Download or read book Marijuana As Medicine written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-12-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people suffer from chronic, debilitating disorders for which no conventional treatment brings relief. Can marijuana ease their symptoms? Would it be breaking the law to turn to marijuana as a medication? There are few sources of objective, scientifically sound advice for people in this situation. Most books about marijuana and medicine attempt to promote the views of advocates or opponents. To fill the gap between these extremes, authors Alison Mack and Janet Joy have extracted critical findings from a recent Institute of Medicine study on this important issue, interpreting them for a general audience. Marijuana As Medicine? provides patientsâ€"as well as the people who care for themâ€"with a foundation for making decisions about their own health care. This empowering volume examines several key points, including: Whether marijuana can relieve a variety of symptoms, including pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and appetite loss. The dangers of smoking marijuana, as well as the effects of its active chemical components on the immune system and on psychological health. The potential use of marijuana-based medications on symptoms of AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and several other specific disorders, in comparison with existing treatments. Marijuana As Medicine? introduces readers to the active compounds in marijuana. These include the principal ingredient in Marinol, a legal medication. The authors also discuss the prospects for developing other drugs derived from marijuana's active ingredients. In addition to providing an up-to-date review of the science behind the medical marijuana debate, Mack and Joy also answer common questions about the legal status of marijuana, explaining the conflict between state and federal law regarding its medical use. Intended primarily as an aid to patients and caregivers, this book objectively presents critical information so that it can be used to make responsible health care decisions. Marijuana As Medicine? will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, health care providers, patient counselors, medical faculty and studentsâ€"in short, anyone who wants to learn more about this important issue.

Download or read book CBD Oil for Cancer written by Daniel Ross Ph D and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the cancer patient, cannabis has a number of potential benefits, especially in the management of symptoms. Cannabis is useful in combatting anorexia, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, pain, insomnia, and depression. Cannabis might be less potent than other available antiemetics, but for some patients, it is the only agent that works, and it is the only antiemetic that also increases appetite. Inhaled cannabis is more effective than placebo in ameliorating peripheral neuropathy in a number of conditions, and it could prove useful in chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. A pharmacokinetic interaction study of vaporized cannabis in patients with chronic pain on stable doses of sustained-release opioids demonstrated no clinically significant change in plasma opiates, while suggesting the possibility of synergistic analgesia. Aside from symptom management, an increasing body of in vitro and animal-model studies supports a possible direct anticancer effect of cannabinoids by way of a number of different mechanisms involving apoptosis, angiogenesis, and inhibition of metastasis. Despite an absence adequate clinical trials, abundant anecdotal reports that describe patients having remarkable responses to cannabis as an anticancer agent, especially when taken as a high-potency orally ingested concentrate, are circulating. Human studies should be conducted to address critical questions related to the foregoing effects. Furthermore, CBD is known for mitigating chemotherapy side effects, such as nausea, vomiting etc. Therefore, this palliative treatment could improve the overall quality of life for pancreatic cancer patients. In order to understand the benefits of CBD for cancer, we must first clarify what cancer is and how it occurs. Cancer starts when the body's cells begin uncontrollably dividing. This leads to tumors, which can cause an array of complications. The symptoms and prognosis depend on the cancer in question. It is also possible for some cancers to spread to other tissues. Clinically, I have observed that many cancer patients benefit from adding cannabis to their pain regimen. Although the effect on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy has not been glaringly obvious, other sorts of cancer-related pain appear to respond. Patients who have been put on high doses of opiates at the end of life by their well-meaning oncologist or palliative care team frequently feel totally unable to communicate with their loved ones in their precious remaining time because of altered cognition. Many have successfully weaned themselves down or off their opiate dose by adding cannabis to their regimen. Although it would seem that thc-dominant strains of cannabis would be most likely to have analgesic effects, patients often report significant pain reduction from strains that are predominantly cbd-rich. Although cbd does not actually bind to the cb1 receptor, it does block the fatty-acid binding protein that transports the endocannabinoid intracellularly to be hydrolyzed by the fatty-acid amide hydrolase, hence allowing the endogenous cannabinoid complexed with the receptors to persist The CBD (Cannabidiol) effect rather amplifies the working of cannabinoid receptors, consequently improving the effectiveness of THC and other cannabinoids. Therefore, patients should use a combined treatment of THC and CBD for best results. This