Book Still Paving the Way for Madam President

Download or read book Still Paving the Way for Madam President written by Nichola D. Gutgold and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Madam President moves into the Oval Office of the White House, she will share a path that several women have helped to pave. Often left off the history pages—and out of the minds of many Americans—are the presidential bids of several women: Margaret Chase Smith, 1964; Shirley Chisholm, 1972; Patricia Schroeder,1988; Elizabeth Dole, 2000; Carol Moseley Braun 2004; and Hillary Clinton, 2008/ 2016. Still Paving the Way for Madam President shows the progress women candidates have made as they have moved from symbolic candidates to viable candidates and in 2016, the Democratic nominee. This study shines a light on the persistent obstacles that face women candidates and offers insight into what it will take to finally shatter the seemingly impenetrable political glass ceiling.

Book excerpt: New aspects of the misogyny that impacts girls and women worldwide continue to emerge every day. However, recent movements (e.g., #MeToo, Time's Up, the Women's March) indicate a strong hunger for a meaningful resource for thoughtful activists. Impassioned but practical, this book discusses the social contexts of misogyny, such as toxic masculinity and rape culture. It traces the history of misogyny and considers its meaning today-what is new and what is old. The author also proposes strategies for effective feminist action. Written for advocates of gender equality who are already aware of misogyny, the book includes Action Steps as tools for activism on both the individual and political levels. Misogyny is a timely text that offers concrete guidance as we strive for the egalitarian society that, despite all setbacks, we are capable of achieving.

Book Women of Consequence

Download or read book Women of Consequence written by Jeanne Varnell and published by Big Earth Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado Women's Hall of Fame was founded in 1985, by a group of women who were concerned that both historic and contemporary women who shared foresight, vision, enthusiasm, and the power of accomplishment were not receiving appropriate acknowledgment. Fearful that splendid achievements would be forgotten, they wished to honor women who, during their lifetime, made a significant contribution to Colorado as a state or territory. It is the hope of the founders that by so honoring Colorado's women of consequence, their spirits might inspire future generations. In the first decade since the founding, fifty-nine women were selected for induction. Although historians habitually ignored the vital part that women played in the building of the West, in actuality these women's lives contain plots and characters that would enliven the most gripping novels. We have saints, like Frances Wisebart Jacobs and the theatrical angel Helen Bonfils; activists such as Josephine Roche and Rachel Noel; a scientific genius in Florence Sabin; and visionaries like Dana Crawford. There are tragedies, as with the Tabor wives, and the lighter-hearted tales of Mary Elitch Long and Mary Coyle Chase.Women of Consequence provides a bonanza of role models who opened new frontiers for women in so many fields, including business, journalism and newspaper publishing, science and medicine, law, politics, education, charity work, botany and even taxidermy. These stories are sure to inspire, delight, and instruct readers throughout Colorado, from young adults to senior citizens, whether they've lived here all their lives or moved here recently.

Book excerpt: This book examines how women candidates, voters, and office holders shape U.S. political processes and institutions, lending their perspectives to gradually evolve American life and values. This book provides an encyclopedic sourcebook on the evolution of women's involvement in American politics from the colonial era to the present, covering all of the individuals, organizations, cultural forces, political issues, and legal decisions that have collectively served to elevate the role of women at the ballot box, on the campaign trail, in Washington, and in state- and city-level political offices across the country. The in-depth essays document and examine the rising prominence of women as voters, candidates, public officials, and lawmakers, enabling readers to understand how U.S. political processes and institutions have been—and will continue to be—shaped by women and their perspectives on American life and values. The entries cover a range of women politicians and officials; female activists and media figures; relevant organizations and interest groups, such as Emily's List, League of Women Voters, and National Right to Life; key laws, court cases, and events, such as the Nineteenth Amendment, the Equal Rights Amendment, the Seneca Falls Convention, the passage of Title IX, and Roe v. Wade; and other topics, like media coverage of appearance, women's roles as campaign strategists/fundraisers, gender differences in policy priorities, and the gender gap in political ambitions. The text is supplemented by sidebars that highlight selected landmarks in women's political history in the United States, such as the 2012 election of Tammy Baldwin, the first openly gay U.S. senator.

  • Pages : 205 pages

Download or read book Leveraging written by David M. Anderson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-04 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the current domestic and global political and economic landscape and will show that there are three different but related kinds of leverage that together have emerged as the dominant strategy in economics, politics and international relations. The economic crisis of 2008-09 was called by most economists a crisis of “over-leverage.” Yet no one has argued that there has also been a leverage crisis or at least a “leverage challenge,” in other aspects of life. The This book argues that there is a “leverage mean” in between the extremes of too little leverage and too much leverage that provides the basis for resolving the various crises and challenges. This book, which grows out of a Brookings Institution paper “The Age of Leverage,” will analyze bargaining leverage, resource leverage and economic investment leverage and should draw the attention of students and teachers in political and economic philosophy.
