Book Introduction to Cell and Tissue Culture

Download or read book Introduction to Cell and Tissue Culture written by Jennie P. Mather and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a pleasure to contribute the foreword to Introduction to Cell and Tissue Culture: The ory and Techniques by Mather and Roberts. Despite the occasional appearance of thought ful works devoted to elementary or advanced cell culture methodology, a place remains for a comprehensive and definitive volume that can be used to advantage by both the novice and the expert in the field. In this book, Mather and Roberts present the relevant method ology within a conceptual framework of cell biology, genetics, nutrition, endocrinology, and physiology that renders technical cell culture information in a comprehensive, logical for mat. This allows topics to be presented with an emphasis on troubleshooting problems from a basis of understanding the underlying theory. The material is presented in a way that is adaptable to student use in formal courses; it also should be functional when used on a daily basis by professional cell culturists in a- demia and industry. The volume includes references to relevant Internet sites and other use ful sources of information. In addition to the fundamentals, attention is also given to mod ern applications and approaches to cell culture derivation, medium formulation, culture scale-up, and biotechnology, presented by scientists who are pioneers in these areas. With this volume, it should be possible to establish and maintain a cell culture laboratory devot ed to any of the many disciplines to which cell culture methodology is applicable.

Download or read book Tissue Culture Technique written by Gladys Cameron and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tissue Culture Technique, Second Edition, provides an introduction to tissue culture techniques. An attempt has been made to reduce all equipment and procedure to their simplest forms without omitting steps necessary to ensure successful cultures. Sufficient detail is given to enable acquisition of the essentials of the techniques and avoidance of the many pitfalls which may be encountered by beginners, and may sometimes beset those more experienced. The first few chapters of this book are devoted to the choice and organization of the laboratory rooms and their equipment, including glassware, instruments, etc. Attention is also given to methods of preparation of supplies for use in the various techniques. The succeeding chapters describe the preparation of the culture media and the tissues, as well as the preparation of the cultures in various ways. Also discussed are the types of cells one may expect to see growing from a given tissue, methods of recording their behavior and measuring their growth, as well as their significance in the interpretation of experimental results. The last chapters treat methods of applying micrurgical, histological, and photomicrographic techniques to tissue cultures. It is hoped that the carefully considered data presented in this book, and the many details which are the result of long experience, may be of real service to the prospective worker.

Book Cell Culture in the Neurosciences

Download or read book Cell Culture in the Neurosciences written by Jane Bottenstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental problem in neuroscience is the elucidation of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the development and function of the nervous system. The complexity of organization, the heteroge neity of cell types and their interactions, and the difficulty of controlling experimental variables in intact organisms make this a formidable task. Because of the ability that it affords to analyze smaller components of the nervous system (even single cells in some cases) and to better control experimental variables, cell culture has become an increasingly valuable tool for neuroscientists. Many aspects of neural development, such as proliferation, differentiation, synaptogenesis, and myelination, occur in culture with time courses remarkably similar to those in vivo. Thus, in vitro methods often provide excellent model systems for investigating neurobiological questions. Ross Harrison described the first culture of neural tissue in 1907 and used morphological methods to analyze the cultures. Since that time the technique has been progressively modified and used to address an ever widening range of developmental questions. In recent years a con vergence of new or improved cell culture, biochemical, electrophysiol ogical, and immunological methods has occurred and been brought to bear on neurobiological questions. This volume is intended not to be comprehensive but rather to highlight some of the latest findings, with a review of previous important work as well, in which combinations of these methods are used.
