Book CEBAF Celebrates Seven Years of Physics

Download or read book CEBAF Celebrates Seven Years of Physics written by Douglas Higinbotham and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia, recently celebrated the first seven years of physics with the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, CEBAF. The unique design of this electron accelerator allows three experimental halls to be operated simultaneously, with a total beam current of 200 {micro}A and a beam polarization of up to 80%. With this facility, a user community of more than 1000 scientists from 187 institutions in 20 countries has completed 81 nuclear-physics experiments, with substantial data taken on 23 more. From the data obtained in these experiments, more than 250 refereed journal articles have been published and 146 doctoral degrees have been awarded. In the near future more than 60 experiments are planned, and there are currently 128 PhD theses in progress. To celebrate and review these accomplishments, while also looking toward the future, the Jefferson Lab user group board of directors organized a symposium, which was held on 11-13 June and dedicated to the memory of Nathan Isgur, Jefferson Lab's first chief scientist. The meeting was divided into eight physics topics: nucleon form factors, few-body physics, reactions involving nuclei, strangeness production, structure functions, parity violation, deep exclusive reactions and hadron spectroscopy. Each topic was presented by one experimentalist and one theorist.

Book Guesstimation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lawrence Weinstein
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2009-02-09
  • ISBN : 1400824443
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Guesstimation written by Lawrence Weinstein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guesstimation is a book that unlocks the power of approximation--it's popular mathematics rounded to the nearest power of ten! The ability to estimate is an important skill in daily life. More and more leading businesses today use estimation questions in interviews to test applicants' abilities to think on their feet. Guesstimation enables anyone with basic math and science skills to estimate virtually anything--quickly--using plausible assumptions and elementary arithmetic. Lawrence Weinstein and John Adam present an eclectic array of estimation problems that range from devilishly simple to quite sophisticated and from serious real-world concerns to downright silly ones. How long would it take a running faucet to fill the inverted dome of the Capitol? What is the total length of all the pickles consumed in the US in one year? What are the relative merits of internal-combustion and electric cars, of coal and nuclear energy? The problems are marvelously diverse, yet the skills to solve them are the same. The authors show how easy it is to derive useful ballpark estimates by breaking complex problems into simpler, more manageable ones--and how there can be many paths to the right answer. The book is written in a question-and-answer format with lots of hints along the way. It includes a handy appendix summarizing the few formulas and basic science concepts needed, and its small size and French-fold design make it conveniently portable. Illustrated with humorous pen-and-ink sketches, Guesstimation will delight popular-math enthusiasts and is ideal for the classroom.

Book Many Body Structure of Strongly Interacting Systems

Download or read book Many Body Structure of Strongly Interacting Systems written by Hartmuth Arenhövel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully edited proceedings volume provides an extensive review and analysis of the work carried out over the past 20 years at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). This research is centered on the application of Quantum Chromodynamics in the strictly nonperturbative regime at hadronic scales of about 1 fm. The book goes further to offer an outlook on the next wave research, with the forthcoming upgrade of MAMI.

Book Understanding the Universe

Download or read book Understanding the Universe written by Don Lincoln and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the fascinating world of quarks and leptons and the forces that govern their behavior. Told from an experimental physicist's perspective, it forgoes mathematical complexity, using instead particularly accessible figures and apt analogies. In addition to the story of quarks and leptons, which are regarded as well-accepted fact, the author (who is a leading researcher at one of the world's highest energy particle physics laboratories) also discusses mysteries at both the experimental and theoretical frontiers, before tying it all together with the exciting field of cosmology and indeed the birth of the universe itself.

Book Bates 25 Celebrating 25 Years of Beam to Experiment

Download or read book Bates 25 Celebrating 25 Years of Beam to Experiment written by T.W. Donnelly and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2000-06-23 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium celebrated the 25th year of experimental work at the Bates Laboratory using electrons to investigate the properties of nucleons and nuclei. Experimentalists and theorists from other sister laboratories together with local representatives from Bates and MIT spoke both about the past highlights of their field and about the current trends both at Bates and elsewhere. The symposium began with talks on nuclear structure studies with electrons, it went on to discuss the structure of few-body nuclei and the hadronic constituents of those nuclei, and concluded with a review of the status of parity-violating electron scattering with reports on the recently completed measurements at Bates and at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.
