Book excerpt: The Gmelin Formula Index and its First Supplement covered those volumes of the Eighth Edition of the Gmelin Handbook which had been issued up to the end of 1979. The present Second Supplement updates the Index by inclusion of the volumes which appeared up to the end of 1987. With this Second Supplement all compounds described in the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry in the period between 1924 and 1987 can be located. The basic structure of the Formula Index remains the same as in the previous editions. Computer techniques were employed in the preparation and print of the Second Supple ment. The data acquisition, sorting, and further data handling were performed with the aid of a series of computer programs developed by staff members of the former" Online Group" of the Gmelin Institute, now at Chemplex GmbH, and by the printer" UniversiUits druckerei H. StOrtz AG, WGrzburg". Whereas the Handbook itself will continue to appear in printed form, the present Second Supplement of the Index is intended to be the last one issued in print. The cumulated contents of the Index and its Supplements are contained in the Gmelin Formula Index (GFI) database which is available to the scientific community via STN. This database will be updated annually to include the published Handbook volumes.

The central theme of the workshop was rules in database systems, and the papers presented covered a range of different aspects of database rule systems. These aspects are reflected in the sessions of the workshop, which are the same as the sections in this proceedings: Active Databases Architectures Incorporating Temporal Rules Rules and Transactions Analysis and Debugging of Active Rules Integrating Graphs/Objects with Deduction Integrating Deductive and Active Rules Integrity Constraints Deductive Databases The incorporation of rules into database systems is an important area of research, as it is a major component in the integration of behavioural information with the structural data with which commercial databases have traditionally been associated. This integration of the behavioural aspects of an application with the data to which it applies in database systems leads to more straightforward application development and more efficient processing of data. Many novel applications seem to need database systems in which structural and behavioural information are fully integrated. Rules are only one means of expressing behavioural information, but it is clear that different types of rule can be used to capture directly different properties of an application which are cumbersome to support using conventional database architectures. In recent years there has been a surge of research activity focusing upon active database systems, and this volume opens with a collection of papers devoted specifically to this topic.

Concluding the volume, M. Komiyama argues that future biotechnology may well rely on the use of rare-earth ions as unique catalysts that can slice DNA and RNA in order to allow their reprogramming, and thus lead to more effective bioengineered processes.

Book excerpt: This book investigates, through the problem of the earth's shape, part of the development of post-Newtonian mechanics by the Parisian scientific community during the first half of the eighteenth century. In the Principia Newton first raised the question of the earth's shape. John Greenberg shows how continental scholars outside France influenced efforts in Paris to solve the problem, and he also demonstrates that Parisian scholars, including Bouguer and Fontaine, did work that Alexis-Claude Clairaut used in developing his mature theory of the earth's shape. The evolution of Parisian mechanics proved not to be the replacement of a Cartesian paradigm by a Newtonian one, a replacement that might be expected from Thomas Kuhn's formulations about scientific revolutions, but a complex process instead involving many areas of research and contributions of different kinds from the entire scientific world. Greenberg both explores the myriad of technical problems that underlie the historical development of part of post-Newtonian mechanics, which have only been rarely analyzed by Western scholars, and embeds his technical discussion in a framework that involves social and institutional history politics, and biography. Instead of focusing exclusively on the historiographical problem, Greenberg shows as well that international scientific communication was as much a vital part of the scientific progress of individual nations during the first half of the eighteenth century as it is today.
