Book Twist of Fate

  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Twist of Fate written by Brad Hastings and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Ancient Greece to contemporary times, themes of fate and destiny have served as a central worldview for many. These compelling ideas have guided those in battle, and provided influence and inspirations for politicians, philosophers, and artists. Despite a pervasive concern with fate, we find that an explicit discussion of this construct is absent from psychological theory. Twist of Fate reconciles contemporary psychological research with the ancient and frequently held position of fatalism that was common in that era. The Greek mythological history of the "Moirae" (the triad of goddesses known as the "Fates") offers a unique perspective on human beings by illustrating how fate and destiny influence a variety of behaviors such as drug addiction, spirituality, sexual activity, aggression, and other applied psychological topics. An analysis of the "Moirae" integrates diverse ideas from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, psychoanalysis, and Nietzsche's philosophy into a fatalistic view of the human personality. The analysis raises the issues of possibilities for personal change, the role of clinical interventions, and what role freedom actually plays in the human experience. Twist of Fate also accounts for recent developments in personality theory and research by shedding new light on findings from evolutionary psychology, narrative theory, and trait psychology. The result is an integrative personality theory that takes the reader from Nietzsche to neuroscience.

Book excerpt: The continent of Avonia is vast and wild, its dark history steeped in conquest and genocide. The Allied Avonian Kingdom has established a tenuous peace across the region through open commerce and free trade, but the militaristic Reignland threatens to supplant the Kingdom's feudalistic republicanism with its own brand of tyrannical authority. All the while the Thousand Kings of the Southern Reaches lie in hungry wait, anxious to devour the victor's scraps. While the great powers of Avonia busy themselves squabbling over riches, an ancient evil rises in the east. DarHel, a boy of the reclusive Kharar, is born cursed, bringing ruin to his people. Reviled and cast out, DarHel must embark upon a surreal spiritual journey to purify his soul, lest he succumb to the sentient Darkness stirring within him. A bloody antihero's journey through a squalid dystopia; a psychedelic exploration of pantheistic cosmology; a cautionary fable of self-fulfilling prophecy and the horrors of abuse: The Chains of Fate wears many cloaks, but beneath them all is a tale of the extraordinary faculty of love, and hate, to shape the world around us.

Book The Consolation of Philosophy

Download or read book The Consolation of Philosophy written by Boethius and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1999-01-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boethius composed the De Consolatione Philosophiae in the sixth century AD whilst awaiting death under torture, condemned on a charge of treason which he protested was manifestly unjust. Though a convinced Christian, in detailing the true end of life which is the soul's knowledge of God, he consoled himself not with Christian precepts but with the tenets of Greek philosophy. This work dominated the intellectual world of the Middle Ages; writers as diverse as Thomas Aquinas, Jean de Meun, and Dante were inspired by it. In England it was rendered in to Old English by Alfred the Great, into Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer, and later Queen Elizabeth I made her own translation. The circumstances of composition, the heroic demeanour of the author, and the 'Menippean' texture of part prose, part verse have combined to exercise a fascination over students of philosophy and literature ever since. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Astrology through History

Download or read book Astrology through History written by William E. Burns and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alphabetically arranged entries cover the history of astrology from ancient Mesopotamia to the 21st century. In addition to surveying the Western tradition, the book explores Islamic, Indian, East Asian, and Mesoamerican astrology. The field of astrology is growing rapidly, as historians recognize its centrality to the intellectual life of the past and sociologists and anthropologists treat its importance in a number of modern cultures. Despite the historical and cultural significance of the subject, most reference works on astrology focus on instructional techniques and are written by astrologers with little or no interest in the history of the topic. This book instead offers an objective treatment of astrology across world history from ancient Mesopotamia to the present. The book provides alphabetically arranged entries by expert contributors writing on such topics as horoscopes, court astrologers, Renaissance astrology, and comets. While it considers the Western tradition, it also treats Islamic, Indian, East Asian, and Mesoamerican astrology. In doing so, it explores the role of astrology in shaping science, literature, religion, art, and other defining cultural traditions. Sidebars offer excerpts from various historical texts, while entries provide suggestions for further reading.

Book Summa Theologiae Prima Pars

Download or read book Summa Theologiae Prima Pars written by Thomas Aquinas and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023-06-23 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to three questions on love according to St. Thomas Aquinas (Summa Theologiae I-II, qq. 26-28). These three questions reflect on the nature of love (q. 26), the causes of love (q. 27), and the effects of love (q. 28). It is thus an introduction to the entire phenomenon of love, both as a bodily passion and an act of the will. The purpose is to present the Thomistic and broadly scholastic account of human and divine love from a philosophical and theological perspective. It aims to be a theological and philosophical study of the topic, useful both for a graduate/professional audience, as part of an undergraduate or graduate course, and perhaps for the educated reader. The thesis of the book is that, contrary to contemporary conceptions, not all loves are created equal. Some loves perfect us and some loves corrupt us. The worth of a love depends on its object and end. St. Thomas thus presents an objective and teleological account of human and divine love that is of philosophical and theological interest. The method is broadly exegetical, presenting a careful reading of the text and supplying the philosophical and theological background which the text of Aquinas assumes. The scope of the work is limited to three questions (ST I-II, qq. 26-28). References to interpretative disputes of Aquinas and references to further resources in the secondary literature will be mostly limited to the footnotes, making the body of the text accessible to more readers.

Book Understanding the Medieval Meditative Ascent

Download or read book Understanding the Medieval Meditative Ascent written by Robert McMahon and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confessions, Proslogion, and Consolation of philosophy, like the Divine comedy, all enact Platonist accents. [These accents] generate implied meditative meanings, which scholars have explored only in part. Each work calls us to read forward, on its journey to understanding, and to meditate backwards on the stages of the ascent and the relations between them. Augustine, Anselm, Boethius, and Dante wrote for readers experienced in meditating on the Bible, adept at exploring relations between far distant passages They designed these works as spiritual exercises for the same kind of reading and meditations. This book uses literary analysis to discover new philosophical meaning in these works. --Book jacket.

Book Dreaming at the Edge of Reason

Download or read book Dreaming at the Edge of Reason written by Vishnu Aiyappan and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book mostly deals with the poignancy of dreams and how transient they are. The poems also deal with the way the world appears to the eyes of the author describing the emotions and states of mind that he thinks in. In many ways this collection of poetry is more like a lyrical commentary of the author's take on what it takes to live in todays modern world of fast pace and fleeting dreams.