book gives an account of everything you need to know about cancer, cbd oil, CBD oil dosage for cancer treatment, success stories of people that used cbd oil for treating their cancer and how CBD Oil can be used to treat cancer, how you can get cbd oil online and at retail shops and lots of interesting and informative topics and sub-topics. Book excerpt: Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many cannabinoids that can be found in hemp and marijuana, two types of cannabis plants.CBD may help people with cancer manage some symptoms of the disease as well as side effects of treatment. Scientists are also looking into how CBD could aid cancer treatment, but more research is needed before any conclusions can be made.Marijuana has enough tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to get you high, but hemp does not. CBD itself has no psychoactive compounds. However, CBD products may have trace amounts of THC.There's solid evidence supporting the idea that cannabinoids can reduce tumor growth in animal models of cancer. CBD may also enhance uptake or increase potencyTrusted Source of certain drugs used to treat cancer. Here are some promising studies: A 2019 review Trusted Source of in vitro and in vivo studies focusing on pancreatic cancer found that cannabinoids can help slow tumor growth, reduce tumor invasion, and induce tumor cell death. The study authors wrote that research into the effectiveness of different formulations, dosing, and precise mode of action are lacking and urgently needed.A 2019 studyTrusted Source indicated that CBD could provoke cell death and make glioblastoma cells more sensitive to radiation, but with no effect on healthy cells.A large, long-term studyTrusted Source of men within the California Men's Health Study cohort found that using cannabis may be inversely associated with bladder cancer risk. However, a cause and effect relationship hasn't been established.A 2014 study in experimental models of colon cancer in vivo suggests that CBD may inhibit the spread of colorectal cancer cells.A reviewTrusted Source of 35 in vitro and in vivo studies found that cannabinoids are promising compounds in the treatment of gliomas.Other research demonstrated the efficacy of CBD in pre-clinical models of metastatic breast cancer. The study found that CBD significantly reduced breast cancer cell proliferation and invasion. These are just a few studies addressing the potential of cannabinoids to help treat cancer. Still, it's far too soon to say that CBD is a safe and effective treatment for cancer in humans. CBD shouldn't be considered a substitute for other cancer treatment. Some areas for future research include: the effects of CBD with and without other cannabinoids like THCsafe and effective dosingthe effects of different administration techniqueshow CBD works on specific types of cancerhow CBD interacts with chemotherapy drugs and other cancer treatmen

Book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids

Download or read book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant changes have taken place in the policy landscape surrounding cannabis legalization, production, and use. During the past 20 years, 25 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis and/or cannabidiol (a component of cannabis) for medical conditions or retail sales at the state level and 4 states have legalized both the medical and recreational use of cannabis. These landmark changes in policy have impacted cannabis use patterns and perceived levels of risk. However, despite this changing landscape, evidence regarding the short- and long-term health effects of cannabis use remains elusive. While a myriad of studies have examined cannabis use in all its various forms, often these research conclusions are not appropriately synthesized, translated for, or communicated to policy makers, health care providers, state health officials, or other stakeholders who have been charged with influencing and enacting policies, procedures, and laws related to cannabis use. Unlike other controlled substances such as alcohol or tobacco, no accepted standards for safe use or appropriate dose are available to help guide individuals as they make choices regarding the issues of if, when, where, and how to use cannabis safely and, in regard to therapeutic uses, effectively. Shifting public sentiment, conflicting and impeded scientific research, and legislative battles have fueled the debate about what, if any, harms or benefits can be attributed to the use of cannabis or its derivatives, and this lack of aggregated knowledge has broad public health implications. The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids provides a comprehensive review of scientific evidence related to the health effects and potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis. This report provides a research agendaâ€"outlining gaps in current knowledge and opportunities for providing additional insight into these issuesâ€"that summarizes and prioritizes pressing research needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CBD (Cannabidiol) effect amplifies the functions of cannabinoid receptors, improving the effectiveness of THC and other cannabinoids. Consequently, patients should use a combined treatment of THC and CBD for best results. CBD relieves pain, nausea and vomiting a solid reason for people to seek the aid of CBD for cancer. However, CBD also has many other health benefits.Although CBD does not treat cancer, patients use CBD to mitigate pain, nausea, depression and more. However, numerous scientific studies show that its counterpart, THC, does impair cancer growth. As a result, a combination of CBD and THC oil (aka cannabis oil, RSO & weed oil) works as an effective cancer treatment. Conventional drugs, on the other hand, have a poor track record in terms of side effects and overall results.

