Book excerpt: In this article we analyze the impact of B-physics and Higgs physics at LEP on standard and non-standard Higgs bosons searches at the Tevatron and the LHC, within the framework of minimal flavor violating supersymmetric models. The B-physics constraints we consider come from the experimental measurements of the rare B-decays b → s? and B{sub u} → ?? and the experimental limit on the B{sub s} → ?+?− branching ratio. We show that these constraints are severe for large values of the trilinear soft breaking parameter A{sub t}, rendering the non-standard Higgs searches at hadron colliders less promising. On the contrary these bounds are relaxed for small values of A{sub t} and large values of the Higgsino mass parameter ?, enhancing the prospects for the direct detection of non-standard Higgs bosons at both colliders. We also consider the available ATLAS and CMS projected sensitivities in the standard model Higgs search channels, and we discuss the LHC's ability in probing the whole MSSM parameter space. In addition we also consider the expected Tevatron collider sensitivities in the standard model Higgs h → b{bar b} channel to show that it may be able to find 3 ? evidence in the B-physics allowed regions for small or moderate values of the stop mixing parameter.

In the following lectures important experimental issues relevant for Higgs boson searches (trigger, measurements of leptons, jets and missing transverse energy) are presented. Book excerpt: This thesis has been conducted in the context of one of the utmost important searches at current hadron colliders, that is the search for the Higgs boson, the remnant of the electroweak symmetry breaking. We wish to study the phenomenology of the Higgs boson in both the Standard Model (SM) framework and its minimal Supersymmetric extension (MSSM). After a review of the Standard Model in a first part and of the key reasons and ingredients for the supersymmetry in general and the MSSM in particular in a third part, we will present the calculation of the inclusive production cross sections of the Higgs boson in the main channels at the two current hadron colliders that are the Fermilab Tevatron collider and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), starting by the SM case in the second part and presenting the MSSM results, where we have five Higgs bosons and focusing on the two main production channels that are the gluon gluon fusion and the bottom quarks fusion, in the fourth part. The main output of this calculation is the extensive study of the various theoretical uncertainties that affect the predictions: the scale uncertainties which probe our ignorance of the higher-order terms in a fixed order perturbative calculation, the parton distribution functions (PDF) uncertainties and its related uncertainties from the value of the strong coupling constant, and the uncertainties coming from the use of an effective field theory to simplify the hard calculation. We then move on to the study of the Higgs decay branching ratios which are also affected by diverse uncertainties. We will present the combination of the production cross sections and decay branching fractions in some specific cases which will show interesting consequences on the total theoretical uncertainties. We move on to present the results confronted to experiments and show that the theoretical uncertainties have a significant impact on the inferred limits either in the SM search for the Higgs boson or on the MSSM parameter space, including some assessments about SM backgrounds to the Higgs production and how they are affected by theoretical uncertainties. One significant result will also come out of the MSSM analysis and open a novel strategy search for the Standard Higgs boson at the LHC. We finally present in the last part some preliminary results of this study in the case of exclusive production which is of utmost interest for the experimentalists.

Book excerpt: In this article, we explore the interplay between searches for supersymmetric particles and Higgs bosons at hadron colliders (the Tevatron and the LHC) and direct dark matter searches (such as CDMS, ZEPLIN, XENON, EDELWEISS, CRESST, WARP and others). We focus on collider searches for heavy MSSM Higgs bosons (A, H, H{sup {+-}}) and how the prospects for these searches are impacted by direct dark matter limits and vice versa. We find that the prospects of these two experimental programs are highly interrelated. A positive detection of A, H or H{sup {+-}} at the Tevatron would dramatically enhance the prospects for a near future direct discovery of neutralino dark matter. Similarly, a positive direct detection of neutralino dark matter would enhance the prospects of discovering heavy MSSM Higgs bosons at the Tevatron or the LHC. Combining the information obtained from both types of experimental searches will enable us to learn more about the nature of supersymmetry.

