This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997 in the wake of the fall of the Soviet Union and its agricultural policies, these editors presented a series of ten related articles on the transition to post-communist, more privatised agricultural policies, each specialising in a specific region of Central and Eastern Europe. Resulting from a research network, this volume features a range of contributors, including those preparing PhDs, former governmental advisors and specialists in agricultural economics, food policy and statistics. The chapters cover Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Eastern Germany, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Solvenia, and the Former Soviet Union, along with a comparative analysis. Book excerpt: The former USSR could become self-sufficient in food, but in the medium term will probably remain a net agricultural importer - if it can persuade exporters to extend credit. But Central Eastern European agricultural exports are likely to expand. Central Eastern Europe could become a tougher, more aggressive player in agriculture, principally in the markets for more demanding food products - especially pork, poultry, and fruits and vegetables.

Book Innovation in Family Farming in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Download or read book Innovation in Family Farming in Eastern Europe and Central Asia written by Andrew F. Fieldsend and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family farms are part of the solution for ensuring long-term global food security, rural poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. Hence, promoting innovation in family farming is becoming a priority for politicians and policy makers. However, while family farms everywhere are facing major challenges in terms of succession planning, access to finance, land, markets and education, bargaining power, administrative burden and dealing with market volatility, farms in the (Central and Eastern) European and Central Asia (EECA) region have the additional challenges of dealing with the consequences of transition and learning to operate in a market economy. This paper, firstly, summarizes the current theoretical discourse about the potential of national Agricultural Innovation Systems (AIS) to contribute to sustainable agricultural development in EECA. It then, explores the following challenges: (a) the demand for transition towards inclusive, decentralized and pluralistic AISs; (b) the need for a broad involvement and participation of family farmers in knowledge sharing and innovation; (c) the role of producer organizations and, in particular, service cooperatives to promote innovation on family farms; and (d) the roles of public and private investment in agricultural R&D and extension and advisory services. Based on this analysis, a set of recommendations for fostering agricultural innovation for family farms, both for governments and other actors in the AIS, are then made.

Book Structural Change in the Farming Sectors in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Structural Change in the Farming Sectors in Central and Eastern Europe written by Csaba Csáki and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farm structures in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) today cover a whole spectrum of forms, which include small subsistence-oriented household plots, medium-sized commercial family farms, and large corporations. The agricultural sector in CEE definitely has not embraced the family farm as the dominant farming structure, thus confounding the original expectations of Western experts. On the other hand, agriculture did not collapse because of fragmentation and privatization, as predicted by conservative doomsayers. To address the concerns of the farming sector in CEE with relation to EU accession, a workshop was held in Warsaw, Poland in June 1999. This volume represents a selection of papers presented at this workshop. It examines the reforms and policy changes necessary in the food and agriculture sectors of the ten countries that have started the accession process for eventual membership in the European Union (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia). The papers are organized around the following three topics: • Evolving farm structures and competitiveness in agriculture; • Land laws and legal institutions for development of land markets and farm restructuring; and • Development of farm services for improved competitiveness. This volume will be of interest to agricultural policy makers and government officials in the candidate countries, EU officials, World Bank and FAO staff, development scholars, and all others interested in the process of agricultural reform in CEE.
