Book Challenge and Response in Internal Conflict Volume 2 the Experience in Europe and the Middle East

Download or read book Challenge and Response in Internal Conflict Volume 2 the Experience in Europe and the Middle East written by D. N. Condit and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study is one of three volumes in a series entitled Challenge and Response in Internal Conflict. The series contains descriptive and analytical accounts covering a total of 57 cases of insurgency and counterinsurgency occurring in the 20th century. The three volumes are individually entitled The Experience in Asia (19 cases), The Experience in Europe and the Middle East (18 cases), and The Experience in Africa and Latin America (20 cases). The purpose of the project was to enlarge the body of knowledge about insurgency and especially counterinsurgency by empirical study of actual historical cases. From a sample of about 150 cases, 57 were selected according to criteria governing time, definition, occurrence of military operations, analogy, and feasibility. Persons of academic and professional background were then selected to study individual cases according to a standardized methodology (described in the Technical Appendix). The individual studies were written in a format covering background, insurgency, counterinsurgency, and outcome and conclusions, followed by notes and bibliographic material. The studies have been grouped geographically in three volumes to form casebooks on the subject of internal conflict. In addition, the cases now published plus some further materials collected during their preparation form a data bank for the further analysis of insurgency and counterinsurgency.

Book The Economic Impact of Conflicts and the Refugee Crisis in the Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book The Economic Impact of Conflicts and the Refugee Crisis in the Middle East and North Africa written by Mr.Bjoern Rother and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) has experienced more frequent and severe conflicts than in any other region of the world, exacting a devastating human toll. The region now faces unprecedented challenges, including the emergence of violent non-state actors, significant destruction, and a refugee crisis bigger than any since World War II. This paper raises awareness of the economic costs of conflicts on the countries directly involved and on their neighbors. It argues that appropriate macroeconomic policies can help mitigate the impact of conflicts in the short term, and that fostering higher and more inclusive growth can help address some of the root causes of conflicts over the long term. The paper also highlights the crucial role of external partners, including the IMF, in helping MENA countries tackle these challenges.

Book The State of Research on Internal War

Download or read book The State of Research on Internal War written by Jesse Orlansky and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper evaluates current knowledge about the nature of internal war and the types of research being undertaken to increase this knowledge. There were 380 conflicts in the world in the 19 years following World War 2, involving 81 percent of the 123 independent countries in the world. During this period, there were from 13 to 30 new conflicts each year and an average of 13.6 on-going conflicts each month, but there was no formal declaration of war in any conflict. The crucial conceptual issues about internal war are still in the pretheoretical stage. New research on internal war should examine the interaction of the antagonists on a time-line basis, utilize reliable attitudinal data, and examine what happens after hostilities are over, since the real impact of a revolution seems to occur after rather than during the period of active combat. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1944, following the withdrawal of the German occupation troops, Athens became the scence of bitter fighting between the British-sponsored government of George Papandreaou and the Greek Left. This upheaal and its suppression set the stage for the full-scale civil war of 1946-1949 and for much that has plagued that troubled nation ever since. John O. Iatrides examines the immediate causes of the "Second Round," as this tragedy came to be called, and analyzes the Allies' reactions to it. His conclusions are new and important. The real causes are to be found in the economic, social, political, and psychological exhaustion of Greece, inherited from the past and aggravated by the war and occupation. Traditionally this crisis has been regarded as a reckless bid by the Greek Communist Party to seize power and join Moscow's clients in the Balkans. This view served as a principal theme of the Truman Doctrine and a powerful stimulus for the Cold War. It is now clear that the Soviet Union chose to remain uninvolved. Knowing this, Churchill intervened in a highhanded attempt to restore the unwanted monarchy and suppress the entire republican Left, despite American disapproval of his actions.
