Book Central Asia Security and Strategic Imperatives

Download or read book Central Asia Security and Strategic Imperatives written by Tabassum Firdous and published by Gyan Publishing House. This book was released on 2002 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study offers an assessment of security concerns in Central Asia after the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991. It deals with the transition period for the five Central Asian States from the communist system to a democratic and pluralistic one. Essentially, the focus of the writer is on bilateral, multilateral and international commitments of these States to ensure peace and security in the region. The withdrawal of nuclear warheads from Kazakhstan, collective security formula, bilateral agreements and the role of the big powers all make an interesting study. The author has discussed these concerns in the context of the stance of neighbouring States vis-a-vis Central Asia. Economic interests also figure wherever necessary. This work is highly useful to those who would like to concentrate on any aspect of history in Central Asia and adjoining regions in the post-Soviet period.

Book Central Asian Security

Download or read book Central Asian Security written by Roy Allison and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first comprehensive scholarly analysis of the strategic reconfiguration of Central Asia as Russia has become more disengaged from the nations in the region and as these nations have developed new relations to the south, east, and west. The international implications are enormous because of the rich energy sources—oil and natural gas—located in the Caspian Sea area. The authors assess a variety of internal security policy challenges confronting these states—for example, the potential for conflict arising from such factors as a mixed ethnic population, resource scarcity, particularly in relation to water management, and an Islamic revival. They also examine the security policy content of relations between the Central Asian states and regional and international powers—specifically the stakes, interests, and policies of Russia, China, Iran, Turkey, and the United States. These internal challenges and the evolution of relations with external powers may result in new cooperative relationships, but they may also lead to destabilizing rivalry and interstate enmity in Central Asia. It is important to identify new patterns of relevance for future security cooperation in the region, but the potential for a new security system or for new institutions to manage security in the region remains uncertain. These issues are explored by a team of prominent specialists from Western Europe, the United States, Russia and China.

Book Central Asia s Security Issues and Implications for U S Interests

Download or read book Central Asia s Security Issues and Implications for U S Interests written by Jim Nichol and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-12-24 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Central Asian states (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) face common security challenges from crime, corruption, terrorism, and faltering commitments to economic and democratic reforms. However, cooperation among them remains halting, so security in the region is likely in the near term to vary by country. Kyrgyzstan's and Tajikistan's futures are most clouded by ethnic and territorial tensions, and corruption in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan could spoil benefits from the development of their ample energy resources. Authoritarianism and poverty in Uzbekistan could contribute to a succession crisis. On the other hand, Kyrgyzstan's beleaguered civil society might eventually help the relatively small nation safeguard its independence. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan might become regional powers able to champion policy solutions to common Central Asian problems and to resist undue influence from more powerful outside powers, because of their large territories and populations and energy and other resources.

Book U S Interests in Central Asia

Download or read book U S Interests in Central Asia written by Olga Oliker and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The republics of Central Asia, which received comparatively little attention from the United States in their first ten years of independence, suddenly increased in value when the United States deployed forces and set up bases of operation in the region in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In that context, the U.S. government stepped up its cooperation programs with the host countries. Although the short-term needs of Operation Enduring Freedom have seemed clear, long-term U.S. interests in the region require careful consideration and analysis. This document identifies the implications for the U.S. Air Force of the trends in the region and of U.S. and other nations' interests in Central Asia. The authors conclude that the U.S. military should have a relatively minor, but still important, role in U.S. security policy toward the area. An effective strategy for future U.S. military engagement in Central Asia would have three main components: maintenance of a 'semi-warm' basing infrastructure; a carefully chosen program of military-to-military interactions; and encouraging basic interoperability between local militaries and the West". Book Regional Security and the Future of Central Asia

Download or read book Regional Security and the Future of Central Asia written by Hooman Peimani and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1998-06-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breakup of the USSR created a Central Asian security complex or sphere of influence consisting of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, this security complex has tended to distance itself from a Russian-centered approach to foreign relations, has rejected involvement with a Turkey-oriented sphere of influence, and has shifted toward an Iran-oriented security complex. A major reason for these developments has been the activities of the three rival powers—Iran, Turkey, and Russia. As Peimani explains, these states have strong long-term interests in the region; earlier rivalries, which were dormant under Soviet rule, have reawakened since the breakup of the USSR. While Russia attempts to reincorporate Central Asia into its security complex, Iran and Turkey seek to include it in their spheres of influence. The rivalry among these states will largely determine the future development of the region and the individual states.
