Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its tiny size and seeming marginality to world affairs, the Central American republic of Costa Rica has long been considered an important site for experimentation in cutting-edge environmental policy. From protected area management to ecotourism to payment for environmental services (PES) and beyond, for the past half-century the country has successfully positioned itself at the forefront of novel trends in environmental governance and sustainable development. Yet the increasingly urgent dilemma of how to achieve equitable economic development in a world of ecosystem decline and climate change presents new challenges, testing Costa Rica’s ability to remain a leader in innovative environmental governance. This book explores these challenges, how Costa Rica is responding to them, and the lessons this holds for current and future trends regarding environmental governance and sustainable development. It provides the first comprehensive assessment of successes and challenges as they play out in a variety of sectors, including agricultural development, biodiversity conservation, water management, resource extraction, and climate change policy. By framing Costa Rica as an “ecolaboratory,” the contributors in this volume examine the lessons learned and offer a path for the future of sustainable development research and policy in Central America and beyond.

Book Household and Class Relations

Download or read book Household and Class Relations written by Carmen Diana Deere and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Household and Class Relations offers an adept and multifaceted look at modern peasant family relation- ships. With the perspectives of an anthropologist and sociologist as well as those of an economist, Deere brings a fresh approach to the classic question: how do households continue to exist as units of production and reproduction in the face of their growing proletarianization and impoverishment? She draws upon rich life histories as well as archival and survey research to provide a regional history of the northern Peruvian highland province of Cajamarca since the turn of the century. Beginning with an examination of the hacienda system in the first four decades of this century, Household and Class Relations goes on to probe the development of agrarian capitalism in the postwar period and the peasant economy of the 1970s. With this background firmly in place, Household and Class Relations then distinguishes itself through attention to the interaction between class and gender. Deere argues that the subordination of women has had high costs for the well-being of rural households, exacerbating peasant poverty. Further, she shows how peasant households have adopted a strategy of participating in multiple income generating activities in order to survive. Breaking new ground, her study examines how gender relations interact with class relations to explain social differentiation among peasants. This is an exciting and stimulating study that will appeal to Latin Americanists, scholars of women's studies, and economists. Wide-ranging and incisive, it will garner attention from many quarters. Book Farms family farms farmland distribution and farm labour What do we know today

Download or read book Farms family farms farmland distribution and farm labour What do we know today written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A better and more complete understanding of family farms is urgently needed to guide policy makers’ efforts towards achieving a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This paper takes stock of the number of farms worldwide, and their distribution and that of farmland, on the basis of agricultural censuses and survey data. Thus, it shows that there are more than 608 million farms in the world. Rough estimates also indicate that more than 90 percent of these farms are family farms (by our definition) occupying around 70–80 percent of farmland and producing about 80 percent of the world’s food in value terms. We underscore the importance of not referring to family farms and small farms (i.e., those of less than 2 hectares) interchangeably: the latter account for 84 percent of all farms worldwide, but operate only around 12 percent of all agricultural land, and produce roughly 36 percent of the world’s food. The largest 1 percent of farms in the world operate more than 70 percent of the world’s farmland. The stark differences between family farms, in terms of size, their share in farmland distribution, and their patterns across income groups and regions, make clear the importance of properly defining different types of farms and distinguishing their differences when engaging in policy discourse and decision making towards the SDGs. The paper also considers evidence on labour and age provided by the censuses. There is a need to improve agricultural censuses if we want to deepen our understanding of farms.

Book Maya Saints and Souls in a Changing World

Download or read book Maya Saints and Souls in a Changing World written by John M. Watanabe and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maya of Santiago Chimaltenango have experienced increasingly rapid, even violent, integration into Guatemalan society in the last fifty years, yet they still distinguish themselves ethnically from Spanish-speaking Guatemalans and other Maya. Why this sense of ethnic identity persists—and also changes—over time is the focus of Maya Saints and Souls in a Changing World, a beautifully written ethnography of a Mam-speaking Maya town in the western highlands of Guatemala. John Watanabe uniquely explores how Chimaltecos themselves define their local distinctiveness. This approach uncovers significant continuities in lifeways and world view that might otherwise remain imperceptible to an outsider. Another important feature of the study is that it updates Charles Wagley's pioneering research in the community during the 1930s. Watanabe identifies both the external, historical factors that have prompted change in the community since Wagley's time and the people's responses to these changes.
