Book The Control Data Corporation s Supercomputer Systems

Download or read book The Control Data Corporation s Supercomputer Systems written by Stephen H. Kaisler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-09 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the ninth volume in the Historical Computing Machines series, which aims to document the history of computing machines from the late 1930s up to about 1995. It is the second volume on Control Data computers. It is focused on the Control Data Corporation’s supercomputer systems which brought to maturity the design principles espoused by Seymour Cray. Later systems, after Cray left CDC, continued the development of families of supercomputers through the mid-1990s. CDC developed and sold supercomputers – some of the fastest machines for over 25 years – for scientific and engineering organizations. CDC’s supercomputer systems continued to be minimalist in their instruction sets, almost RISC-like in some senses. This volume covers CDC supercomputer systems through the demise of CDC as the Cold War ended, describes their system software, their effect on programming language designs, and key applications. As such, this volume strives to bring together a comprehensive, but not exhaustive, view of the capabilities of CDC supercomputer systems.

Book Management of the Effects of Coastal Storms

Download or read book Management of the Effects of Coastal Storms written by Philippe Quevauviller and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large part of the world’s coastlines consists of sandy beaches and dunes that may undergo dramatic changes during storms. Extreme storm events in some cases dominate the erosion history of the coastline and may have dramatic impacts on densely populated coastal areas. Policy, research and historical background are essential elements that need to be interconnected for effective coastal planning and management. This book discusses this framework, with Chapter 1 providing an insight into policy settings and science-policy interactions in the area of coastal risks related to storms and flooding, and integrated coastal zone management. This is followed by a review of the current understanding of the processes generating extreme coastal events, the morphological evolution of coastlines during and after the events, and the methods for monitoring the process as it occurs or for post-event appraisal. The final chapter discusses the importance of historical approaches regarding coastal threats, taking the Xynthia storm as an example.

Book Modeling Marine Systems

Download or read book Modeling Marine Systems written by A. M. Davies and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume reference presents a series of review and research articles on advances in computing, marine physics, and remote sensing and addresses their importance to shallow sea modeling. Intended as a tribute to Dr. Norman Heaps, topics in the book reflect the range and diversity of his work, as well as his influence on international marine science. Topics discussed include numerical techniques, flow in homogenous sea regions, stratified flows, lake regimes, validation of numerical models, remote sensing as a method to collect oceanographic data at the sea surface, and bottom boundary modeling. Marine scientists actively involved in mathematical modeling and scientists who are interested in using models as tools to gain more insight and understanding of the processes they are observing will find this text useful.

Book Algorithms and Applications on Vector and Parallel Computers

Download or read book Algorithms and Applications on Vector and Parallel Computers written by H. J. J. te Riele and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1987 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The efficient use of supercomputers often requires the design of new numerical algorithms, or the re-design of existing algorithms and data organization, in order to realize the potential of the new architectures. This development, in combination with the installation of two new supercomputers in The Netherlands (a Cray-1 and a CDC Cyber 205) gave the impetus to the editors of this book to start a Colloquium on Numerical Aspects of Vector and Parallel Processors. This successful event attracted participants from science, industry and government, not only from The Netherlands but also from the UK, Belgium, and Germany. Twenty-three of the papers presented at the colloquium appear in this book. In the majority of the papers one of the following vector and/or parallel computers plays a role: CDC Cyber 205, Cray-1, Cray X/MP, VP-200, DPP84.
