Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lincoln and Grant is an intimate dual-portrait of President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant: their ordinary "Western" backgrounds, their early struggles to succeed, and their history-making relationship during the Civil War. Though generally remembered by history as two very different personalities, the soft-spoken Lincoln and often-crude Grant in fact shared a similar drive and determination, as this in-depth character study illustrates.

Download or read book Lincoln s Proclamation written by Blair and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-07-13 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysts as diverse as Frederick Douglass and historian Richard Hofstadter have ardently criticized Lincoln's ''passive'' attitude toward abolition. These critics frequently point out that the Emancipation Proclamation was, in practical terms, meaningless, since it freed only those slaves in areas under Confederate control and left slaves in the Union border states in bondage. In this fine work of counter revisionism, history professor Guelzo strives to resurrect the traditional image of Lincoln as the Great Emancipator. Despite Lincoln's frequent assertions that the preservation of the Union was his paramount goal, Guelzo insists that Lincoln was committed to abolition once hostilities commenced. His repudiation of efforts by John Fremont to liberate slaves were merely tactical retreats, according to Guelzo, and when he deemed the moment appropriate, Lincoln struck a mortal blow against the institution. Guelzo marshals considerable evidence to support his views, but this is hardly the final word on the subject. Still, his work is a valuable counterweight to those who too easily dismiss the importance of the document and Lincoln's role in eliminating slavery. Jay Freeman.

Download or read book History and Civil War in Rural Missouri written by Patrick Sullivan and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entering a wilderness which had long served as home to native Americans, white settlers pushed into northwest Lincoln County, Missouri, in the early 1800s and began to build permanent homes there. This growing migration forced the native Americans to abandon the area and move west. As immigrants and migrants streamed westward, tiny new villages were formed. Then, the nation fell into a brutal Civil War. In Missouri, this often pitted white neighbor against white neighbor. Locals took sides, took oaths of loyalty or risked losing everything, including their lives. Bushwhackers caused havoc across the countryside. As the war came to a conclusion in 1865, great technological innovation and rapid migration caused Midwestern rural areas to flourish. Railroads expanded, creating economic winners and losers for small towns and their merchants. After the turn of the century, the determinaion to build hard roads along with the invention of the automobile caused commerce to shift to larger population centers. The changes caused the smaller communities to lose most of their commerce and professional services, except those related to agriculture. This book looks at this history through the evolution of rural communities in northwest Lincoln County, Missouri.
