Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Poetic and magical ... Astur's language is meticulous and vivid."—Asymptote A literary crime novel about family conflict in the Spanish countryside: breathtaking, tragic, sensuous and magical. Marcelino lives alone on his parents’ farm, set deep in the beautiful but impoverished countryside of northern Spain. It’s the place where he grew up, the place where he doted on his baby brother, the place where he protected his mother from their father’s drunken rages. But when Marcelino’s brother tricks him out of his house and land, a moment of anger sparks a chain of events that can’t be reversed. Marcelino flees to the wild peaks of rural Asturias, becoming a cult hero as he evades the authorities. Into this, author Manuel Astur interweaves family tales and fables about the sun and the moon, about death and love, and offers glimpses into the lives of other villagers and the history of their community. Astur’s poetic language and seamless blend of lyricism with the grotesque renders this book a treasure for the reader. Of Saints and Miracles is a sensuous portrayal of an outcast’s struggle to survive in a chaotic world of both tragedy and magical splendor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus turned water into wine, Mohammad split the moon into two, and Buddha walked and spoke immediately upon birth. According to recent statistics, even in the present age of advanced science and technology, most people believe in miracles. In fact, newspapers and television regularly report alleged miracles, such as recoveries from incurable diseases, extremely unlikely coincidences, and religious signs and messages on unexpected objects. In this book the award-winning author and philosopher Yujin Nagasawa addresses some of our most fundamental questions concerning miracles. What exactly is a miracle? What types of miracles are believed in the world's great religions? What do recent scientific findings tell us about miracles? Can we rationally believe that miracles have really taken place? Can there be acts that are more religiously significant than miracles? Drawing on a vast variety of fascinating examples from across the major religions, Nagasawa discusses the lively debate on miracles that ranges from reported miracles in ancient scriptures in the East and West to cutting-edge scientific research on belief formation. Throughout, he drives us to ask ourselves if and how we can still believe in in miracles in the twenty-first century. Download or read book The Course in Miracles Experiment written by Pam Grout and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ACIM, the Fun Version! A real-world rewrite of the lessons of A Course in Miracles by the #1 New York Times best-selling author of E-Squared. A Course in Miracles is profound, deeply moving, and as boring to read as a bookshelf assembly manual. Ask for a show of hands at any self-help gathering, and 95 percent will happily admit to owning the dense blue book that's a famous resource for spiritual transformation. Ask the obvious follow-up, "How many have actually read it?" and all but a smattering of hands go down. It's as if everyone wants the miracles, the forgiveness, and the mind shifts, but they just can't bear its ponderous heaviness. Pam Grout to the rescue! Her new book is for all those still struggling with the Course. Grout offers a modern-day rewrite of the 365-lesson workbook-the text at the heart of the Course. Unlike the original, it's user-friendly, accessible and easy for everyone to understand. In daily lessons with titles like "The Home Depot of Spiritual Practices" and "Transcending the Chatty Asshat in My Head," Grout drills down to the Course's essential message and meaning, grounding it in the context of everyday life in a way that's bound to stick. The lessons here blend eternal truths with pop culture and personal stories that are laugh-out-loud funny and deeply soul-stirring, often at the same time. You won't be tempted to use this Course in Miracles as a doorstop. You'll want to use it, every day, to change your life.

Book Enterprise as a Carrier of Culture

Download or read book Enterprise as a Carrier of Culture written by Hirochika Nakamaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book expands anthropological studies of business enterprise to include comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. A number of books on business anthropology have been published, but most of them are written by anthropologists alone. By contrast, this book engages interdisciplinary studies, e.g., not only by anthropologists but also management scholars and other social scientists. It is the second volume of studies forwarding anthropological approaches to business administration, Keiei Jinruigaku. This volume focusses on the cultural dimensions of enterprise. Here enterprise is viewed as a medium carrying culture, rather than solely an entity of production and management, as is typical in mainstream studies. The approach is based on Tadao Umesao’s definition of culture as a projection of instruments/devices and institutions into the mental/spiritual dimensions of life. Therefore, in our view production and management are among the projections of the cultural aspects of enterprise. This perspective, we believe, constitutes a new frontier in the study of business administration. This book consists of three parts, the first being “religiosity and spirituality”, the second “exhibitions, performance and inducement,” and the third “history and story.” In Part I, Quaker Codes, ex-votos, and spiritual leadership are discussed in relation to management and behavior, and miracles and pilgrimage. Part II describes exhibitions justifying nuclear power industry within power plants in both Japan and England, the exhibition by English families of their porcelain collections, and the performance skills of orchestral maestros. All of these examples indicate that, through the use of narratives and myths, exhibits and performances overtly and covertly induce visitors or audiences to certain viewpoints and emotions. Part III offers examples of histories and stories of enterprise articulated through the branding and consumption of industrial products, and their display in enterprise museums where the essence of culture and heritage is cherished and emphasized, by and for the wider community and the enterprise itself. Conjoined as an interdisciplinary team of Western and Japanese researchers, we apply an anthropological approach to the cultural history of enterprise in both Britain and Japan.
