Book excerpt: "As part of the AMAPPS (Atlantic Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species) project, the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) and Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) of NOAA Fisheries Service conducted line-transect aerial and shipboard abundance surveys to estimate the abundance of cetaceans and sea turtles in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean during Jun - Aug 2011. This manuscript focuses on abundance estimates of cetaceans detected during the NEFSC surveys that covered waters from North Carolina to the lower Bay of Fundy, from the shore to the Gulf Stream, which is about 370 km (200 nmi) offshore. In a study area of about 463,000 km2, over 9100 km of track lines were covered. To estimate abundance the two-independent team data-collection method and the mark-recapture distance sampling (MRDS) and multiple covariate distance sampling (MCDS) analysis methods were used. Overall, approximately 342,000 cetaceans of 18 species were estimated to be present in the study area. Species specific abundance estimates for the surveyed area range from 300 - 400 sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis) and humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) each, to over 40,000 animals per species of harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), Atlantic white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus acutus), striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Book excerpt: The US Fleet Forces Command, Department of the Navy, contracted the consulting firm Geo-Marine, Inc. (GMI) to generate technical reports that provide marine mammal and sea turtle density estimates for Navy operating areas. Some of the needed density estimates are for areas off the northeast US coast, an area that has been surveyed by marine mammal abundance surveys conducted by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center. GMI requested my aid in preparing summer density estimates for the northeast operating areas (NE OPAREA) using data collected from 1998, 1999, 2002, and 2004. The Gulf of Maine Central and Offshore NE OPAREAs had the highest numbers of cetaceans, although the NE OPAREAs with the highest densities (abundance divided by area) were the Gulf of Maine North and Scotian NE OPAREAs (both in Canadian waters). Within US waters, the stratum with the highest density was the Gulf of Maine Central, followed by the Shelf Central, Shelf West, and Georges Bank Central strata. The strata with the lowest densities and lowest species diversity were the Mid-Atlantic and Georges Bank West strata. The 2004 estimates appear to be more representative of a springtime distribution or the transition between spring and summer distributions, while the 2002 and earlier estimates appear to be more representative of mid summer distributions.

Book excerpt: The Gulf of Mexico (GMx) is a subtropical marginal sea of the western North Atlantic Ocean with a diverse cetacean community. Ship-based, line-transect abundance surveys were conducted in oceanic waters (>200 m deep) of the northern GMx within U.S. waters (380,432 km2) during summer 2003 and spring 2004. Data from these surveys were pooled and minimum abundance estimates were based on 10,933 km of effort and 433 sightings of at least 17 species. The most commonly sighted species (number of groups) were pantropical spotted dolphin, Stenella attenuata (115); sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus (85); dwarf/pygmy sperm whale, Kogia sima/breviceps (27); Risso’s dolphin, Grampus griseus (26); and bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus (26). The most abundant species (number of individuals; coefficient of variation) were S. attenuata (34,067; 0.18); Clymene dolphin, S. clymene (6,575; 0.36); T. truncatus (3,708; 0.42); and striped dolphin, S. coeruleoalba (3,325; 0.48). The only large whales sighted were P. macrocephalus (1,665; 0.20) and Bryde’s whale, Balaenoptera edeni (15; 1.98). Abundances for other species or genera ranged from 57 to 2,283 animals. Cetaceans were sighted throughout the oceanic northern GMx, and whereas many species were widely distributed, some had more regional distributions. Book excerpt: In this book, the editors present a view of the socioecology of primates and cetaceans in a comparative perspective to elucidate the social evolution of highly intellectual mammals in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Despite obvious differences in morphology and eco-physiology, there are many cases of comparable, sometimes strikingly similar patterns of sociobehavioral complexity. A number of long-term field studies have accumulated a substantial amount of data on the life history of various taxa, foraging ecology, social and sexual relationships, demography, and various patterns of behavior: from dynamic fission–fusion to long-term stable societies; from male-bonded to bisexually bonded to matrilineal groups. Primatologists and cetologists have come together to provide four evolutionary themes: (1) social complexity and behavioral plasticity, (2) life history strategies and social evolution, (3) the interface between behavior, demography, and conservation, and (4) selected topics in comparative behavior. These comparisons of taxa that are evolutionarily distant but live in comparable complex sociocognitive environments boost our appreciation of their sophisticated mammalian societies and can advance our understanding of the ecological factors that have shaped their social evolution. This knowledge also facilitates a better understanding of the day-to-day challenges these animals face in the human-dominated world and may improve the capacity and effectiveness of our conservation efforts.
