Book Serials Canada

Download or read book Serials Canada written by Wayne Jones and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serials Canada: Aspects of Serials in Canadian Libraries offers a new perspective on serials from a Canadian viewpoint. It provides a sampling of the variety and a sense of the importance of work--work which is less well-known and less covered than that of the U.S.--which Canadian libraries, scholars, and publishers are doing on serials. It presents valuable information not documented elsewhere, giving new insights and ideas to serials librarians worldwide. Authors in Serials Canada take a variety of approaches--historical and descriptive, argumentative, critical, and bibliographical--to their subject matter. Chapters offer close-up, in-depth snapshots of some important topics in Canadian serials. They cover topics including: electronic serials serials pricing, including new developments in the areas of cancellation, funding, cooperation, access, and electronic initiatives Canadian newspapers the historical development of Canadian ethnic serials publishing the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM) the editing, production, distribution, circulation, and marketing of the scholarly journal The Canadian Historical Review the purpose, focus, objectives, and future directions of the Canadian Serials Industry Systems Advisory Committee (CSISAC) the history, mandate, and organization of the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information's (CISTI) Document Delivery service Some of the peculiarities of the Canadian serials situation are discussed in the various chapters, especially in speculating about the future of librarianship. Serials Canada includes a unique bibliography of works on electronic journals either published in Canada or with some other Canadian connection. It also sheds some light on the evolution of the Canadian Periodicals Price Index study so that librarians will find the Index to be more useful in future years. It emphasizes the common elements and some of the problems inherent in newspaper preservation and management by giving an overview of the Decentralized Plan for Canadian newspapers. The discussion of CISTI assists readers in understanding the various services offered by Document Delivery and discusses how technology has been used to ensure that CISTI's Document Delivery services remain relevant to its clients and cost effective in a competitive environment. The information in Serials Canada is of particular interest to librarians of all levels and library professionals and scholars. It will help the Canadian librarian stay up-to-date with developments at home and help those from other countries gain a more international and comparative perspective.

Book Education and Celtic Myth

Download or read book Education and Celtic Myth written by Pádraic Frehan and published by Brill. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines one aspect of the national self-image of Ireland as it was trans-generationally transmitted in the Irish National School environment through the medium of the Celtic mythology tales. Celtic mythology embodied a unique Irishness without being contentious in the wider social and political spheres and the texts had the capability to impart a national self-image, a character and ideological model for the young generation to follow and exemplify, while concurrently act as a sanctuary in which a unique, neutral, Irish self-past and contemporary self-image could be connected to. From 1922 onwards a state-run National School curriculum was set up to propagate a national ideal through the teaching of the Irish language, Irish history and a rekindled awareness of Ireland’s unique past. The mythology tales were employed to portray this unique past and their inclusion in the textbooks provided a platform for the policies of the inculcation of national pride, self-respect and self-image in the Irish nation, official government and Department policy following the Second National Programme Conference and Report in 1926. The aim of this book is an imagological one focusing on what made these tales ideological. The study incorporates a triangular approach: contextual, intertextual and textual. It is at the point of intersection between 4 specialisms: the historical study of Irish nationalism; the history of culture and education in 20th century Ireland; imagology and corpus linguistics. The conclusions drawn are based upon factual, statistical information garnered from the analyses conducted on the corpus and utilise information that is concrete and not hypothetical. This volume is of interest for all those working in Irish school literature, Irish studies – especially cultural, intellectual and educational history of Ireland, imagology and European studies.

Book Masculinities and Manhood in Contemporary Irish Drama

Download or read book Masculinities and Manhood in Contemporary Irish Drama written by Cormac O'Brien and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the journey, in terms of both stasis and change, that masculinities and manhood have made in Irish drama, and by extension in the broader culture and society, from the 1960s to the present. Examining a diverse corpus of drama and theatre events, both mainstream and on the fringe, this study critically elaborates a seismic shift in Irish masculinities. This book argues, then, that Irish manhood has shifted from embodying and enacting post-colonial concerns of nationalism and national identity, to performing models of masculinity that are driven and moulded by the political and cultural practices of neoliberal capitalism. Masculinities and Manhood in Contemporary Irish Drama charts this shift through chapters on performing masculinity in plays set in both the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, and through several chapters that focus on Women’s and Queer drama. It thus takes its readers on a journey: a journey that begins with an overtly patriarchal, nationalist manhood that often made direct comment on the state of the nation, and ultimately arrives at several arguably regressive forms of globalised masculinity, which are couched in misaligned notions of individualism and free-choice and that frequently perceive themselves as being in crisis.
