Book Biochemical Thermodynamics

Download or read book Biochemical Thermodynamics written by Robert A. Alberty and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-31 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navigate the complexities of biochemical thermodynamics with Mathematica(r) Chemical reactions are studied under the constraints of constant temperature and constant pressure; biochemical reactions are studied under the additional constraints of pH and, perhaps, pMg or free concentrations of other metal ions. As more intensive variables are specified, more thermodynamic properties of a system are defined, and the equations that represent thermodynamic properties as a function of independent variables become more complicated. This sequel to Robert Alberty's popular Thermodynamics of Biochemical Reactions describes how researchers will find Mathematica(r) a simple and elegant tool, which makes it possible to perform complex calculations that would previously have been impractical. Biochemical Thermodynamics: Applications of Mathematica(r) provides a comprehensive and rigorous treatment of biochemical thermodynamics using Mathematica(r) to practically resolve thermodynamic issues. Topics covered include: * Thermodynamics of the dissociation of weak acids * Apparent equilibrium constants * Biochemical reactions at specified temperatures and various pHs * Uses of matrices in biochemical thermodynamics * Oxidoreductase, transferase, hydrolase, and lyase reactions * Reactions at 298.15K * Thermodynamics of the binding of ligands by proteins * Calorimetry of biochemical reactions Because Mathematica(r) allows the intermingling of text and calculations, this book has been written in Mathematica(r) and includes a CD-ROM containing the entire book along with macros that help scientists and engineers solve their particular problems.

Book Microbiology of the Avian Egg

Download or read book Microbiology of the Avian Egg written by R.G. Board and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a marked and most unfortunate dichotomy in the studies of avian eggs and hence in the application of new findings in commerce. Thus over the past twenty years there has been a renewed interest in the contribu tions of various parts of an egg to embryo development. This is best illustrated by those studies that have explored the diffusion of respiratory gases across the shell and at long last have provided a fundamental definition of a previously nebulous term, porosity. The activity in this general area has led in the past four years to the publication of three major books dealing with many aspects of egg structure, function and embryogenesis. When brows ing over these books, two developments are evident. First, the advantages that are to be gained by comparative studies. Thus it is now common to see within a single book articles concerned with the eggs of a range of avian species as well as those of reptiles. Second, it is evident that zoologists and physiologists as well as those employed in large breeding firms are all contributing to an improvement of our knowledge of the egg's role in the breeding biology of birds. Comparative studies are a very uncommon feature of studies concerned with bacterial infection of eggs.

Download or read book The Compensations of Plunder written by Justin M. Jacobs and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-07-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1790s until World War I, Western museums filled their shelves with art and antiquities from around the world. These objects are now widely regarded as stolen from their countries of origin, and demands for their repatriation grow louder by the day. In The Compensations of Plunder, Justin M. Jacobs brings to light the historical context of the exodus of cultural treasures from northwestern China. Based on a close analysis of previously neglected archives in English, French, and Chinese, Jacobs finds that many local elites in China acquiesced to the removal of art and antiquities abroad, understanding their trade as currency for a cosmopolitan elite. In the decades after the 1911 Revolution, however, these antiquities went from being “diplomatic capital” to disputed icons of the emerging nation-state. A new generation of Chinese scholars began to criminalize the prior activities of archaeologists, erasing all memory of the pragmatic barter relationship that once existed in China. Recovering the voices of those local officials, scholars, and laborers who shaped the global trade in antiquities, The Compensations of Plunder brings historical grounding to a highly contentious topic in modern Chinese history and informs heated debates over cultural restitution throughout the world.

Book The Butterfly Effect

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emily Mathews
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013-08
  • ISBN : 9781491704998
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Butterfly Effect written by Emily Mathews and published by . This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wise and provocative book, Emily Mathews grounds her intelligent policy philosophy in common sense, which is particularly refreshing as our political structure grows increasingly dysfunctional. At a time in our nation's history when the only focus should be the shared goal of productive progress, the author shows why we are in a political standoff that stifles all desire for compromise, represses productive political conversation and prevents our country from being the very best it can be. Ms. Mathews' innovative thought process collides with her talent for entertaining storytelling. The result is a book you cannot put down. Born and raised in Jasper, Texas, Emily returned to her childhood home in 2004 and was a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, a highly anticipated campaign that was ultimately a casualty of the state legislature's bitter redistricting fiasco. During the campaign, she witnessed firsthand the unraveling of our political system, but also became convinced that it is possible to repair shattered hopes, restore honorable motivation and renew the American spirit. Carefully researched and deeply affecting, The Butterfly Effect responds to America's political impasse with a resounding call for a radically transforming approach. At the heart of the book are recommendations on how to move beyond the status quo and build the foundation for a new political vision - one that looks outside the traditional corridors of power and encourages every American to take a more proactive attitude to their government. She writes, The reason true change eludes us is that we always attempt it within a glaringly broken system. The focus is always on changing elements of the system instead of changing the entire system itself. The most beautiful thing about living in America is that we have the freedom and power to create a better future for ourselves without waiting for a piece of elusive legislation to pass. We don't need anyone's permission to define our destiny. The time has come for each of us to honestly question our commitment to the future of this nation. Deep down, do we really want to make the necessary changes or are we satisfied with accepting our current political circus as some sort of perverse entertainment? Will our legacy be something we are proud of or will we forever be known as the former superpower that recklessly relinquished our prominence because we lacked the will to protect it? The greatest privilege of being American is the inherent responsibility we all feel to continually assess our government, our leaders, and our political and moral direction. Without that privilege America would be lost. With it, anything is possible."
