Download or read book Women in Golf written by David L. Hudson Jr. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the thirst for more information about women's golf, very little exists about its history outside of books about the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Hudson fills this void, offering a complete history of women in golf. He focuses on the fascinating development of women's golf, the creation of the women's tour, star athletes of the past, the astronomical rise of the present-day tour greats, and the future of the sport. Golf may well have replaced baseball as America's pastime, and the sport enjoys incredible popularity across the globe. At the professional level, women's golf continues to escalate in popularity and media attention, particularly with the dominance of LPGA champion Annika Sorenstam and the interest surrounding teenage phenom Michelle Wie. Despite the thirst for more information about women's golf, very little exists about its history outside of books about the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Hudson's new book fills this void, focusing on the fascinating development of women's golf, the creation of the women's tour, star athletes of the past, and the astronomical rise of the present-day tour greats. In addition, Hudson examines women's golf in the context of the country's history of discrimination against women. Women's golf grew in popularity after the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, granting the right of suffrage. Unfortunately, gender discrimination remains a reality in the world of golf in certain locales of country club golf. Nonetheless, women's golf has never been more popular. For example, the Futures Tour, where girls and young women hone their skills on the way to the LPGA, has grown to more than 300 players from 27 countries, making it the largest international developmental tour in the world. And the 2006 LPGA Tour featured 34 events with prize money nearing $50 million, the highest ever in LPGA history. In 1890, Hudson writes, the Washington Post reported that some girls are anxious to learn golf, because they are really fond of sport and exercise; others, because it gives them a chance to show off a natty suit. Those girls are now acknowledged as women—and this book shows how very far they, and their sport, have come.

Book excerpt: Jackie Pung: Women's Golf Legend tells the story of an inspiring woman revered as one of Hawaii's greatest golfers. Pung was a teenage golf protégé who became one of the top women competitors on the LPGA tour for twelve consecutive years--but the journey wasn't easy. Her self-described "life of inner turmoil" is punctuated with heartbreaking moments, such as her seemingly victorious final stroke at the 1957 U.S. Women's Open. Only minutes later, she was disqualified on a technicality. While author Betty Dunn carefully follows the ups and downs in Pung's golf career, the accompanying life lessons make this a relevant read for the non-golfer as well. Through financial and family hardships, racial discrimination, mental collapse, and one-hundred-pound weight swings, Pung struggles to find her place in the world. And she does, making friends, such as Bob Hope, along the way. In her eighty-plus years, Jackie Pung has gained fame, but not fortune. Nonetheless, she believes she has angels on her shoulders. They serve as her guides while she continues to pursue her mission in life: to share her gifts with others. Through this story, she is able to do just that.

Book And That s That

Download or read book And That s That written by Louise Suggs and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AND THATS THAT! is the life story of one of golfs greatest champions. Louise Suggs shares a rich and colorful insight into the courage it took for her and a small group of women in the post WWII years to step out and build a womens professional sports organization - the Ladies Professional Golf Association. One of the LPGAs 13 Founders and one of the original Hall of Fame members, Louise Suggs began to make her name in golf with a dazzling amateur career, a dominant eight-year stretch during which she won every crown of significance in the womens game - many of them on multiple occasions. Louise went on to win 60 professional titles, a number bettered by only three other women in the 63-year history of the LPGA. She also triumphed in 11 major championships - an achievement bested by only two other women. A Few Words About Louise Suggs Louise deserves great credit for the work she did in making the LPGA a reality. She was a delight to play with. Her swing was a magnificent combination of fluid rhythm, balance and grace. She was an unselfish mentor to me, and Im honored to call her friend. - Mickey Wright, World Golf Hall of Fame Member Louise is an inspiration and a role model for all women and girls to dream big and commit to making it happen - even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. Her remarkable life story is humble, heroic, and humorous, and demonstrates how much is possible when you are true to yourself and never lose sight of always doing the right thing. - Cindy Davis, President Nike Golf - Vice President Nike, Inc. What is most impressive about Louise is her absolute humility in the face of such extraordinary accomplishments. What she has done throughout her life and career warrant a Paul Bunyan-sized ego, yet Louise exhibits nothing less than grace, dignity and an authentic spirit. While the LPGA is lucky to have Louise as a hero, I believe no one is more fortunate than the person who can call Louise a friend.- Ty Votaw, Executive Vice President - Chief Global Communications Officer PGA Tour The LPGA wouldnt be even close to what it is today if it hadnt been for Louise and some of the other players of her era. Louise has always been a woman of integrity and conviction. This guided her through her life and that is what I have always loved about her. - Beth Daniel, World Golf Hall of Fame Member, 2009 U.S. Solheim Cup Captain The goal for a life well lived should be the ability to leave your mark - on the people you met, the places you visited, and in the career you pursued. Suffice it to say that no one has left a more permanent mark than Louise Suggs. Because of the courage, vision, and perseverance of Louise and her fellow LPGA Founders, women all over the world can pursue their dreams in this wonderful game. - Mike Whan, LPGA Commissioner

Book excerpt: Every golfer has a story. And for many, sharing stories about the game's challenges and pleasures, legends and lore, is as much a joy as playing the game itself. Amy Alcott, one of golf's great personalities and an LPGA Hall of Fame member, has drawn upon her remarkable network of well-known golfing friends and gathered their stories for the first time ever. In this entertaining and fascinating collection of candid conversations, Alcott offers a rare look at the personal lives and experiences -- both on and off the golf course -- of prominent entertainers, athletes, political leaders, and other influential figures. A fierce love of golf connects them all, but their varied anecdotes show how this magical sport has touched each of their lives in unique ways. Some highlights: Bill Clinton reveals why Hillary encouraged him to start playing again in his late twenties; Jack Nicholson explains how he began to play golf in his forties and got good enough to shoot a sixty-five; Ben Crenshaw reminisces about his close relationship with Harvey Penick and about winning the 1995 Masters just days after serving as a pallbearer at Penick's funeral; and Jim Nantz compares his relationship to his dad with the close relationship that Tiger Woods had with his own father. And many, many more. At times poignant, illuminating, and laugh-out-loud funny, The Leaderboard is sure to inspire and capture the imagination of golf fans everywhere.
