Book Celestial Empires Classic Reprint

Download or read book Celestial Empires Classic Reprint written by Enoch Fitch Burr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celestial Empires Not scientific to mm up science and religion in the same book Then God himself is unsci entific, for he has so largely and legibly written himself into that Book of Nature that contains all the sciences that even the heathen are without excuse for not reading his eternal power and god head in the things that are made. Is it scientific to attack religion from the side of science, and unscientific to defend it from the same side? Is it sc1entific to illustrate one science by another, as is daily done without rebuke, and unscientific to illustrate that supreme science which we call relrgron by that other science which we call as tronomy? Is it scientific to notice the gigantic tracks of birds in the rocks of the Connecticut valley, and unscientific to notice in both earthly and heavenly strata the still more gigantic foot prints of the Creator? Was it scientific and in excellent taste for the scholar who in the year I 500 found an aged parchment in the monastery of Corwey, in Westphalia, to cry out so that all Europe heard him, This reads like Tacitus, and unscientific as well as in bad taste for the scholar who finds still more ancient inscriptions. Download or read book Celestial Empire written by Nathaniel Isaacson and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How colonialism profoundly influenced the emergence of Chinese science fiction Challenging assumptions about science fiction's Western origins, Nathaniel Isaacson traces the development of the genre in China, from the late Qing Dynasty through the New Culture Movement. Through careful examination of a wide range of visual and print media—including historical accounts of the institutionalization of science, pictorial representations of technological innovations, and a number of novels and short stories—Isaacson makes a case for understanding Chinese science fiction as a product of colonial modernity. By situating the genre's emergence in the transnational traffic of ideas and material culture engendered by the presence of colonial powers in China's economic and political centers, Celestial Empires explores the relationship between science fiction and Orientalist discourse. In doing so it offers an innovative approach to the study of both vernacular writing in twentieth-century China and science fiction in a global context.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Another China: Notes on the Celestial Empire, as Viewed by a Catholic Bishop China has frequently been described in English by persons representing various interests, and therefore viewing the country through many-coloured glasses. Diplomatists and missionaries have had their word to say, as also traders and tourists, ethnologists, and strategists. Nor has the picture of the Celestials, drawn by these {combined authorities, been a flattering one. Firobably the prevailing impression left on the English mind is that the inhabitants of China are' a Villainous crew, a disgrace to humanity, as well as a menace to civilization, and good for nothing, except to be held up by superior people as an everlasting mockery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daughters of China: Or Sketches of Domestic Life in the Celestial Empire I have great pleasure, on the eve of departure for our adopted country, in introducing the Daughters of China to the Daughters of America; and I am sure that a better acquaintance, such as this little volume cannot fail to secure, will result in great good to multitudes. In China, as in other countries, woman's influence is immense. It is so in the family, and in the state, in morals and in religion. But what God has ordained for the best and noblest of purposes, is in China exercised for evil, because the Father of Lies has here held almost undisputed dominion. From time immemorial the Chinese Empire has been his grand University, where the most captivating forms of idolatry, have been devised and carried into practice.
