But they have their own challenges that retard their financial solution to their members and the economical contribution to a country. In Kalu Woreda, the development of SACCOs is low due to the existence of different challenges. The research design is cross sectional descriptive research. Primary and secondary sources of data were used. Stratified systematic random probability sampling methods were employed to select the sample respondents. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistical methods & simple index model analysis methods. Lack of knowledge and capacity of management committees and poor members’ participation, lack of transparency and accountability, lack of appropriate support from cooperative promoters and NGOs, and non awareness of the existing opportunities by the members are the main findings. Providing member driven services, providing appropriate training, education, and information to all stakeholders, and recommending Micro Financial Institutions to give up their unfair competition with cooperatives are the possible recommendations. With this broad question in mind, we characterize alternative formation of RFCs and their implications in improving the access of rural households to financial services, including savings, credit, and insurance services. We find that some features of RFCs have varying implications for delivering various financial services. The size of RFCs is found to have a nonlinear relationship with the various financial services RFCs provide. We also show that compositional heterogeneity among members, including diversity in wealth, is associated with higher access to credit services, while this has little implication on households’ savings behavior. Similarly, social cohesion among members is strongly associated with higher access to financial services. These empirical descriptions suggest that the optimal size and composition of RFCs may vary across the domains of financial services they are designed to facilitate. This evidence provides suggestive insights on how to ensure financial inclusion among smallholders, a pressing agenda and priority of policy makers in developing countries, including Ethiopia. The results also provide some insights into rural microfinance operations which are striving to satisfy members’ demand for financial services.

Book excerpt: This paper aims to examine rural saving and credit cooperatives financial performance challenges and prospects in facilitating rural financing in East and West Gojjam Zones using a WOCCU model based on data collected and analyzed from five years audited financial reports and 242 subjects. The researcher conclude the Financial health checkup in most rural saving and credit cooperatives in the study areas for the study periods did not indicate healthy performance as compared to WOCCUs standards of excellence and able to perform in line with the standard only on limited indicators even with problem of sustainability. In addition, in saving mobilization and loan services RUSACCOs are efficient on certain salient features of savers most value. Though RUSACCOs are facing many challenges such as difficulty on meeting members loan demand, poor infrastructural facilities, problem of loan able funds, lack of technical assistance from promotion officers, low attention from government bureau, lack of professionals in the sector and limitation on education and training for employed workers at union level and elected committees at primary level.

The study was undertaken with the objective to characterize milk marketing system and to forward appropriate intervention in the area. The data was collected based on group discussion with key informants and then using pre-tested questionnaire administered to randomly selecting milk producer from randomly selected rural Kebeles. Two market places were selected purposively. The result indicates that all milk animals are indigenous cattle, camel and goats. There were generally two types of milk outlets identified in the district. These are traditional milk associations or groups and individual sellers. The traditional milk producer association group is locally called Faraqa Annanni. From a total of 94 households that sold milk during the study, only 22 (23 %) households were involved in the milk seller groups.

Updated estimates show the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to prevailing levels from almost a decade ago. Although progress continues to be made in reducing child stunting, over 22 percent of children under five years of age are still affected. Other forms of malnutrition are also growing: adult obesity continues to increase in countries irrespective of their income levels, and many countries are coping with multiple forms of malnutrition at the same time – overweight and obesity, as well as anaemia in women, and child stunting and wasting.

Further powers were devolved in 2001 through the District Level Decentralization Program and Urban Management Profram. This volume brings together studies by the Forum for Social Studies and others, with the aim of identifying knowledge gaps for further research and to generate debate on the issues in Ethiopia. The study is in two parts: a literature review seeking to document existing studies and highlight research gaps; and field work which involved a rapid assessment of eight weredas and two kifle ketemas in Addis Ababa. The other three studies are synopses of master theses submitted to the Institute of Regional and Local Development Studies of Addis Ababa University.

The women, who do much of the work but are not recognized for it, often have to work even harder to meet ever-increasing quality requirements. But they see few of the benefits. How to change this? This book explains how development organizations and private entrepreneurs have found ways to improve the position of women in value chains - especially small scale women farmers and primary processors. It outlines five broad strategies for doing this: (1) working with women on typical "women's products" such as shea, poultry and dairy; (2) opening up opportunities for women to work on what are traditionally "men's commodities" or in men's domains; (3) supporting women and men in organizing for change by building capacity, organization, sensitization and access to finance; (4) using standards and certification to promote gender equity, and (5) promoting gender-responsible business. The book draws on dozens of cases from all over the world, covering a wide range of crops and livestock products. These include traditional subsistence products (such as rice), small-scale cash items (honey, vegetables) as well as export commodities (artichokes, coffee) and biofuels (jatropha). What happens to these systems in early life can have long-term consequences and can even carry over to the next generation. The impact of economic crises on human development is similarly complex and heterogeneous. Some families and some young people display astonishing resilience – either by being comparatively unscathed by crises or by their ability to recover quickly and healthily. Other families and individuals may be unable to prevent exposure, unable to protect themselves, or may not have the same capacity to adapt positively when exposed to a crisis, with potentially serious long-term consequences for healthy development. Human development lies at the intersections of neurology and sociology, genetics and psychology, biology and economics; and this volume approaches the study of shocks and human development from a variety of disciplinary perspectives: economics, sociology, anthropology, and social and developmental psychology. This volume describes the impact of aggregate shocks on human development, and the subtle and intricate settings and pathways through which individuals can be affected. Depending on the timing, duration, transmission mechanisms, and context, the consequences for children's physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development may be costly and irreversible. Fortunately, although children suffer in adversity, they can also benefit positively when exposed to enriching environments. We need to develop and implement effective interventions to prevent the worst consequences of exposure to shocks, and to assist families and young people to recover. This volume explores what we know about protecting young people from lasting harm and promoting healthy development through a crisis. This volume is intended for policymakers, civil society, and others engaged in promoting and protecting human development and in designing and implementing safety nets during crisis. This is a novel approach as it incorporates the experiences from such diverse disciplines to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex interactions that define human development.

Book excerpt: The literature on commercial transformation of smallholders makes little distinction between market orientation (production decision based on market signals) and market participation (sale of output). This paper analyzes the determinants of market orientation and market participation in Ethiopia separately and examines if market orientation translates into market participation. Empirical results show that market orientation translates strongly into market participation. The key implication of this study is that policy, technological, organizational and institutional interventions aimed at promoting commercial transformation of subsistence agriculture should follow two-pronged approach: improving market orientation of smallholders at production level, and facilitating market entry and participation of households in output and input markets. Focusing on either may not be as effective in achieving the transformation.
