Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing work of public history that shows how communities remember their pasts in different ways to fit specific narratives, Race, Place, and Memory charts the ebb and flow of racial violence in Wilmington, North Carolina, from the 1730s to the present day. Margaret Mulrooney argues that white elites have employed public spaces, memorials, and celebrations to maintain the status quo. The port city has long celebrated its white colonial revolutionary origins, memorialized Decoration Day, and hosted Klan parades. Other events, such as the Azalea Festival, have attempted to present a false picture of racial harmony to attract tourists. And yet, the revolutionary acts of Wilmington’s African American citizens—who also demanded freedom, first from slavery and later from Jim Crow discrimination—have gone unrecognized. As a result, beneath the surface of daily life, collective memories of violence and alienation linger among the city’s black population. Mulrooney describes her own experiences as a public historian involved in the centennial commemoration of the so-called Wilmington Race Riot of 1898, which perpetuated racial conflicts in the city throughout the twentieth century. She shows how, despite organizers’ best efforts, a white-authored narrative of the riot’s contested origins remains. Mulrooney makes a case for public history projects that recognize the history-making authority of all community members and prompts us to reconsider the memories we inherit. A volume in the series Cultural Heritage Studies, edited by Paul A. Shackel Publication of the paperback edition made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Book Thomas Vinterberg s Festen The Celebration

Download or read book Thomas Vinterberg s Festen The Celebration written by C. Claire Thomson and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg's searing film Festen (“The Celebration”) was the first film from the Dogme 95 stable. Adhering to Dogme's cinematic purity — no artificial lighting, no superficial action, no credit for the director, and only handheld cameras for equipment — Festen was a commercial and critical success, winning the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1998 and garnering worldwide attention. The film is set at the sixtieth birthday party of Helge, the wealthy patriarch of a large Danish family. The birthday festivities take a turn when Helge’s son Christian raises a toast and denounces Helge for having raped and abused him as a child, along with his twin sister, who recently committed suicide. The film explores the escalating consequences of Christian’s announcement, from the stunned dinner party’s collective denial, to violence, to an unexpected catharsis.

Book Memory and the Impact of Political Transformation in Public Space

Download or read book Memory and the Impact of Political Transformation in Public Space written by Daniel J. Walkowitz and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory and the Impact of Political Transformation in Public Space explores the effects of major upheavals—wars, decolonization, and other social and economic changes—on the ways in which public histories are presented around the world. Examining issues related to public memory in twelve countries, the histories collected here cut across political, cultural, and geographic divisions. At the same time, by revealing recurring themes and concerns, they show how basic issues of history and memory transcend specific sites and moments in time. A number of the essays look at contests over public memory following two major political transformations: the wave of liberation from colonial rule in much of Africa, Asia, and Central and South America during the second half of the twentieth century and the reorganization of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet bloc beginning in the late 1980s. This collection expands the scope of what is considered public history by pointing to silences and absences that are as telling as museums and memorials. Contributors remind us that for every monument that is erected, others—including one celebrating Sri Lanka’s independence and another honoring the Unknown Russian Soldier of World War II—remain on the drawing board. While some sites seem woefully underserved by a lack of public memorials—as do post–Pinochet Chile and post–civil war El Salvador—others run the risk of diluting meaning through overexposure, as may be happening with Israel’s Masada. Essayists examine public history as it is conveyed not only in marble and stone but also through cityscapes and performances such as popular songs and parades. Book Tuesdays with Morrie

Download or read book Tuesdays with Morrie written by Mitch Albom and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-06-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A special 25th anniversary edition of the beloved book that has changed millions of lives with the story of an unforgettable friendship, the timeless wisdom of older generations, and healing lessons on loss and grief—featuring a new afterword by the author “A wonderful book, a story of the heart told by a writer with soul.”—Los Angeles Times “The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.” Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was his college professor Morrie Schwartz. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn’t you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man’s life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final “class”: lessons in how to live. “The truth is, Mitch,” he said, “once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie’s lasting gift with the world.

Book Celebrating Memory and Space

Download or read book Celebrating Memory and Space written by Jeremy Adam Carey and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2007, Oklahoma celebrated its centennial with many different events and functions. To commemorate the anniversary, lawmakers established the Oklahoma Centennial Commission. They set out to find and fund projects throughout the state. The projects created by the commission make use of different forms of memory and space. They contribute to the creation of an Oklahoma identity that celebrates the state's history. This thesis comprises three case studies that examine three different and unique projects created by the Centennial Commission. Each describes the development of the project and then analyzes the historical and spatial themes used. All three studies make use of extensive field observations to interpret these themes. The findings of this work indicate that the Oklahoma Centennial Commission succeeded in helping to create an Oklahoma identity and used many different themes of memory and space to accomplish this."--Abstract.

One by one, they tell stories of the special moments that they shared with Fox. And so, as they share their memories, a tree begins to grow, becoming bigger and stronger with each memory, sheltering and protecting all the animals in the forest, just as Fox did when he was alive. This gentle story about the loss of a loved one is perfect for sharing and will bring comfort to both children and parents.

Book Am I The Memory Poems Of Celebration And Inquiry

Download or read book Am I The Memory Poems Of Celebration And Inquiry written by Na. Kannan and published by Pustaka Digital Media. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These poems were written as part of an inspirational "100 poems in 100 days" prompt in Your Quote platform in India (www.yourquote.in). Though many of these poems were written for that prompt, several of these poems were taken from my old collection that were written in Tamil and translated to suit the occasion. I have tried in many ways to define poetry in this collection. I realized I could not define it except by pointing out to the various possible origins. The origins are often mystical and intriguing. These poems reflect my fascination with it. The philosophy of India has influenced me. Jiddu Krishnamurti’s influence is palpable as well. Cinema has influenced me and so have my vivid dreams. They have opened a gate to a perspective that may be unique. Poetry has a reality of its own. I have tried to take you along on this journey using the tool of language. I hope you enjoy this first collection in English.
