Download or read book Brazil and Canada written by Rosana Barbosa and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a synthesis of the relationship between Brazil and Canada, or what comprises Canada today, with the objective of uncovering a neglected history. This book covers from the first known exchange of migrants between the two countries in 1828 to 1979 when a political openness in the Brazilian military dictatorship gave rise to a new chapter in the two countries’ relationship. As the first synthetic treatment of this relationship, this book not only aims to build on the limited historiography that exists, but also to open up new interpretive channels that can be further explored in the future. Recommended for scholars of Latin American studies, history, and international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This oral autobiography of two remarkable Cree women tells their life stories against a backdrop of government discrimination, First Nations activism, and the resurgence of First Nations communities. Nellie Carlson and Kathleen Steinhauer, who helped to organize the Indian Rights for Indian Women movement in western Canada in the 1960s, fought the Canadian government's interpretation of treaty and Aboriginal rights, the Indian Act, and the male power structure in their own communities in pursuit of equal rights for Aboriginal women and children. After decades of activism and court battles, First Nations women succeeded in changing these oppressive regulations, thus benefitting thousands of their descendants. Those interested in human rights, activism, history, and Native Studies will find that these personal stories, enriched by detailed notes and photographs, form a passionate record of an important, continuing struggle.
Download or read book Contested Ethnic Identity written by Chris Kostov and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century Macedonia had a very turbulent history. Essentially, the region became the apple of discord among the Balkan states. Ethnic identity formation among immigrants from Macedonia to Canada followed the political developments in the Balkans. This book illustrates the late emergence of an ethnic Macedonian community in Toronto and the roots of the clash between the Macedonian, Greek and Bulgarian ethnic communities. The author tackles a number of important questions: When did the Macedonian ethnic identity start in Canada? What was the ethnic affiliation of the first Macedonian immigrants' cultural organizations and churches in Toronto? Why did they use the Bulgarian language? Why do their first churches continue to be called Macedono-Bulgarian churches? Did all immigrants have one monolithic ethnic identity? The author relies upon three different types of literature: national identity development and theories; Balkan history; and ethnic studies of the Bulgarian, Macedonian and Greek settlements of Toronto. Oral interviews, conducted in Toronto by the author and other researchers, enhance this volume. The book sheds light on a much contested subject which continues to fuel debate from Skopje, Athens and Sofia to Toronto and Melbourne.--Publisher's description