This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years ago I was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer that was spreading rapidly through my body ( metastasizing). I was told unequivocally by my surgeon that I must have an operation to remove part of my colon or I would surely die. Had I agreed to the operation, I would have had to wear a colostomy bag. I refused. A friend told me about the remarkable healing effects of cannabis oil. Cannabis oil was a new thing to me but rather than have the operation I decided to follow up on my friend's advice. My family doctor who was from Iran did not hesitate to issue a medical cannabis oil license to me. he, too, had heard and seen the miraculous results of cannabis oil treating and curing cancer. I did, however, have a short bout of radiation and chemo, both of which made me very sick, The idea was to reduce the tumor so the operation could commence. It was during this period that I had been made aware of the healing powers of medical cannabis oil. My medical team opposed my every thought as to the use of cannabis oil but my inner voice told me not to heed them. In fact, they laid a good amount of pressure on me to adhere to their wishes but I refused to comply. Within two months my cancer had vanished. That was going on four years ago. I live a normal life without having to use a colostomy bag and attend endless check-ups. In fact, I hope never to have to visit a hospital again. It was all very bad and very, very sad. My book, Cannabis Oil Cured My Cancer is my story, a story of helplessness, despondency, grief, sadness, of a life, turned upside down; one that could not escape finality: cemeteries, funeral homes, hospitals--death. it was all very grave, indeed. Eventually, at the hospital, when they told me that my cancer was no more, I walked on cloud seven for weeks. How wonderful it was to be free and healthy once again. In my book, there are links to youtube addresses that will be of great benefit to the sufferer. Also, there is information about a variety of treatments and cures for cancer and other diseases. Here is a list of ailments and diseases that cannabis oil treats and cures: Cancer, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Alcohol addiction, Aids, ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), Alzheimer's, Anorexia, Antibiotic Resistance, Anxiety, Atherosclerosis, Arthritis, Asthma, Autism, Bipolar, Cancer, Chron's Disease, Digestive Issues, Depression. This textbook aims to address the multiple challenges facing healthcare providers regarding the use of CBM in this vulnerable patient population. It provides insight into the latest preclinical and clinical data and offers a practical approach on the use of CBM in a rapidly evolving landscape. It answers questions regarding the prescribing process and elucidates controversies regarding cannabis’ disease-modifying effects. The first chapters will review basic concepts of the endocannabinoid system and pharmacology of CBM, while focusing more specifically on the unique characteristics of two main cannabinoids: THC and CBD. Indicating which benefits can be expected from using either or both of these compounds, the book then addresses issues of drug-drug interactions and other challenges involved in prescribing CBM to frail patients with polypharmacy and multiple comorbidities. Comparing available products, both approved and non-approved by the FDA, the book discusses regional challenges for accessing reliably tested and labelled products in the context of standardization efforts. After carefully determining objectives and addressing patient expectations, further chapters will examine the different clinical settings in which CBM may be useful in cancer care and explore symptom management, including cancer pain, anxiety, nausea, and insomnia among others. The possible benefits of cannabis psychoactivity will also be discussed, including harm reduction strategies for patients who wish to explore these effects. Cannabis and Cannabinoid-Based Medicines in Cancer Care: A Comprehensive Guide to Medical Management serves as a comprehensive text for oncologists, palliative care specialists, general practitioners, and nurse practitioners working with cancer patients or in palliative care settings.
