This is especially tme in multina tional organizations created though mergers and acquisitions. In such organiza tions, individual subunits are not only subjected to the isomorphic pulls of their respective local environments (Westney 1993) but are often characterized also by different organizational cultures, administrative heritage and work practices. As a long stream of research on mergers and acquisition testifies, achieving syner gies through knowledge sharing in such circumstances is associated with formid able obstac1es. The theoretical basis of much current literature on knowledge and knowledge transfer can be traced from Nelson and Winter's (1982) seminal work, over Win ter's (1987) conjecture regarding the trade-offs between tacitness and codifica tion of knowledge to a celebrated series of artic1es by Kogut and Zander (1992, 1993, 1996). It conceptualizes the multinational firm as a social community that specializes in the creation and transfer of knowledge. 'Higher order organiza tional routines' and the 'identifications' of their employees place firms in the privileged position to be able to intemally transfer knowledge, especially in its more 'tacit' varieties, more rapidly and cheaply than this can be accomplished through third-party licensing or through involuntary imitation. In this approach, the existence of firms is explained without invocation of 'opportunism' or other transaction cost considerations - a fact that has no doubt contributed to its wide spread appeal.

According to the research that has already been conducted in this field, multinational teams can indeed be one way of transferring knowledge between dispersed multinational units in order to leverage its competitive advantage of sharing knowledge. This is mostly done by means of interaction between different team members who share knowledge in continuously communicating and working together, therefore benefiting from explicit and tacit knowledge of team members. Teams can create synergetic effects and not only share knowledge within a team, but also create new knowledge. This dissertation recognizes multinational teams as a suitable way of transferring knowledge. However, due to reasons of language barriers, lack of motivation and costs, a multinational team should not be used as the only means of transferring knowledge through multinational organizations.

The strategic position of MNC units in the organizational network and the nature of knowledge - for example, marketing know-how and technology know-how - require differentiated management approaches. To apply these ideas to practice, several perspectives on international knowledge flows, from control issues to cultural barriers, are discussed and integrated into a unifying framework. The large-scale empirical study is based on a sample of leading MNCs, and results show which managerial mechanisms have to be implemented to increase the benefit from knowledge transfers as well as employees' satisfaction with knowledge management.

The complexity associated with the organization of multinational corporations (MNCs) and the information asymmetry in foreign locations pose particular challenges to knowledge flow. Yet, effective transfer of knowledge is critical for the survival and performance of MNCs. Based on an extensive review of the literature, we present a comprehensive framework to understand the difficulties in the smooth flow of knowledge in MNCs. We argue that knowledge flow in MNCs is affected by the nature and characteristics of the knowledge as well as the interaction between individual actor-specific, firm-specific and country-specific factors. We discuss these factors in the backdrop of two factors that affect the knowledge flows - MNC strategy and the knowledge transfer context. We present our theoretical model and discuss the implications for advancing research in this domain.

Research has attributed difficulties in doing so largely to problems and difficulties in the process of knowledge transfer, and has recently pinpointed the essential role of implementing knowledge from other parts of the world, and the learning required to do so. An ethos of knowledge transfer, implementation and learning are needed for international business success.Chinese multinational companies experience numerous challenges at internationalising, and are culturally ill-disposed to such an ethos. This study will employ longitudinal ethnographic research to identify if and how they reconcile this conundrum, to advance understanding concerning the link between knowledge and learning and international business development.The knowledge source, the knowledge transfer process, and the knowledge recipient have been categorised as the three principle elements of a knowledge-management system (Wiig, 1995). As knowledge retention and distribution have always been the concern of organisations and their managers, sophisticated techniques and systems have been designed for managing the knowledge source and knowledge transfer (Davenport and Prusak, 1998; Wiig, 1995). One of the main streams of research in international business is concerned with knowledge-management within multinational corporations, especially knowledge transfer between parent firm and subsidiaries. For these firms, and for research on them, cross-border knowledge transfer and implementation have become hot topics.For most multinational companies, transferring knowledge is important for self-improvement and development, both in home and in host markets. Knowledge transfer is a circular process; MNCs gather knowledge from business partners, and then apply it back to doing business with these or other business partners. In this process, knowledge application (which can be called as 'implementation') plays an essential role; it determines the effectiveness of knowledge transfer, without which, MNCs cannot develop and possibly cannot survive in foreign markets. Thus, the implementation of transferred knowledge should be a focus of attention; especially for companies dealing with multinational markets.Many firms in the People's Republic of China have, in recent years, grown so rapidly that they are now beginning to become MNCs. However, their complex culture background, their different political environment and their firms' comparatively undeveloped management skills and technologies bring huge challenges for their internationalisation. These aspects also represent obstacles for foreign companies who are trying to do business with Chinese MNCs.These concerns lead to a comprehensive investigation of the factors, and the management techniques that influence the implementation of international business knowledge transfer within the Chinese-Western context.
