Book Treatment Options in Urological Cancer

Download or read book Treatment Options in Urological Cancer written by Jonathan Waxman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer forms a large part of urological practice. Prostate cancer is the most significant and is the second most common cause of male cancer deaths with some 300,000 cases in the USA annually. Cancer of the bladder is also common. While treatment has been primarily surgical, recent years have seen an explosion of new drug therapies for urological cancers. All urologists, whether in training or in practice, need an up-to-date survey of the literature and key findings in this important and controversial field. This book takes each organ in turn (prostate, kidney, bladder, testis and penis) and tackles the controversies head-on by inviting chapters on various (often rival) treatments for each disease. Each section is then concluded by a commentary from the editor which draws together the various strands, outlines the principal areas of consensus and disagreement. Jonathan Waxman is an oncologist who specialises in urological tumours and has developed new treatments for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer and for terminal care, which are now part of standard practice. He founded the Prostate Cancer Charity and helped establish an all-party parliamentary group to improve cancer treatment and research throughout the UK.

Book A Multidisciplinary Analysis of Controversies in the Management of Prostate Cancer

Download or read book A Multidisciplinary Analysis of Controversies in the Management of Prostate Cancer written by Donald S. Coffey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings emanate from the Second Prouts Neck Conference on prostate cancer held on October 17-19, 1986, the theme of which was treat ment, with focus on current issues and future research that is needed to answer critical questions related to optimal management of the various stages of prostate cancer. The objective was to reveal the most crucial problems impeding progress and to crystallize the combined multidisci plinary input generated by the conference into focused concepts or recommendations for presentation to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) , with the ultimate intent of targeting research to address the priority issues identified. In organizing the workshop, every effort was made to maintain a multidisciplinary balance among nationally renowned authorities on prostate cancer. Thus, leading surgeons, radiation and medical onco logists and biostatisticians were in equal presence. While there were spirited exchanges with careful scrutiny and critique of all data pre sented, there was a common belief that the challenge of prostate cancer would be best approached in this multidisciplinary Organ Systems-oriented fashion. During the course of the conference, it became apparent to all present that major nomenclature and procedural barriers have made it generally difficult, and frequently impossible, to compare results of clinical research.

Download or read book Bladder Cancer written by E.J. Zingg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer of the bladder has a bad reputation: the combination of urinary problems and malignancy gives just cause for continuing concern. Not only is this common cancer a burden to the patient but, because of the need for regular follow-up, it creates a large workload on the urological services. It might be imagined that the bladder would give early warning signals of disease, and indeed it may do so; yet it can also be hesitant to reveal its severity. Thus there are many problems that create challenges in the diagnosis and management. Prevention is still the first goal of an oncologist, with early detection of early disease being the next best option. Early bladder cancer is amenable to several therapeutic approaches, but we have still to determine the best approach. The management of more advanced invasive bladder cancer all too often leads to disappointment, and we remain uncertain as to the optimum approach-surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or some combination of these. Although none of these problems may be fully answered either now or in the near future, many people are working towards their solution, and the rate of progress needs to be documented from time to time. This volume aims to set the standard for the present state of our knowledge on bladder cancer. The editors, Professor Ernst Zingg and Mr'. Michael Wallace, have gathered together the best opinions on a wide range of topics relating to bladder cancer.
