temperatures from the Greenland ice sheet have been collected and analyzed using multiple regression techniques to develop equations capable of accurately predicting these temperatures. The resulting equations show that 10-m snow temperatures in north Greenland and its sub-areas can be accurately predicted from the independent parameters, latitude and elevation. Longitude was found to be another significant parameter in south Greenland. In all cases the values of the multiple correlation coefficients were .928 or greater. Gradients of 10-m snow temperatures vs elevation for north Greenland are close to the dry adiabatic lapse rate, indicating adiabatic warming of katabatic winds as the controlling mechanism in the altitudinal distribution of both mean annual air temperatures and 10-m snow temperatures in dry snow. The data also suggest that south Greenland is colder with respect to its latitude and longitude than north Greenland. An isotherm contour map showing the distribution of 10-m snow temperatures on the Greenland ice sheet calculated from the prediction equations was prepared. A tabulation of the elevations and sources as well as brief studies of Marie Byrd Land and Victoria Land in the Antarctic are included. (Author).

Book excerpt: In this thesis we constrain a three-dimensional thermomechanical model of Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) evolution from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21 ka BP) to the present-day using, primarily, observations of relative sea level (RSL) as well as field data on past ice extent. The new model (Huy2) fits a majority of the observations and is characterised by a number of key features: (i) the ice sheet had an excess volume (relative to present) of 4.1 m ice-equivalent sea level at the LGM, which increased to reach a maximum value of 4.6 m at 16.5 ka BP; (ii) retreat from the continental shelf was not continuous around the entire margin, as there was a Younger Dryas readvance in some areas. The final episode of marine retreat was rapid and relatively late (c. 12 ka BP), leaving the ice sheet land based by 10 ka BP; (iii) in response to the Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM) the ice margin retreated behind its present-day position by up to 80 km in the southwest, 20 km in the south and 80 km in a small area of the northeast. As a result of this retreat the modelled ice sheet reaches a minimum extent between 5 and 4 ka BP, which corresponds to a deficit volume (relative to present) of 0.17 m ice-equivalent sea level. The results suggest that remaining discrepancies between the model and the observations are likely associated with non-Greenland ice load, differences between modelled and observed present-day ice elevation around the margin, lateral variations in Earth structure and/or the pattern of ice margin retreat. Predictions of present-day vertical land motion generated using the new Huy2 model are highly sensitive to variations of upper mantle viscosity. Depending on the Earth model adopted, different periods of post-LGM ice loading change dominate the present-day response in particular regions of Greenland. These results will be a useful resource when interpreting existing and future observations of vertical land motion in Greenland. In comparison to the sparse number of.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Climatic information available from the spatially extensive suite of firn and ice cores collected under the Program for Arctic and Regional Climate Assessment (PARCA), in conjunction with other data, provides an unparalleled opportunity to investigate accumulation changes over the Greenland ice sheet and to assess its ability to record and preserve a history of North Atlantic climate variability. The ice core derived accumulation histories demonstrate that the influence of glaciological noise on the climate signal is strongly influenced by the accumulation rate. Thus, it may be difficult to discern regionally representative climate signals from individual cores at lower accumulation sites on short time scales suggesting that either time or spatial averaging of the records is necessary. Individual rotated principal components analysis (RPCA) on the time series of net annual accumulation, the total concentration of insoluble dust particles, and the (delta)18O annual average and seasonal extrema reveal that cores located in different regions of the ice sheet do not vary consistently for the period of record in this study (1965-1996). Specifically, cores from southern Greenland vary in a manner different from those in the central west region. Thus, proxy climate histories drawn from a single core record are not necessarily representative of the entire ice sheet. Comparison of the scores associated with the central west and southern Greenland spatial patterns with atmospheric and oceanic data suggest that different processes may be responsible for delivery of precipitation to each region. Correlations of the North Atlantic Oscillation with the core data, combined with composites of mean sea level pressure and 500 hPA heights for accumulation extremes, suggest a negative relationship with the central west region during winter, spring, and summer. Conversely, the same analyses for the southern region suggest a positive relationship to the NAO during summer. Accumulation in the central west region is likely influenced by the NAO during winter and spring, as well as by associated changes in surface temperatures over Canada and sea surface temperatures in the Baffin Bay/Davis Strait. Alternatively, accumulation in southern Greenland is consistently associated with changes in the Pacific.