Book excerpt: Even if the Standard Model of particle physics has proven to be one of the most accurate descriptions of nature ever devised by human beings, some limitations point towards the idea that it is a low energy effective theory. Supersymmetry is a newer theoretical framework, thought to overcome the problems found with the Standard Model while preserving all its predictive power. The model with a minimal supersymmetric content in the Higgs sector is know as Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model, MSSM. The analysis presented in this dissertation focuses on the search for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons at the Tevatron, a hadron collider operating at Fermilab, USA. This accelerator provides proton-antiproton collisions with a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. CDF is one of the detectors built to record and analyze the products of the collisions provided by the Tevatron. The sensitivity achieved by this analysis is rooted on the robustness of the description of the different backgrounds and the boldness of the method for tau reconstruction. The results presented are currently the most stringent limits in the MSSM parameter space.

Book excerpt: The discovery of a new particle with mass of about 125 GeV was a real triumph of run-1 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). To date, the analysis of the full data collected clearly shows that its properties match very well those expected for the Higgs boson in the Standard Model (SM). However, the SM itself leaves many serious questions unsolved and cannot completely describe all the observed phenomena. Hence, it must be only a component of a more complete theory. Theories that go beyond the SM typically require an extended Higgs sector. Although stringently constrained by the LHC run-1 data, a non-minimal Higgs sector is theoretically very attractive and, if confirmed, would shine light on the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). Followed by a historical review of the birth of the Higgs boson, this volume supplies a brief introduction to SM Higgs boson physics and topical issues on Higgs searches at the LHC. An updated overview of the property analysis for the newly-discovered 125 GeV Higgs and other beyond-the-SM (BSM) Higgs bosons will be presented. We will also discuss its implications for various BSM Higgs models without and within the framework of supersymmetry (SUSY). The two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) is a very simple and appealing framework for such considerations. Either of the two CP-even Higgs bosons in the Type I and II 2HDM is able to provide a consistent description of the LHC Higgs signal. I will illustrate its status after LHC run-1 analysis and present the prediction for higher precision at the run-2. Given the very SM-like nature of this discovered particle, one often considers the decoupling limit in which the lightest one is the SM-like Higgs boson discovered at the LHC while others are very heavy. However, such a SM-like scalar Higgs boson can also be obtained in the alignment limit without the masses of other Higgs being large. In particular, I will address the seemingly extreme case in which there is a (pseudoscalar) Higgs light enough so that the SM-like state would have a rare decay mode. Finally, the results achieved in the case of alignment will be compared to those present in the decoupling limit and the prospects for searching for non-SM Higgs bosons at future experiments will be discussed in detail.In the framework of supersymmetry, the next-to-minimal supersymmetric SM (NMSSM) that has been widely studied is a most promising possibility because it allows for less fine-tuning. Following an analysis of the theoretical structure of this model, we first assessed the extent to which various semi-constrained NMSSM (scNMSSM) scenarios with one of the CP-even Higgs bosons, h1 (the lightest) or h2 (the second lightest), are able to describe the LHC signal as a SM-like Higgs. Meanwhile, if the h1 and h2 are approximately degenerate in mass then an enhancement of the di-photon signal is very possible, although a SM-like level is also easily achieved. To experimentally probe the possibility of degeneracy, we developed diagnostic tools that could discriminate whether or not there are two (or more) Higgs bosons versus just one contributing to the LHC signals at 125 GeV. In addition, we considered the case where the h1 provides a consistent description of the small LEP excess at 98 GeV whereas the h2 possesses the primary features of the LHC Higgs-like signals at 125 GeV. Beyond the SM, the Higgs sector and dark matter (DM) sector may be intimately connected. With protection by an extra discrete symmetry, a certain non-SM scalar boson (Higgs partner) could be a possible DM candidate. As typical examples, we consider the lightest neutralino supersymmetric DM and the Higgs-portal scalar DM in the singlet extension of the 2HDM (2HDMS) together with presenting a decent description of the models. In both cases, implications for DM physics are discussed in various scenarios. Intriguingly, violating the isospin symmetry in the DM interaction with nucleons could result in a large suppression of the DM-nucleon cross section, approaching a level that is hardly reachable by many ambitious projects for DM direct detection. Given this dramatic change in the analysis of DM direct detection, I include an in-depth examination of this possibility in the generic Higgs-portal DM model.
