Book excerpt: The need for hot gas cleanup in the power, advanced coal conversion, process and incineration industries is well documented and extensive development is being undertaken to develop and demonstrate suitable filtration technologies. In general, process conditions include (a) oxidizing or reducing atmospheres, (b) temperatures to 1800°F, (c) pressures to 300 psi, and (d) potentially corrosive components in the gas stream. The most developed technologies entail the use of candle or tube filters, which suffer from fragility, lack of oxidation/corrosion resistance, and high cost. The ceramic membrane filter described below offers the potential to eliminate these limitations.

Book excerpt: In gasification systems, the ash and char that is suspended in the syngas stream must be removed prior to the gas stream's introduction to other downstream air pollution control systems (e.g., hydrogen sulfide removal). The char, once captured, can be reinjected into the gasification reactors to increase the overall system efficiency. If the ash and char are not captured before the other downstream equipment, these solids can foul process piping or columns and cause downtime for the entire system. This paper describes, in general, a development program between Ceramem Separations and Foster Wheeler for a high temperature ceramic filtration system to be sold by their partnership, CeraFilter L.P. In addition, detailed test results of ceramic filters operating at conditions approaching those of high temperature combustors are discussed. The successful development of this hot gas filtration system based upon the Ceramem ceramic-membrane-coated, monolithic filter will help address the critical challenges of particulate removal under the severe conditions imposed by advanced fossil energy power systems.

Book excerpt: The primary goal is to demonstrate the performance of a new ceramic filter in removing particulate matter from hot gas streams produced in advanced coal conversion processes. The specific objectives are threefold: (1) Development of full size ceramic filters suitable for hot gas filtration; (2) Demonstration of ceramic filters in long term (ca. 1000 hrs) field trials; and (3) Development of full-scale hot gas filter system designs and costs. To date, field tests of the ceramic filter for particulate removal have been conducted at seven sites on a variety of gas streams and under a variety of test conditions. In general, the following performance characteristics have been observed: 1. Filtration face velocity (equivalent to an ''air to cloth ratio'') for flue gas tests is comparable to that for pulse jet bags operating at the same pressure drop. In hot gas tests, flow-pressure drop characteristics have been observed to be comparable to those for other ceramic filters. 2. Complete regeneration by a simple backpulse technique is achieved; i.e., no increase in clean filter resistance over repetitive cycles is observed. 3. No plugging of the filter passageways by badly caking particulates is observed. 4. Essentially complete particulate removal, including submicron particulate matter, is achieved.

Book excerpt: The need for more efficient systems for generating electric power from coal has led to a number of new technological developments, including such processes as pressurized fluidized-bed combustion (PFBC) and integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) systems. To achieve maximum efficiency, a common and critical requirement for these technologies is a method for removing suspended particulate matter from the gas stream at high temperatures (above 1000 F) and high pressures (greater than 10 bar). The US Department of Energy's Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) is pursuing the development of such hot gas cleanup methods through an extensive program of fundamental and pilot studies in cooperation with utilities, supporting industries, and other research organizations. As a part of this program, Southern Research Institute (SRI) is carrying out a series of studies using a high-temperature sidestream device for performing long-duration tests on small specimens (patches) of filter materials on a process gas stream from an atmospheric-pressure fluidized-bed combuster. SRI developed an apparatus and a test plan to accomplish three of METC's objectives: (1) to determine the effects on ceramic filters of long-term filtration of particle-laden flue gases at high temperatures, (2) to compare the filtration performance of several kinds of filters, and (3) to simulate the Plant Tidd ash loading on filters so that results from these tests could be used to help select filters for use at the Tidd 10 MW pilot-scale facility. Preliminary results are discussed.

A high dust collection efficiency is essential for many industrial operations either to avoid the possibility of a serious health hazard or to recover valuable solid materials which would otherwise be lost. There is renewed interest in using fibrous and fluidized-bed filters to remove dust from the hot combustion gases from a pressurized fluidized-bed combustor. Such gases may be used to drive a turbine system for power generation. The literature available on the use of fixed-bed and fluidized-bed filters is reviewed to assess our present ability to design efficient and reliable filtration units for hot, compressed gases. The basic mechanisms for solids collection from gas streams are: gravity settling, direct interception, inertial impaction, Brownian diffusion, and thermal separation. The guiding principles of these mechanisms and the characteristic parameters which control the collection of particles are summarized. Calculation procedures are enumerated for estimating total or overall collection efficiency of a single filter unit (cylinder or sphere) and that of a filter consisting of an assembly of individual filter units. Most investigations were at room temperature and 1-atm pressure, and the probable effect of these two variables (temperature and pressure) on the solids collection efficiency has been analyzed theoretically. The use of fluidized beds in series and containing bed material which can be electrically charged appears to be promising for flue-gas cleaning. It is possible to develop an efficient filter that will match a specific requirement for a given system. Much theoretical and experimental research and development work will be needed for successful understanding and operation of efficient filter systems.

Book excerpt: A patented dynamic mechanical filter developed by InnovaTech was previously shown to remove fine particulate matter from industrial process gas streams at ambient temperatures and pressures. An all-metal, high-temperature version of this novel media-less filter was fabricated under this Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with DOE/NETL-Morgantown for hot gas testing of the device. The technology is entirely different in both concept and design from conventional vortex separators, cyclones, or porous media filters. This new filtration concept is capable of separating heavy loading of fine particles without blinding, fouling or bridging, and would require minimal operational costs over its anticipated multi-year service life. The all-metal filter design eliminates thermal stress cracking and premature failure prevalent in conventional porous ceramic filters. In contrast, conventional porous media filters (i.e., ceramic cross-flow or candles) easily foul, require periodic cleaning (typically backpulsing), frequent replacement and subsequent disposal.

Book excerpt: The present invention relates generally to the removal of solid particulate material from high-temperature gas streams, and more particularly the removal of such particulate material by employing a barrier filter formed of a carbon-carbon composite provided by a porous carbon fiber substrate with open interstitial regions between adjacently disposed carbon fibers selectively restricted by carbon integrally attached to the carbon fibers of the substrate. In a typical utilization of a particulate-bearing hot gas stream, the particulate loading of the gas stream after cleaning is normally less than about 50 ppm and with essentially no particulates larger than about 10 microns. This carbon-carbon filter for removing particulate material of a particle size larger than a preselected particle size from a gas stream at a temperature greater than about 800 F, is produced by the steps which comprise: providing a substrate of carbonaceous fibers with pore-forming open interstitial regions between adjacently disposed fibers; and, sufficiently filling these open interstitial regions with carbon integrally attached to and supported by the fibers for providing the interstitial regions with throughgoing passage-ways of a pore size sufficient to provide for the passage of the gas stream while preventing the passage of particulate material larger than a preselected particle size.
