Book The International Political Economy of Intellectual Property Rights

Download or read book The International Political Economy of Intellectual Property Rights written by Meir Perez Pugatch and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book is a substantial contribution to the discussion on trade-related intellectual property rights. It provides a clear, step-by-step, in-depth analysis of the TRIPS agreement, particularly as it relates to the European pharmaceutical industry. Politics, law and economics are judiciously blended. Meir Pugatch's work should be read not just by academic experts and students in the field, but also by trade policy and IPR practitioners interested in an accessible, policy-relevant treatment of the issues at hand.' - Razeen Sally, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK This book investigates the realm of intellectual property rights (IPRs) within the context of international political economy. In particular, it examines the extent to which powerful interest groups, such as pharmaceutical multinational companies, influence the political dynamism underlying the field of IPRs. Meir Perez Pugatch argues that a pure economic approach does not provide a sufficient or satisfactory explanation for the creation of intellectual property rights, most notably patents. The author instead suggests that a dynamic approach, based on the international political economy of interest groups and systemic outcomes, provides a better starting point for explaining how the international intellectual property agenda is determined.

Book World Trade Organization

Download or read book World Trade Organization written by A. M. Babkina and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If ever there existed a benign-sounding organisation, it is surely the World Trade Organisation. The WTO is the successor to GATT. According to the WTO itself, its mission is "dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, the legal ground-rules for international commerce and for trade policy. The agreements have three main objectives: to help trade flow as freely as possible; to achieve further liberalisation gradually through negotiation; and to set up an impartial means of settling disputes". This book seeks to illuminate some key issues related to the WTO as well as present a detailed bibliography for future reference.

No book on the WTO has had this wide a scope before or covered the legal framework, economic and political issues, current and would-be countries and a outlook to the future like these three volumes do. 3000 pages, 80 chapters in 3 volumes cover a very interdiscplinary field that touches upon law, economics and politics.

Book Challenges and Opportunities of WTO on Services in Selected ESCWA Member Countries

Download or read book Challenges and Opportunities of WTO on Services in Selected ESCWA Member Countries written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multilateral WTO General Agreement on Tade in Services (GATS), the first set of legally-enforceable rules ever negotiates to cover international trade in services, is now a reality. This Agreement comprises the institutional framework for the many services internationally trades among countries and is intended to insure that each WTO member treat the services and service suppliers of other members no less favourably than its own. One of the most important service secotors covered in the Agreement is tourism, with its crucial role in the economic growth of many countries. This study deals with such services and their role in the economy, with specific reference to tourism and the implications of the legal framework of the GATS and its commitments regarding that sector. An analysis of the tourism secctor, both in its regional sector and international dimensions, is supported with case studies of two ESCWA member countries, Egypt and Jordan, which have made significant progress in this area.
