Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2000. Nothing definite is known about the banking system of the early days of Japan, but it is clear that the system played no important part in affairs, since the insignificance of trade and industry called for no extensive credit arrangements, and the spirit of contempt for business was general. This book looks at the banking system and traces the development of currency in Japan.

Excerpt: ...is absolutely essential to the best interests of the nation. That this may be brought about, the interests of both competing parties must be regarded. The Bank from its vantage-point is best capable of viewing both sides dispassionately and fairly, because it is at the same time the great instrumentality of governmental finance and the central organ of commerce. Thus the public weal is sure to be served. For this reason, in cases of emergency, Japan expects much from the Bank's management of the financial market. The Bankers' Magazine (N. Y.), April, 1899, p. 549. III. THE BANK AS THE ECONOMIC ORGAN. Our consideration has been, so far, devoted to the Bank's functions as the currency regulator and as the fiscal organ. There is, however, another function which is, in my opinion, of paramount importance from the very nature of its mission; viz., --its function as the economic organ of the nation. No sooner was political unity effected in Japan than the economic development of the nation as a whole became the chief object of state policy; for it was wisely recognized that the growth of commerce and industry is always fundamentally and indispensably essential to the existence of a nation. For the attainment of this purpose it was of the highest importance to establish banking facilities throughout the country. Furthermore, in order to bring this idea into perfect realization a strong centralized banking organ which should act in accordance with the economic policy of the nation was of the utmost importance. There was indeed a banking system in existence at the time when a central bank was first proposed. But it had proved to be an imperfect system from the view-point of the unified national interest. It is in this sense that the Bank of Japan..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japan, as in other parts of the world, banking plays an essential role in economic development. Studying key industries such as banking provides an important tool for genuinely understanding a country. This book gives that understanding of Japan for the first time in English. It thoroughly documents Japanese banking during a crucial one-hundred years--from the opening of her borders to the world in 1859 through two world wars--from which the Japanese economy finally emerged as one of the most powerful global forces.

Book Britain s Encounter with Meiji Japan 1868 1912

Download or read book Britain s Encounter with Meiji Japan 1868 1912 written by Olive Checkland and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-09-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Meiji Era, of 1868-1912, British influence in Japan was stronger than that of any other foreign power. Although role models were sought from Englishmen and Scotsmen, whether diplomats, engineers, educators or philosophers, the first priority for the Japanese was to achieve a transfer of industrial and technical skills. As important customers, who brought good profits to British industry, the Japanese were accommodated when they stipulated on awarding a contract that their own people should work in office, shipyard or factory. Much new research material discovered in Japan, England and Scotland has enabled the detailed examination of a relationship - with Britain as Senior and Japan as Junior partner - which lasted until 1914. It was on these foundations that Japan was able subsequently to build a great industrial nation.

Book The Future of Central Banking

Download or read book The Future of Central Banking written by Forrest Capie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains two major papers prepared for the Bank of England's Tercentenary Symposium in June 1994. The first, by Forrest Capie, Charles Goodhart and Norbert Schnadt, provides an authoritative account of the evolution of central banking. It traces the development of both the monetary and financial stability concerns of central banks, and includes individual sections on the evolution and constitutional positions of 31 central banks from around the world. The second paper, by Stanley Fischer, explores the major policy dilemmas now facing central bankers: the extent to which there is a short-term trade-off between inflation and growth; the choice of inflation targets; and the choice of operating procedures. Important contributions by leading central bankers from around the world, and the related Per Jacobsen lecture by Alexander Lamfalussy, are also included in the volume.

Book Japanese Monetary Policy

Download or read book Japanese Monetary Policy written by Kenneth J. Singleton and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has the Bank of Japan (BOJ) helped shape Japan's economic growth during the past two decades? This book comprehensively explores the relations between financial market liberalization and BOJ policies and examines the ways in which these policies promoted economic growth in the 1980s. The authors argue that the structure of Japan's financial markets, particularly restrictions on money-market transactions and the key role of commercial banks in financing corporate investments, allowed the BOJ to influence Japan's economic success. The first two chapters provide the most in-depth English-language discussion of the BOJ's operating procedures and policymaker's views about how BOJ actions affect the Japanese business cycle. Chapter three explores the impact of the BOJ's distinctive window guidance policy on corporate investment, while chapter four looks at how monetary policy affects the term structure of interest rates in Japan. The final two chapters examine the overall effect of monetary policy on real aggregate economic activity. This volume will prove invaluable not only to economists interested in the technical operating procedures of the BOJ, but also to those interested in the Japanese economy and in the operation and outcome of monetary reform in general.

Book The Sound of the Whistle

Download or read book The Sound of the Whistle written by Steven J. Ericson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thorough and detailed study of the development of the Japanese railroad industry during the Meiji period, Steven Ericson explores the economic role of government and the nature of state-business relations during Japan’s modern transformation. Ericson challenges the tendency of current scholarship to minimize the roles of the Japanese government and commercial banks in Meiji industrialization. By providing a fresh perspective on the “strong state/weak state” debate through a detailed analysis of the 1906–1907 railway nationalization, Ericson’s study sheds new light on the Meiji origins of modern Japanese industrial policy and politics, filling a major gap in the available literature on the Meiji political economy.
