Book Historic Cemeteries of Long Beach

Download or read book Historic Cemeteries of Long Beach written by Gerrie Schipske and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of those who lived in the city by the sea begin long before the 1878 date on the oldest headstone found in the city. Long Beach was the site of ceremonies, and perhaps the burial grounds, for the Tongva tribe. Many of those who later settled the city are buried in one of the four known cemeteries, Municipal, Sunnyside, Forest Lawn Long Beach, and All Souls. Two of the cemeteries hold the graves of several hundred Union and Confederate Civil War veterans, one Medal of Honor recipient, and a slave who served in the 1st Colored Heavy Artillery Regiment. The histories of the Municipal and Sunnyside Cemeteries include the 1921 discovery of oil, which made national news as descendants of the deceased fought for the oil underneath the graves. The fight resulted in a second Sunnyside Cemetery that later became Forest Lawn Long Beach. The scene of oil derricks surrounding the cemeteries was so surreal that it caught the attention of Ansel Adams, whose photographs of Sunnyside Cemetery are included.

Book excerpt: Long Beach was one of the many Southern California cities that grew out of the railroad fare wars of the late 1880s. It was built by men and women who toiled to make it the great metropolis it is today. These are the tales of those who died or are buried in Long Beach. Some were illustrious in their time, others just common folk with interesting stories to tell. Politicians, city founders, visitors, influenza victims, Civil War veterans and accident victims are all discussed here, as well as the hospitals, doctors, undertakers and others who cared for the dead and dying. But what makes Long Beachs Sunnyside and Municipal cemeteries different from all others is the question of whether the bodies said to be there still remain. The cemetery wars of the 1920s erupted when oil was discovered on Signal Hill. Oil and other debris ran over the graves and the promised mausoleum that many had already paid for was cast aside in favor of black gold. People were angry, barricading themselves by the cemeteries gates to prevent oil rigs from getting to the mausoleum site. Slant drilling caused headstones and markers to sink into the ground, graves were covered by the run off debris from the oil fields above. Many bodies were moved, their headstones left behind, with haphazard records kept of where the corpses were relocated. It would take a 10 year court case to determine if the dead still had rights. In this book you will learn about the fascinating history of Long Beachs unique cemeteries, the stories of those said to be buried in them, and whether Long Beachs cities of the dead may be haunted by angry souls whose final abode did not allow them to rest in peace.

Book excerpt: Sometimes the price of justice is a good man’s soul. The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Natchez Burning trilogy returns with an electrifying tale of friendship, betrayal, and shattering secrets that threaten to destroy a small Mississippi town. “An ambitious stand-alone thriller that is both an absorbing crime story and an in-depth exploration of grief, betrayal and corruption… Iles’s latest calls to mind the late, great Southern novelist Pat Conroy. Like Conroy, Iles writes with passion, intensity and absolute commitment.” — Washington Post When Marshall McEwan left his Mississippi hometown at eighteen, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington, DC. But as the ascendancy of a chaotic administration lifts him from print fame to television stardom, Marshall discovers that his father is terminally ill, and he must return home to face the unfinished business of his past. On arrival, he finds Bienville, Mississippi very much changed. His family’s 150-year-old newspaper is failing; and Jet Talal, the love of his youth, has married into the family of Max Matheson, one of a dozen powerful patriarchs who rule the town through the exclusive Bienville Poker Club. To Marshall’s surprise, the Poker Club has taken a town on the brink of extinction and offered it salvation, in the form of a billion-dollar Chinese paper mill. But on the verge of the deal being consummated, two murders rock Bienville to its core, threatening far more than the city’s economic future. An experienced journalist, Marshall has seen firsthand how the corrosive power of money and politics can sabotage investigations. Joining forces with his former lover—who through her husband has access to the secrets of the Poker Club—Marshall begins digging for the truth behind those murders. But he and Jet soon discover that the soil of Mississippi is a minefield where explosive secrets can destroy far more than injustice. The South is a land where everyone hides truths: of blood and children, of love and shame, of hate and murder—of damnation and redemption. The Poker Club’s secret reaches all the way to Washington, D.C., and could shake the foundations of the U.S. Senate. But by the time Marshall grasps the long-buried truth about his own history, he would give almost anything not to have to face it.

Book excerpt: Who takes their kids on a honeymoon? All of them . . . a nine-year-old, a newborn baby, and eight cemetery ghost kids. When the honeymoon is to Disney World, it makes sense to take the whole family. So Piper and Drew load up a rented motorhome and head south. It's a wild adventure with never a dull moment for the newlyweds. Did I mention that Glory, the ghosts' mother, already their O.C.D. housekeeper, stows away and becomes a chronic shoplifter? Or that Piper's Christmas present from the cemetery kids, a baby Magpie that grows full-sized almost overnight, tags along and has a penchant for stealing shiny things? When Drew takes Piper out for a romantic dinner at an elegant restaurant in Epcot, he is more than just a little embarrassed when he discovers his father's corporate credit card has been compromised. He is livid and determined to get the culprit. What follows is a Disney adventure with more twists and turns than the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train ride. Come along for the fun, come along for the thrill, and come along for the escapades of the cemetery kids as they haunt the Haunted House. Who takes their kids on a honeymoon?
