Book Treatise on the Heathen Superstitions that Today Live Among the Indians Native to this New Spain 1629

Download or read book Treatise on the Heathen Superstitions that Today Live Among the Indians Native to this New Spain 1629 written by Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Treatise of Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón is one of the most important surviving documents of early colonial Mexico. It was written in 1629 as an aid to Roman Catholic churchmen in their efforts to root out the vestiges of pre-Columbian Aztec religious beliefs and practices. For the student of Aztec religion and culture is a valuable source of information. Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón was born in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico, in the latter part of the sixteenth century. He attended the University of Mexico and later took holy orders. Sometime after he was assigned to the parish of Atenango, he began writing the Treatise for his fellow priests and church superiors to use as a guide in suppressing native "heresy." With great care and attention to detail Ruiz de Alarcón collected and recorded Aztec religious practices and incantations that had survived a century of Spanish domination (sometimes in his zeal extracting information from his informants through force and guile). He wrote down the incantations in Nahuatl and translated them into Spanish for his readers. He recorded rites for such everyday activities as woodcutting, traveling, hunting, fishing, farming, harvesting, fortune telling, lovemaking, and the curing of many diseases, from toothache to scorpion stings. Although Ruiz de Alarcón was scornful of native medical practices, we know now that in many aspects of medicine the Aztec curers were far ahead of their European counterparts.

Book The Medicine Men of the Apache

Download or read book The Medicine Men of the Apache written by John G. Bourke and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who, and what are the medicine-men (or medicine-women), of the American Indians? What powers do they possess in time of peace or war? How is this power obtained, how renewed, how exercised? What is the character of the remedies employed? Are they pharmaceutical, as we employ the term, or are they the superstitious efforts of empirics and charlatans, seeking to deceive and to misguide by pretended consultations with spiritual powers and by reliance upon mysterious and occult influences? Such a discussion will be attempted in this book, which will be restricted to a description of the personality of the medicine-men, the regalia worn, and the powers possessed and claimed. To go farther, and enter into a treatment of the religious ideas, the superstitions, omens, and prayers of these spiritual leaders, would be to open a road without end.

Download or read book Hiking to History written by Robert Julyan and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 13,000 years of human habitation, New Mexico offers a wealth of historic sites located on vast tracts of land well off the beaten path. As author Robert Julyan observes, not much history has been made from a speeding car, and locations that have to be reached on foot are almost always less altered by parking lots, visitor centers, roadways, or traffic noise. Written for both outdoor enthusiasts and vicarious travelers, Hiking to History describes the historical significance behind these publically accessible sites and includes GPS coordinates to enable readers to find each place. Ranging from the state’s principal Civil War battlefield at Glorieta to the dirt road where a broken wagon wheel led two young artists to settle in Taos in 1898, the scenes provide an up-close experience of the state’s remarkable past.
