Book Chain of Title

Download or read book Chain of Title written by David Dayen and published by New Press, The. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the depths of the Great Recession, a cancer nurse, a car dealership worker, and an insurance fraud specialist helped uncover the largest consumer crime in American history—a scandal that implicated dozens of major executives on Wall Street. They called it foreclosure fraud: millions of families were kicked out of their homes based on false evidence by mortgage companies that had no legal right to foreclose. Lisa Epstein, Michael Redman, and Lynn Szymoniak did not work in government or law enforcement. They had no history of anticorporate activism. Instead they were all foreclosure victims, and while struggling with their shame and isolation they committed a revolutionary act: closely reading their mortgage documents, discovering the deceit behind them, and building a movement to expose it. Fiscal Times columnist David Dayen recounts how these ordinary Floridians challenged the most powerful institutions in America armed only with the truth—and for a brief moment they brought the corrupt financial industry to its knees.

Book Multilateral Banks and the Development Process

Download or read book Multilateral Banks and the Development Process written by Vinod Thomas and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. When the links in the chain represent development projects, if individual projects fail to achieve their purpose, the development program’s effectiveness is compromised. When the chain’s links are strong and well-connected, the results are improved for the sector, country, and region. The role of multilateral banks is crucial; they inform the impact of development operations and support policymakers in decision making. This volume emphasizes that some crucial links in development tend to be systematically overlooked. In these matters, preoccupation with the immediate exigencies seems to come at the expense of attention to enduring problems—at a great cost to society. Development practitioners should apply policies that have produced results over time, ensuring that the links in the chain are strong, but too often they overlook those links—because of myopia, complexity, tradition, or special interests. This book will help policy makers and practitioners focus on the links that measure progress, apply lessons, and matter for lasting results.

Book Financial Stability without Central Banks

Download or read book Financial Stability without Central Banks written by George Selgin and published by London Publishing Partnership. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Selgin is one of the world's foremost monetary historians. In this book, based on the 2016 Hayek Memorial Lecture, he shows how a system of private banks without a central bank can bring about financial stability through self-regulation. If one bank stretches credit too far, it will be reined in by the others before the system as a whole gets out of control. The banks have a strong incentive to ensure an orderly resolution if a particular bank is facing insolvency or illiquidity. Selgin draws on evidence from the era of 'free banking' in Scotland and Canada. These arrangements enjoyed greater financial stability, with fewer banking crises, than the English system with its central bank and the US model with its faulty government regulation. The creation of the Federal Reserve appears to have increased the frequency of financial crises. The book also includes commentaries by Kevin Dowd and Mathieu Bédard. Dowd asks whether free-banking systems should be underpinned by a gold standard, which he regards as a tried-and-tested institution at the heart of their success. Bédard challenges the assumption that the banking sector is inherently unstable and therefore requires state intervention. He argues that increases in government control have made the banking system more prone to crisis.

Book The Transformation of Commercial Banking in the United States 1956 1991

Download or read book The Transformation of Commercial Banking in the United States 1956 1991 written by James E. Mason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1997-12-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. A profound transformation of the commercial banking industry has occurred in recent years. The consolidation of local, independent banks into multi-bank holding company structures has altered the landscape of commercial banking. The Transformation of Commercial Banking in the United States, 1956-1991 focuses on the effect of restrictive state branch banking laws on the consolidation of commercial banks in the United States. The central thesis of this study is that much of the change in the structure of commercial banking can be explained by the variation in state branch banking laws.
