Book Challenging Images

Download or read book Challenging Images written by Jo Dean and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is area and community regeneration enough to challenge the negative perceptions of a stigmatised housing estate? The authors of this report argue that, unless a housing estate's image problems are effectively challenged alongside regeneration, stigma will remain. This report is the first to look for solutions to estates' image problems as a means of ensuring that the improvements made by regeneration processes are concrete and long-lasting.Challenging images examines three housing estates which have long-established problem reputations but which have experienced substantial regeneration. The report provides detailed evidence of the perceptions of estate residents, residents of neighbouring areas and local stakeholders such as regeneration partners, employers, journalists and estate agents. It:discusses the impact of stigma on life chances;identifies key actors responsible for building negative estate images;suggests key actors for positively managing images;provides good practice suggestions for 'image management';looks at implications for policy and practice;argues that image management should be a central component of regeneration packages.Challenging images will be of key interest to those involved in regeneration partnerships, managers of housing in low demand, and students and researchers of urban and housing policy.

Book Challenging Images of Women in the Media

Download or read book Challenging Images of Women in the Media written by Theresa Carilli and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-07-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging Images of Women and the Media: Reinventing Women’s Lives, edited by Theresa Carilli and Jane Campbell, collects fifteen articles addressing the status of women through an examination of depictions of women in the media. This in-depth study shows how mixed messages from the media muddle attempts at breaking the “glass screen,” causing women to constantly question their role in global culture. With cake ads followed by diet commercials, the media’s depiction of women is both confusing and contradictory. While more and more women have begun to contribute to the media as respected anchors, talk show hosts, and commentators, these portrayals are often counteracted by music videos and reality television shows such as Jersey Shore. This collection seeks to analyze these depictions and their effects on women and culture. The contributors to this anthology hail from such diverse locations as Japan, Australia, Pakistan, India, China, Bulgaria, and the United States. With this global focus, Challenging Images of Women in the Media scrutinizes issues of race, ethnicity, class, and sexuality through a study of gendered media portrayals. By challenging the status quo of media images, the contributors to this essential volume invite a dialogue about women’s lives.

Book A Multimodal Approach to Challenging Gender Stereotypes in Children s Picture Books

Download or read book A Multimodal Approach to Challenging Gender Stereotypes in Children s Picture Books written by A. Jesús Moya-Guijarro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection offers a thorough treatment of the ways in which the verbal and visual semiotic modes interrelate toward promoting gender equality and social inclusion in children’s picture books. Drawing on cutting-edge theoretical work in multimodality, including multimodal cognitive linguistics, multimodal discourse analysis, and visual social semiotics, the book expands on descriptive-oriented studies to offer a more linguistically driven perspective on children’s picture books. The volume explores the choice afforded to and the lexico-semantic and discursive strategies employed by writers and illustrators in conveying representational, interpersonal, and textual meanings in the verbal and non-verbal components in these narratives in order to challenge gender stereotypes and promote the social inclusion of same-sex parent families. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in multimodality, discourse analysis, social semiotics, and children’s literature. Chapters 1 & 8 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on interactive segmentation techniques, which have been extensively studied in recent decades. Interactive segmentation emphasizes clear extraction of objects of interest, whose locations are roughly indicated by human interactions based on high level perception. This book will first introduce classic graph-cut segmentation algorithms and then discuss state-of-the-art techniques, including graph matching methods, region merging and label propagation, clustering methods, and segmentation methods based on edge detection. A comparative analysis of these methods will be provided with quantitative and qualitative performance evaluation, which will be illustrated using natural and synthetic images. Also, extensive statistical performance comparisons will be made. Pros and cons of these interactive segmentation methods will be pointed out, and their applications will be discussed. There have been only a few surveys on interactive segmentation techniques, and those surveys do not cover recent state-of-the art techniques. By providing comprehensive up-to-date survey on the fast developing topic and the performance evaluation, this book can help readers learn interactive segmentation techniques quickly and thoroughly.
