Book excerpt: Chamber Music: A Research and Information Guide is a reference tool for anyone interested in chamber music. It is not a history or an encyclopedia but a guide to where to find answers to questions about chamber music. The third edition adds nearly 600 new entries to cover new research since publication of the previous edition in 2002. Most of the literature is books, articles in journals and magazines, dissertations and theses, and essays or chapters in Festschriften, treatises, and biographies. In addition to the core literature obscure citations are also included when they are the only studies in a particular field. In addition to being printed, this volume is also for the first time available online. The online environment allows for information to be updated as new research is introduced. This database of information is a "live" resource, fully searchable, and with active links. Book Chamber Music in American Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chamber Music in American Schools Classic Reprint written by Charles W. Hughes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chamber Music in American Schools This is a study of chamber music, of the instruments used in playing it, of its social implications and of the part it can play in elementary and secondary schools. Since a fair test of a school sub jett may be made by noting the changes it is capable of producing in an individual, we may start by stating what a school child may reasonably be expected to gain from playing chamber music. In the following pages a large number of possible instrumental com himations are studied together with the music suitable to them. If we expose a child to music of this kind for a number of years, what will he have gained? Obviously we have given him another outlet, another way of expressing himself. Most schools provide many such channels. Among such outlets are creative writing, drawing and painting, engaging in crafts and the like. 'in a few schools children are taught to make music in small groups. In many schools they play and sing together in large groups, in chorus, orchestra, and band. The contribution which these larger groups make to individual development differs markedly from that made by participation in smaller groups. In the large chorus, each individual sings, but his voice blends with those of his fellows. He is not an isolated in dividual, but a participant in a group expression. The virtues of good chorus singers lie very largely in this willingness to merge themselves with the singing group, in the surrender of their musical will to that of the conductor. In the same way a good orchestral player accepts the conductor's conception of tempo, of shading. Of phrasing and, if he is a really effective player, forgets himself in the effort to realize the ideal of performance which the conductor is striving for. Such effort carries with it a feeling of identification with the group, of a common end which is its own reward. Expression in chamber music, however, is not a matter of masses but of individuals, and the kind of cooperation which it demands is of a freer more individual kind. Each instrument of the group has something to say in turn. While a good performance demands that each player subordinate himself at the right time.it also calls upon him to take the lead when his part has something of importance. In short, we may say that the emphasis in chamber music is rather on initiative and on individual intelligence while the larger groups depend to a greater extent on group cooperation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for the music student, the professional musician, and the music lover, Chamber Music: An Essential History covers repertoire from the Renaissance to the present, crossing genres to include string quartets, piano trios, clarinet quintets, and other groupings. Mark A. Radice gives a thorough overview and history of this long-established and beloved genre, typically performed by groups of a size to fit into spaces such as homes or churches and tending originally toward the string and wind instruments rather than percussion. Radice begins with chamber music's earliest expressions in the seventeenth century, discusses its most common elements in terms of instruments and compositional style, and then investigates how those elements play out across several centuries of composers- among them Mozart, Bach, Haydn, and Brahms- and national interpretations of chamber music. While Chamber Music: An Essential History is intended largely as a textbook, it will also find an audience as a companion volume for musicologists and fans of classical music, who may be interested in the background to a familiar and important genre.

Book Beyond the Notes

Download or read book Beyond the Notes written by Susan Tomes and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the life of the dedicated professional musician more vividly and honestly than any other work I've read. ALAN RUSBRIDGERSusan Tomes, a rare example of a leading musician who writes about the craft of performance, describes her experience of twenty years of rehearsal, concerts and recording. Her performing life has been centred on chamber music and the need to communicate it fully to an audience hungry for meaningful musical experience. Susan Tomes was a founder member and the pianist of both Domus and the Florestan Trio, award-winning groups at the top of their field. Part One is a series of diaries describing their travels and performances: Domus in the 1980s with its own portable concert hall, struggling to create the conditions for informal but intense concert performances, and the Florestan Trio, currently one of the world's finest piano trios. Part Two is a collection of thought-provoking essays about teachers, making records, practising and rehearsing, audiences, earning a living, and the particular challenges of being a concert pianist. Beyond the Notes gives an unusually candid view of the complexities of a life in music.SUSAN TOMES, alongside her packed concert schedule, is a frequent contributor, on music and other subjects, to the Guardian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'They are not for you but for a later age!' Ludwig van Beethoven, on the Opus 59 quartets. Tackling the Beethoven quartets is a rite of passage that has shaped the Takács Quartet's work together for over forty years. Using the history of the composition and first performances of the quartets as the backbone to his story, Edward Dusinberre, first violinist of the Takács since 1993 - recounts the life of the Quartet from its inception in Hungary, through emigration to the US and its present-day life as one of the world's renowned string quartets. He also describes what it was like for him, as a young man fresh out of the Juilliard School, to join the Quartet as its first non-Hungarian member - an exhilarating challenge. Beethoven for a Later Age takes the reader inside the life of a quartet, vividly showing how four people enjoy making music together over a long period of time. The key, the author argues, is in balancing continuity with change and experimentation - a theme that also lies at the heart of Beethoven's remarkable compositions.

Download or read book Chamber Music written by Will Ashon and published by Faber & Faber Social. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Each of these chambers contains wonders of history, destiny, and mythology. Chamber Music is hip hop as race and class politics, as music and as poetry on the move. Through Ashon's vibrant textured prose we watch in awe as these young men seize on whatever the culture has to offer, sampling leftovers and legacies, making themselves into ferocious artists" --Margo Jefferson, award-winning author of Negroland "Stylistically loaded, reckless, funny, naked, thorough, thoughtful, mysterious, devastating, unrelenting, and compassionate. One of the most rewarding pieces of hip hop criticism ever written."--Jeff Chang, author of We Gon' Be All Right: Notes on Race and Resegregation and Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation Will Ashon tells, in 36 interlinked "chambers", the story of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and how it changed the world. As unexpected and complex as the album itself, Chamber Music ranges from provocative essays to semi-comic skits, from deep scholarly analysis to satirical celebration, seeking to contextualize, reveal and honor this singular work of art. Chamber Music is an explosive and revelatory new way of writing about music and culture.
